Earlier today, we saw NFL legend Tom Brady change teams, opting to take his talents to Tampa Bay (be sure to check out our sister site Pro Football Rumors for the latest during NFL free agency).
The NBA has seen many great star players change teams in recent years. LeBron James did it three times, leaving the Cavaliers for the Heat, the Heat for the Cavs, and then the Cavs for the Lakers.
Some have compared the Brady signing to LeBron’s move, while others have matched it up with Michael Jordan joining the Wizards in the early 2000s. Brady is the greatest QB to play football and many consider Jordan the best to ever play basketball. Yet, the comparison of the two moves doesn’t go much further than that. Jordan came out of retirement to play for Washington while Brady just came off a season where he led his team to a division title and a playoff berth.
That leads us to tonight’s question: Where does Brady moving to Tampa Bay rank in terms of monumental moves among star players and what NBA move would you compare it to? Is it bigger than LeBron going to Miami or – with the 43-year-old quarterback on the last leg of his career – is the signing not as colossal?

uh, wrong site…
Really dude!!??
No comprehensive skills!!??
No, I just don’t dig football
Brady is not the greatest QB ever, he just had the greatest situation ever. He is great without a doubt, but in a neutral situation, I’d take several QBs ahead of him. Peyton, Favre, Marino, and Elway definitely. He would probably be a toss up at #5 with Montana.
I’d take brees over him any day, dont think Favre is in top 5 rodgers if for sure.
Rodgers in the top 5 is an absolute joke
Favre hung around probably too long but at his peak I think he was definitely top 5.
Well I guess we are going to find out (eventually) if he’s that good or BB is a genius…..
I mean, the dude is going to be 43 in a few months. You think the next couple of years will help you figure out whether he was good or not? I don’t know man, I think he might have been better in his prime. You know, 15 years ago.
1. Brady
2. Montana
3. Manning
4. Farve
5. Marino
6. Elway
7. Unitas
8. Rodgers
9. Staubach
10. Brees
That’s a good list, but I’d move Brees quite a bit up the list, probably at #4. His numbers are insane. To put it a little into perspective (bearing in mind that the game has changed a bit):
-He has more than twice the number of completions (6,867) than Montana (3,409)
-Twice as many TDs (547) as Montana (273)
-Nearly twice as many yards (77,416) as Montana (40,551)
I still put Montana ahead of Brees because you can’t argue with the wins and Super Bowls.
But Brees is #1 all time (or will be after this season) in:
-Attempts (8 fewer than Favre currently)
-Completions (has 500 more than the next closest–Brady)
-Yards
-TDs
I can’t see putting anyone other than Brady, Montana, and Manning ahead of Brees.
Super Bowls are one game. Just one game. And QBs get way too much credit for winning them. And way too much flak when they don’t.
And since you seem to be using Super Bowl wins as your primary attribute, where is Terry Bradshaw on your list?
Can kinda say the same thing with Joe Montana with the system
My eyes tell me Elway if all systems were equal but maybe Im just enamored with the fastball too much- Man id hate to be a Wr for him on a cold day
Yeah I was thinking he and Montana were good system QBs. I might put Brady slightly ahead simply because Montana had Rice.
Brady is the best QB ever but it’s not on the same level as Bron.
Brady is 43 well past his best and is now going out of the pats for a couple years to end his career. It’ll be remembered like Jordan going the Wizards but if Brady can win a ring which is very very unlikely then it will be remembered as the biggest move.
Bron left Cleveland just as he entered his prime to join with DWade it was insane, to turn his back on his home team.
Then he moved home back to Cleveland to win them a ring at 29 that was insane also, then he moved to the biggest team in the world in the LA Lakers that’s bigger than anyone ever.
Compares more like Shaq going to the Cavs. Or celtics or…
There is no more loyalty to unloyal owners anymore…..
I don’t think either move means that much when looking at history they both at the end of their careers.
Just looking to collect what’s is definitely gunna be an overpay by Tampa.
Manning, Favre & Marino for sure were better than Brady. Right now I rather myself some Mahomes, the guy is absolutely insane.
Anyway I never was a fan of Brady or the Patriots for that matter. #Seahawks all the way.
Brady will have different types of receivers… They will put pressure on him rather than him on them.
Brady is still good but, such a different situation.
This not good for Julian Edelman, such a fine qb at Kent State. (Interesting situation there but nobody follows MAC teams so never heard.)
Still Brady is more past his prime probably, than Lebron.
Montana was good at KC after supposedly being washed up, and they were already a playoff team when they got him. Well, they weren’t worse. He was 37 with a bad back.
Most top qbs do not switch late, credit to Brady.
There’s no perfect comparison, but I’d still say Jordan playing with the Wizards is the closest one. Maybe Karl Malone with the Lakers.
