Following their failure to land a star on the free agent market last summer, the Knicks are in the midst of another long rebuild, Steve Popper of Newsday writes. Their young players have not shown signs of future stardom and the seven veteran free agents signed over the summer have failed to lift the franchise from the bottom of the standings, Popper continues. Most of the young players, as well as the veterans, are on the trading block. That includes Julius Randle, the only free agent who received a full guarantee on the second year of his contract.
We have more on the Knicks:
- The club is struggling with the dilemma of improving its chances of winning by playing veterans and devoting more time to toward developing young players, as Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic details. The Knicks have doled approximately 40% of their minutes to players 22 years old or younger, second in the NBA behind only the Hawks, but have relied on their veterans in recent games.
- The home game against the Lakers on Wednesday provided the only opportunity this season for fans to show some love for potential free agent Anthony Davis, Marc Berman of the New York Post notes. Signing with the woeful Knicks doesn’t appear to be on Davis’ radar but the Knicks will have plenty of cap room and Berman, citing sources, claims Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, would one day like to bring his superstar client to New York.
- Guard Dennis Smith Jr. was available to play on Wednesday, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News tweets. Smith missed the last 13 games due to an oblique strain.
Dennis smith jr is available? who really cares but interesting enough they may have to play him to get any interest from other teams to want to trade for him…
The Knicks are simply hilarious.
Pistons: Randle, Portis, DSJ
Knicks: Griffin, Thomas and a first rounder
Pistons get rid of BG and that huge contract for the cost of a young player and a first buy I return get back some decent pieces.
Knicks get a star player which might help them in FA but have to take that huge ugly contract. They also get a first round pick which is nice.
Pistons can then resign Drummond 26 and pair him with Randle 25, Kennard 23, Doumbouya 19, Brown 22, Portis 24 and DSJ 22 as the rebuilding pistons.
They can also trade DRose for another young piece and with Reggie Jackson’s and Langston Galloways deals going to expire they might have a little bit of money to spend also.
With the Knicks, getting Griffin takes some pressure of Rj Barrett which is good. Between Barrett Morris Griffin and Robinson they have a decent team in the east. They also have role players like Gibson, Ellington, Bullock, Payton, Knox, Ntilikina and Trier.
Maybe they also consider moving some of these guys for an upgrade at point.
Something like Ellington and Ntilikina for Brandon Knight. Atleast then you have two options at point with Payton and Knight, plus it gives you a nice expiring deal.
No way the Knicks should trade for Griffin. If theyre willing to take on a superman deal like that send Griffin to OKC and Paul to NY.
Wouldn’t mind that 3 team trade either.
OKC would be happy because SGA could take over full time at Point Guard and run the team. Plus Blake Griffin is from OKC so bringing him home would be a feel good story.
Knicks getting CP3 would make more sense. He could run the point there which makes RJ’s job much easier and at PF you can spread more minutes between Morris Knox Gibson and those guys.
Tazza : No
Don’t understand the “young players haven’t shown signs of future stardom” comment, because Barrett looked legit earlier in the season.
Rookies always tend to drop off the second half, and the Knicks are awful to play for, but still: Barrett is a good young player. That’s something.
The idea that the last rebuild somehow ended over the off season and a new one was started this year because they didn’t sign an injured Durant was funny too.
Sorry, no a Knicks’ fan, but what is really going on over there? Is it management? And if it is, why they don’t sell the team? Bringing one super star does not seem to to be the solution…
