With his retirement right around the corner, Hawks forward Vince Carter hopes to stay connected to the NBA even once he’s no involved in the action on the court, as he told T.I. this week on the rapper’s expediTIously Podcast (video link).
Asked about what’s next for him once he officially hangs up his sneakers, Carter pointed to broadcasting and team ownership as two areas he’s interested in, though he admitted he doesn’t have the kind of net worth to become the majority owner of an NBA franchise like Michael Jordan.
“I want to do some broadcasting. I want to stay around the game,” Carter said, per Paul Kasabian of Bleacher Report. “I want to continue to be a mentor in some capacity. I have aspirations of being a part of an ownership group. I don’t make that kind of money to own a team outright like MJ … but at some point, I want to be a part of an ownership group where I can still be that mentor that (players) need, and I want to be the middle man to bridge the gap for the ownership/executive side.”
Here’s more on the Hawks:
- Second-year Hawks guard Kevin Huerter, who was sidelined for 10 games in the fall with a shoulder injury, tells Chris Kirschner of The Athletic that he played through some “nagging” issues the rest of the year and was proud not to miss any more time. “One thing that bothered me, I would go on Twitter, and you get tagged in every little thing. Everyone’s always like, ‘Kevin is always hurt,'” Huerter said. “From December until when our season stopped, I didn’t miss a single game. I was still getting tagged with always being hurt. I just played 40 or 50 games in a row. What do you mean I’m always hurt? That was a big thing for me. I played through a lot to just be on the court.”
- Huerter, who told Kirschner that he’s “so sick of losing,” believes the Hawks’ young core players complement one another and is excited to see what they’re capable of as they continue to grow and commit to improving on defense. “Trae (Young) is a dynamic scorer,” Huerter said. “I think I’m a facilitator, shot-maker and spacer. Cam (Reddish) can do it all on both ends. De’Andre Hunter is a bigger small forward who can move up position-wise on defense. John (Collins) can shoot and rebound and do everything. I think all of our pieces fit.”
- The Hawks have yet to announce a specific target date for when they’ll attempt to reopen their practice facility, and it won’t happen on Friday. However, GM Travis Schlenk said the club is looking at the possibility of moving forward with reopening as early as next week, as Sarah K. Spencer of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes.
When his playing days are over, VINCE CARTER, reportedly plans on returning to the U S Marines. He can confidently do that since GOMER PYLE is gone….
I actually agree with Huerter on the Hawks outlook. They’ve been a really lousy team for several years now but I do kind of like their young core that they seem to have put together. I think they definitely have potential as a group to mature a bit and even possibly surprise people and be close to/actually at a .500 team next season. Sure they’re still a few pieces away from being a legit playoff threat but they do have a really young and solid core to now build around.
They definitely have guys who need to mature a great deal, not the least of which is Huerter. Granted he is very young but wow does he have a ways to go to becoming a real pro. In an ideal world he would still be toiling away on his game and maturity of his approach before he could say he joined the NBA fraternity. Instead he is spectacularly entitled and sour about how he is not awarded greater respect and rewards by this point in time.
Don’t know what lessons VC gave him or if he was considered a lost cause but that boy needs a lot of tutelage on and off the court about being wiser and more calculated in his approach.
Obviously they have some solid pieces with Trae Young, John Collins, Clint Capela, all those young players and thus years top 5 pick. Which puts them into the position do they continue to slowly get better or do they flip the switch and start competing.
One idea could be trading this years top pick along with a contract to get a more established player. This draft class isn’t exactly a very strong one and outside of the top 2/3. Plus a lot of the other top names are point guards which isn’t a need for Atltanta.
I’m think what about, 2020 Draft pick #5, Dwayne Dedmon, Cam Reddish and a second round pick for sign and trade Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart.
Ingram is a good combination of scoring, playmaking, defending and versatility. He’s would be a perfect fit in Atlanta and with that line up. At SG they could share minutes between Heuter and Hart. Teague, Hart and Hunter off the bench would be a good trio.
The Pelicans I feel would be wise not giving Ingram a max deal which would clog up their books and possibly isn’t going to be a great fit with Zion. Getting in Reddish who played at Duke with Zion would be nice, getting Dwayne Dedmon a rim protecting, floor spacing centre is nice. But getting a top pick in the draft would be the prize. They could potentially grab LaMelo Ball and play him as a PG/SG where he could thrive next to Lonzo or off the bench. He would also be a great fit with Zion. They could trade up to get Anthony Edwards who would be a great fit at SG long term.
Either way they turned Ingrams max deal into three good pieces moving forward and giving themselves more flexibility on the books and in trades.
Hawk need a great defensive sg bcoz young is terrible defender.can deandre hunter play at 2? If he can than adding ingram will be great choice.maybe hawk need to sign kriss dunn for backup player.young, hunter, ingram, collin, capella will be good roasters.
Hinter more a big wing guy. He showed promise once he was moved to the four. Reddish was a better fit with trae once he got rolling.
If hunter cant play at 2 then hawk dont need to trade for ingram.reddish shown a good performance after allstar break.but he need to make a bigger improvement.especially in defense.but i dont think so high on him.if lucky and they get 1st pick, they should draft antonhy edwards.
Reddish was there best wing defender by a longshot. Defense wasnt the worry with him. I think more highly of reddish than the other two.
I know reddish is good defender but he need to be a very great defender bcoz young is one of the worst defender in the league.offensively he can play off ball and take a 3s shot.catch and shot like klay thompson.
They are pretty much all under 22. Reddish had no summer and come to find out had an injury. He struggled but got better as the year went on. I’ll rather let it play out bit it wouldn’t surprise me if he ultimately becomes the better of him, hunter and and huerter.
No thanks even with radishes struggles he is prolly the most promising wing we have not giving him up on a very affordable deal. just sign ingram being that we have cap space.its going to take an overpay but by all accounts the pelicans want him around. Draft a guy that fits with this core preferably a ball handler defender type. Honestly the choices this year in free agency are meh with the exception of ingram and davis hawks would be better served playing it out to next year when someone good could be had for less.
Nah I think you guys are looking at this wrong.
The Hawks are saying they are ready and wanting to start winning now in order to start winning I think they need to move off all the decent young players and get a more established piece. Not play the long term waiting game but play now.
This trade swaps Reddish, Dedmon (cap space) and a top pick for Ingram and Hart.
Ingram gives you an easy 25-5-5 every night while being the teams best wing defender which is what they need. Cam Reddish who could be that might eventually average that in like 5 years or he may never average that. He entered the year poor and ended it promisingly but the hawks are now trying to win and can’t have 2/3 maybe players. Ingram is good for it and the hawks want to be winning, they need players with guaranteed production.
The only issue with the Hawks would be Trae Young needing time improve defensively, but Josh Hart, who is included in the trade is a good addition at SG who can defend well.
Plus the Hawks needing to add some bench pieces.
1. Young. Teague
2. Hart/Hueter
3. Ingram
4. Collins. Hunter
5. Capela
That group as a core is a playoff team in the east but with Reddish instead of Ingram they probably are still a 30/35 win team. This years draft pick 4th/5th isn’t going to be a good contributor. Wiseman Ball Toppin and Edwards will all be off the board leaving a bunch of PGs, Avdija a playmaking 3, without a 3pointer, Okungwu a defensive 4/5, and Issac Okoro a defensive 3/4 with no shot at all.
Again hawks will be fine. The rooks largely weren’t the problem. The problem was the vets namely turner, crabbe, Parker and Len early on. Though in lens defense he got better after a horrid start that essentially got him benched with the hawks. I’d offer Ingram a contract to see if the pelicans match it but otherwise I’m not trading much of anything this year to be essentially an 8 seed if that . This doesn’t scream championship to me. Similar to the Celtics with there young guys I hold until that guy becomes available I don’t think Ingram is it right now.
A decent rooks wont make u be a good team.young, collins, capella is good young players.hunter is their best defender.huerter and reddish are just decent.if hawk draft antonhy edward, then they should trade reddish or huerter.maybe huerter, reddish, and dedmon for ingram.u dont need to keep a decent young players
Your going off reputation. Reddish was asked to guard the players that young couldn’t basically all the scoring threats. Did you even watch the hawks. Hunter guard big wings and four it wasnt even close. That’s partly why reddish stuck in the rotation because he could actually guard guys something the others didnt do or couldnt.
Yes I not saying Reddish is bad but what is a fact is Hawks want to get better and start winning games. If they run it back with Reddish Heuter Hunter plus another you guy as their SG/SF they don’t really improve more than maybe 5 wins.
They don’t want to play the long term wait and see game. They want to win now and they don’t do that with their current group.
Ingram is a nice upgrade that fits the system and would be a solid addition.
Young Ingram Collins and Capela might only make the 8th seed next year but all these guys are young and will continue to improve and continue to get better.
But there’s no point running it back, taking lots of Ls again and a year from now saying on these young guys they will get there, they are improving and be in the same position again.
Or they could target some cheap rotation players and wait till next year when guys that will actually help on the championship aspirations will help.
Your saying eat till next year then when they only improve 5 wins you’ll say wait till next year again and they will improve 5 more wins. Then Trae Reddish Capela Collins Heuter they will all be wanting new deals and good money for what a 35 win team that doesn’t make the playoffs.
You can’t stay young and developing forever. Bite the bullet trade Reddish and the high first for Ingram and make that team competitive and entertaining again.
Then while being competitive and making the playoffs with more like 45 wins the players will still continue to get better and better
I’ll say this the hawks ain’t giving u on a core that poured in 117.9 pts per 100 possessions. Collins won’t miss 25 games due to suspension and they won’t seriously be starting jones so they will win more than five games…. also they add capela to that and will target defense and shooting.
We don’t know where the hawks will land in the lottery right now. I’d rather take Anthony Edwards than trade away reddish, who has a higher ceiling than hunter.
Young 29.5/9/4
Ingram 24/4/6
Collins 21.5/1.5/10
Capela 14/14/1
Hunter 12/2/4.5
Hart 10/1.5/6.5
Hueter 12/4/4
Teague 11/5/2.5
As a core of 8 players plus some vets for the bench. Everyone gives you atleast about 12 points, you have a good young team but you have some leaders and some vets. You have some solid defenders like Capela and Ingram, you have some playmakers like Young Ingram Hueter and Teague all averaging near 5 assists or more.
That’s a group that goes to the playoffs in the east behind the top 5 of Celtics Bucks Raptors 6ers and Heat. You have the Nets Pacers and 1 spot for the hawks over the top of the Magic, wizards, bulls and so on.
