Even as the season hangs in limbo, NBA teams continue to prepare for the offseason. The Suns admit that the COVID-19 pandemic has created a “unique” environment for the team to scout talent, as Gina Mizell of The Athletic writes.
The Suns are looking to add play-making, defense, and shooting in the draft. Phoenix has the 10th-worst record in the NBA with 3.0% chance of landing the No. 1 pick.
“We’ll find a player that can fit with this group and embodies what we’re about,” GM James Jones said. “Just having a chance to really dig into it, I’m excited about the draft. I know some people aren’t as high on this draft when it doesn’t have star power or marketing power or sexy names. But I see a lot of good basketball players, and that’s all we’re looking for.”
Jones added that he’s impressed with the current guys on the roster.
“I love our team,” he added. “We can see that we have everything that we need to continue to improve internally.”
Regardless of how the team navigates through the draft and free agency, it’s possible the Devin Booker will get more run at point guard.
“He’s at a point in his career where he’s just making the right plays consistently,” head coach Monty Williams said of Booker. “My thought is, put the ball in his hands about 10-12 minutes — maybe more — per game, and see how that impacts our team.”
I think playing Booker at point is a great idea. It would be like when Harden was running point for the Rockets. Clear size advantage would make up for some of his defensive shortcomings. Smart move.
I agree whole hearted.
I don’t think Booker is a good enough playmaker. He seemed to struggle in the past as a lead guard, and this year he and the suns had a great year with a solid playmaking PG in Rubio next to him.
They would only be playing him there for about 10 minutes a night. Nothing wrong with playing him at pg and possibly adding a better shooter next to him in that rotation
In the last couple drafts they always seem to get SF’s (Josh Jackson, Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson) all with good first round picks in back to back to back drafts.
Johnson is a shooter, Oubre has improved as a shorter, Saric is a shooter, Booker is obviously a shooter, Baynes is a shooter.
I don’t think that’s what they need….
I think they should grab a young PG with a high ceiling (T. Haliburton, K. Hayes, C. Anthony, N. Mannion, R. Hampton) to play behind Rubio off the bench as a sixth man. Eventually have that PG take over as the starting PG and he gets better and develops and learns the playbook and roster.
Booker, Bridges, Johnson, Oubre, Ayton all these guys are young and improving but the one position they don’t have a young player in that’s great is PG, and this draft has loads of good points.
I think you’ve got the chance to get a PG and then develop him and Booker into the next Lillard and McCollum.
Trade Booker to Knicks for Knox,Frank, and some picks
Why would the suns do that. Clearly they can get a better offer then that
No one wants the Knicks trash
Thanks mlbnyyfan for making the rest of us Knicks fans look bad!
