The Pelicans entered the season without championship expectations as the team embraces year one of the post-Anthony Davis era. However, not many expected the team to have a record of 6-21, and some of the blame for that poor performance falls on Alvin Gentry. Still, the head coach is confident that he can turn things around and isn’t worried about the possibility of being let go before he’s given the chance to do so.
“I’ve been in the league 31 years, I don’t ever worry about anything that I don’t have any control over,” Gentry said (via William Guillory of The Athletic). “I don’t have any control over that. You would have to ask that question to the people that have control. I just know I’m going to come in to work every day and do everything I can to get this turned around.”
Here’s more from the Southwest Division:
- Ian Begley of SNY.tv writes that it’s “highly unlikely” R.C. Buford would leave the Spurs to take a potential top role with the Knicks. Buford is under contract for multiple seasons after the 2019/20 campaign, per Begley.
- In the same piece, Begley names Mavericks GM/president Donnie Nelson as a candidate for the Knicks‘ potential top executive role. The scribe hears that Nelson is an at-will employee, so New York wouldn’t have to offer Dallas any compensation to hire him as the team would with Masai Ujiri or other executives under contract.
- The Rockets should do whatever it takes to land Robert Covington in a trade, Kelly Iko of The Athletic contends. Iko believes RoCo would mesh well with James Harden and Russell Westbrook.
Pancakes ?
Knicks are not a destination for top talent no matter how many lazy sportswriters continue to lazily connect them to every top executive/coach/player. Who have they attracted since Melo?
Houston has nothing of significant value to offer the Wolves.
Donnie Nelson would drink himself to death if he had to go work with Dolan. Not to mention Nelson has a pretty sweet gig ahead of him for the next several years. Who would give up being the GM of Luka to going to the worst run team in the NBA.
Would be funny to see Dolan try to hire him though. Essentially admitting that Nelson kicked the Knicks tail in the KP trade.
Could actually see that (Nelson to Knicks) happen. Word is, it’s happened more than once (or twice) that Luka had cursed Carlisle out in front if everyone and Carlisle would not be adverse to moving on from him. Both of their knowledge and experience with Cuban would be great for the NYK organization. Nelson (and Carlisle) to NY not really far fetched.
Fake news. Knick fans just trying to rebound
Here’s a suggestion, maybe Dolan can hire Allan Houston as the GM and Charles Oakley to coach
Given that Toronto could exact a heavy price for Ujiri, a “free” (at-will) Nelson looks more likely. The Knicks cannot offer two or more r1s in the slot they will be at! Dolan liked Ujiri in the first place from negotiating a player trade with him. And Dolan is what he is. Maybe Mills doesn’t even do trades. Cue soap opera music.

Covington would be a great fit for Houston, since he doesn’t try to be the chief, but there are so many wings with a high 3pt%. Houston will have to settle but they already have House.
