Newly-acquired Warriors swingman Andrew Wiggins will see his first on-court action tonight for his new squad, in an ABC home tilt against the West-leading Lakers, a source tells the Athletic’s Anthony Slater (Twitter link).
After being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick out of Kansas by the Cavaliers in 2014, Wiggins was traded to the Timberwolves in exchange for All-Star Kevin Love. Love joined fellow All-Stars LeBron James and Kyrie Irving for an Eastern Conference juggernaut that made four straight NBA Finals, winning one title in 2016.
Wiggins, meanwhile, had an up-and-down career in Minnesota. Touted as having the tools to be a high-level two-way wing, Wiggins instead was an inefficient scorer who never became the defensive wiz he was supposed to be. With a healthy Warriors squad next season, Wiggins will no longer need to be a prime offensive fulcrum.
Still just 24, Wiggins put up respectable numbers for a dismal 15-34 Timberwolves team: he boasts a slash line of 22.4 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and 3.7 APG. The Warriors are no doubt hopeful that being moved to a stabler organization will help turn Wiggins into a reliable, Harrison Barnes-esque cog on what should be a loaded Golden State team in 2020/21, after All-Stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson return to action.
Warriors also sporting an almost-full bench for the first time in many months lol
bench? The entire starting lineup of the G team is the bench. lakers must be loving this match if they don’t win by at least 30 points its a failure for them. let’s face it Meyer is making sure the team tanks to get a top 3 draft pick. Not that he shouldn’t be but that is reality. I just hope Meyer gets a center out of the draft or its another failure.
Wiggins, Warriors 2020 pick, Timberwolves 2021 pick, 2nd round picks for Giannis if he demands a trade?
@king beas
They could move Draymond to a 3rd team in a potential Giannis deal.
They also could get Ben Simmons, who is probably the best possible guy to pair with the brothers splash.
Giannis is not going any where. bucks have a very good team. He is not leaving the Bucks.
Ok chill, I meant they have been playing with literally less than 10 players every night this season. Jeez.
There are plenty of takes by prominent writers who are saying things like “the Warriors just reloaded 5 more finals with these deadline moves”. Wiggins is a 3, GSW had no one there, Wiggins is much better than “no one”.
They also can always resign Burks and GR3, and trade for Iggy using the exemption. Once Splash Bros return, they’re a perennial 60 win team no matter whos around them.
Don’t be surprised if Wiggins goes for 40 and looks like a superstar. He loves to make fans think he’s better then he really is.
D’lo does the same thing. At least with D’lo you have 20 points per game even on a bad night. Towns needs to be ready for the rebounds when D’lo is off.
Wiggins goes for 40, and they still lose by 30.
You comment yet again, and still no one cares.
Didn’t you die in The Dark Knight Rises?
Prove it.
So if Wiggins ends up becoming the superstar he was supposed to be, do you credit the Warriors, credit Wiggins, blame the T-Wolves, or just chalk it up to a bad fit in Minnesota? Or all of the above?
You forgot to blame wiggins for not working the way he should have previously…but I would also give the Warriors credit b/c I think the guys he has around him gives him a shot. I think Draymond and Steph can potentially be good motivators, and the Warriors can maybe help him use his athleticism defensively a little better. He finally seemed like he started caring a bit this offseason/this season, and has improved his playmaking. I think in a structured offense like theirs, they can maybe improve his offensive efficiency…should at least be interesting to watch. I hope it happens b/c as a lot of people here know, nothing bothers me more than seeing a talent like his go to waste due to laziness and complacency
Experience making up for lack of original smarts and effort.
Owner Taylor may have been too satisfied.
The team wasn’t winning, but who or what would they know to blame if they had never been contenders?
Barnes was pretty much #5 on GSW if I recall. I doubt Wiggins becomes great, just someone for the other defense to worry about, but that is fine.
In the game Wiggins looked small! He’s pretty good though and the way GSW players work, can rub off on him, plus there’s also the guys there who won it all. He had a couple good tip-outs. FTs not good.
