While Andrew Wiggins‘ contract, which has over $94MM left on it after this season, may seem like it is a negative mark on his trade value, that perception is no longer the reality around the league.
The Timberwolves knew they likely had to move Wiggins (for salary-matching purposes) and reached out to other teams about taking on the 24-year-old prior to agreeing to terms with the Warriors.
The former No. 1 pick has improved his value considerably since last season — part of that is him buying into the plan set forth by Minnesota’s player development staff. Wiggins is finding better looks and taking a more cerebral approach to the game this year after putting in substantial work during the offseason.
Here’s more from the Western Conference:
- The Timberwolves had spoken to the Mavericks about a Wiggins deal prior to trading him to the Warriors, per a source. It’s unclear how far those talks went.
- Former NBA wing Matt Barnes remains close with Darren Collison and says the point guard is “50/50” on returning to the league, as ESPN’s Rachel Nichols tweets. It was previously reported that if Collison returns, he’d prefer to go to the Lakers or Clippers.
- The Warriors trading Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III caught the locker room by surprise. “So this was a blindside,” one member of the team told Anthony Slater of The Athletic. Prior to the team’s matchup on Wednesday night, the front office pulled Burks and Robinson from pre-game shootaround, signaling that the duo was going to be traded.
As much as I love DLo the only role he had on a championship dubs team is a 6th man role like Lou Will and even so he still seemed like a Monta Ellis type that had to be moved to let the Splash Bros backcourt flourish. Now not only are we below the tax so can get back to spending big but are on our way to a Curry/Klay/Wiggins/Dray/Wiseman staring lineup with a new and improved bench and a valuable lottery pick from minny coming in 2021-22. LEHGOOO WE BACK
Get back to spending big??…you haven’t seen the cap situation…
They got out of the tax this year, so that means they are free from the repeater tax which was like 50 mil or something crazy. So yeah, if they are willing to go into the tax again and spend, they won’t have to worry about the repeater tax right away.
They have $130M sunk into their starting four so the only way the Warriors are spending big this summer is with the $17M trade exception they got for Iggy. But those 4 players already put them just $9M below the luxury tax for next year so they will be paying millions in taxes unless they shed some of their enormous payroll for next season.
Team is still a** both curry and klay are coming of bad injuries….wiggins is as bad defensively as dlo was so…..still not better than lakers or Clippers or houston or even nuggets with roster you just mentioned. If they had kd thats a different story.
Idk man, I don’t even like the warriors. But neither of those guys rely on athleticism. I think they come back strong and the warriors reclaim their place at the top. Especially now that they have high draft picks to carry them into the future. This team was built right.
sure dude, this is the last chance for LBJ to win a chip because Curry and Klay are injured. HA!
How many count on Wiseman. Nobody mentions Ball, Edwards, etc.
Because like Russell, they don’t fit with the current core. I think GS wants to go for it again with those 3 and then whatever young players they get fill in the gaps until they are gone.
Yea.. they need a Center.
Curry is overrated
Meh
Yes, Wiggins has been better this season and is no longer the absolute albatross he was in the past.
That being said, a team with Towns, Wiggins and Covington has been terrible this season, even if games Towns didn’t miss with injury.
And while I realize the rest of the team is very meh, to be as bad as they’ve been has to be concerning to executives around the league. I know it would be for me.
I thought this would be the trade at the beginning of the season. It made the most sense. Wiggins plays the 3. DLo is a 1 or 2. Klay would be wasted coming back from injury and guarding every 3 if they went small ball all the time. Now they can have a balanced lineup, they draft Wiseman or trade for a Big. They’ll probably get someone off the street.
Wiggins is a rescue. He’ll put up good numbers in Golden State, which will raise his trade value, which will make him a good asset to flip for more rotation players
Wiggins can score, and with Steph feeding him he might average 30. A lot of teams will give up good players for 30 points a game.
He’ll be Melo, basically. Just need Dolan to make the trade himself.
