The deadline on whether to resume the EuroLeague and EuroCup seasons is the end of May, according to league president Jordi Bertomeu, Emiliano Carchia of Sportando tweets. The final decision will be made during the last two weeks of the month, Carchia adds. If play is resumed, it wouldn’t begin any later than July, Carchia adds in another tweet.
We have more coronavirus-related updates:
- Players in Australia’s NBL have agreed to a tiered system of pay reductions, with players earning $200K or more receiving a 50% pay cut, Olgun Uluc of ESPN Australia reports. The minimum player salary of $60K will remain and those players making $80K or less won’t see a reduction. All players will have an opportunity during the two weeks leading up to free agency to opt out of their current contracts. However, each player’s NBL rights will be retained by their respective club, Uluc adds.
- There’s hope that immediate family members would be able to accompany their NBA-playing relatives to Las Vegas if they NBA opts for “bubble” concept to resume the season, according to David Aldridge of The Athletic. By allowing close family members to join them, the desire to leave the city during the resumption of play would be eliminated, an unnamed player agent told Aldridge.
- Players such as Ben Simmons and Pascal Siakam who signed rookie scale extensions last fall will have their pay reduced based on this season’s salary, not the first year of their extensions, Bobby Marks of ESPN notes. Players agreed to have 25% of their paychecks withheld beginning on May 15. Restricted free agents such as Brandon Ingram will also have their pay reductions come out of just their 2019/20 salary, not future earnings, Marks adds.
regular season is over. The best they could do is have a bracket playoff system with much less game than a regular series. Best of 3 or best of 5 championship.
Without RS there is no PO, you can’t go from zero to playoff, they must play at least 5-6 RS games then the playoffs, there is no hurry, even if they finish in October/November, they can start at the proper time of Christmas & carry on the new schedule from now on!
So now no training camp or preseason and cut out a bunch of games next year? They would just not resume the season if that was the case. There will be big compromises to salvage somewhat of a playoff season.
You could try to read the comment before replying, I explained about the training camp. Also why shorten the season next year? You have some very strange ideas, dude! You start in Christmas day & finish at the middle of August, ready to start again on Christmas day, it really isn’t rocket science, try to follow up!
Why are we even talking about this? People are still dying by the hundreds every day…this is not an essential business, nor is the WWF, no matter what the guv of Florida thinks.
If we take the hit now, next season likely can start on time and be played in full. There are some promising treatments in the pipeline that could be fast-tracked for approval – once there is an effective treatment, resuming normal activities is far less of a risk. But now, especially if friends and family are also going to be in this “bubble” – that is just ludicrously dangerous. People have to get there, is the NBA going to give every family a private jet? Staff has to clean the hotel rooms and serve everyone dinner, are they going to be staying I the “bubble” too? Are all the execs families and the referees families coming as well? Now we definitely have a gathering that is well above ‘safe’ limits. 16 teams players (240) and coaching staff (64-80) + 3 family members (960) each, at least 8 refs + 3 family members each (32), 16 teams’ skeleton exec staff and ownership (160?) + 3 family members (480?) totals over 2000 people, and you probably need a third of that to service them in dining rooms and hotel rooms, so now we’re at 3000 and we haven’t even included the technical staff for broadcasts (assuming media personnel report remotely).
There is absolutely no way you can get that many people together and not have someone bring in the virus, unless they are all quarantined and monitored for 14 days prior to arriving, and tested several times before and during the probably 30-day-long event.
Oh, and tests are still scarce to come by, and medical workers to administer them are all trying to, you know, keep infected people alive.
That overstates the need for ACs and execs, who can communicate with electronics. People can mingle after doing the “Q” as long as all the minglers did it, and, it’s duration can be shortened from two weeks depending on the testing ability.
But some kids may have to be left with relatives.
It’s about the testing, which, should not be so freaking hard I don’t know, who knows. I hear & read no agreement even on the terms used. At this point I don’t trust anyone to say exactly what the test can even test for. For one thing testing for “immunity” and testing for covid19 are completely separate things.
Nobody involved has to be immune if there is a quarantine period first that covers what testing cannot detect.
BTW I doubt a treatment comes soon, with dispersal (if found) probably not before 19/20, 20/21, and 21/22 seasons are gone by. We have to do our thing before treatments, as this current state will drag on. If we just had testing.
However note that HR is featuring a picture of Silver in a terse pose instead of a smiling one, as they did in the recent past.
