As they prepare for the 2020 NBA draft, the Knicks have “extensively” scouted North Carolina point guard Cole Anthony, a source tells Ian Begley of SNY.tv. Anthony, who currently ranks 11th on ESPN’s big board, could be an option for New York if the team doesn’t move up in the draft lottery. Currently, the Knicks are most likely to land at No. 7 or 8.
Begley cautions that just because the Knicks are doing a ton of homework on Anthony, that doesn’t mean they’ll draft him or even that they’re targeting him. After all, the club is also said to be keeping a close eye on RJ Hampton and is likely monitoring several other lottery prospects too.
Still, the Knicks’ potential interest in Anthony is worth keeping in mind. A report back in February – shortly after the team reached agreed to hire new president of basketball operations Leon Rose – suggested the Knicks intended to target a scoring point guard in the draft. And Anthony, who grew up in New York, has talked about having interest in joining the franchise.
Here’s more on the Knicks:
- In a mailbag for SNY.tv, Ian Begley discusses RJ Barrett‘s future, the Knicks’ draft plans, possible offseason trade targets, and more. Responding to one question about the head coaching situation, Begley says that he knows Tom Thibodeau is a strong candidate and that he expects Mike Miller to get an interview, but he’s not certain yet about any other specific candidates.
- Mike Vorkunov and Danny Leroux of The Athletic explore which players might be good options for the Knicks in free agency and discuss whether pursuing a Chris Paul trade would make sense for the organization. Leroux isn’t in favor of going after Paul, pointing to a few veteran point guards on the free agent market who would come at a more reasonable cost, albeit without CP3’s upside.
- In case you missed it over the weekend, we previewed the Knicks’ salary cap situation for the 2020/21 league year.
Thibodeau shouldn’t coach a rebuilding team. He doesn’t like to play rookies at all and rotations are tiny. Overplays his starting 5. He’d be a much better fit for a team built to win.
How good of an outside shooter is Cole? His father was a good shooter not great. The Knicks need to get lights out shooting to space the floor for RJ and Robinson. Hopefully they keep Trier and Dotson both reliable shooters.
Cole can shoot it from outside but isn’t a specialist. I think the best comparison to a current player would be DAngelo Russell.
He’s good at handling and being creative and smart and is a score first point but can play make a little and is a good shooter
CP3 talk ,,,, I jus don’t get. I mean they can’t be that stupid, dumb. If you get him to mentor. Sign him as assistant coach. What do you need a 35yr old PG. Who makes 42 mill next two yrs. Playing for a rebuilding team. That at best is an 8th seed. Then you have to give up players too. Freaking INSANE. Maybe if they give us a young player and a #1 pick. Salary dump MAYBE. Our money is best spent on FA. Time to get some sanity back in NY. Build the team with youth and draft. Good coaching and mentoring. Stop overpaying guys who you don’t even play. Get a coach so we can all be in on draft. Halliburton is the PH who will change it all for us. Only way you don’t take him is. He is gone. Or we luck out with top pick. Then I take Wiseman. And trade Mitch and whoever. To move up and get Halliburton. This would be best case scenario. I can dream right.
Not sure about Cole. Halliburton is best PG in draft to me. Only one I see maybe taking him is Pistons. If Halliburton is gone I go for Avdija or Okongwu. Avdija being from Israel and a Jew. He will be hard to pass up for Knicks. He has a chance to be solid player. And plays a position of need. NYs big Jewish community. They will never live it down. If they pass on him. And he becomes not just a star. But a solid player. To me he looks like he’ll be better than Knox. So if Halliburton is gone. I’m good with Avdija.
I don’t think there’s a franchise PG in the draft this year. I’d prefer to land a Wiseman if he’s still there or a sharpshooting Bey Could trade down and still get him) and I’d love Tre Jones with the 27th pick. Think he’s gonna be exceptional, better than projected. He’s got 12 points a game, 7 assists a game in him, besides the great D.
I like Cole to Knicks.
He has worked a lot with Chris Brickley who is in NY so if he stays in the city you know he’s going to be working extremely hard on improving.
Cole Anthony if you had to make a NBA player comparison I think is really similar to DAngelo Russell. Both score first pint guards, both have a ton of moves in which to score and can play make a little. They both have some ego and some it factor. Both are decent shooters but prefer to play on ball more. I think he didn’t have the best college year but has heaps of potential and has a ceiling like Kyrie Irving but with that comes a floor of someone like Brandon Knight.
I still like a cp3 trade that has Randle going to OKC and 2 first round picks going to the Knicks with cp3.
The people who are against a cp3 trade because the Knicks are sending assets to OKC are complaining because they don’t understand the price.
Cp3 also keeps the Knicks from drafting anyone but the best player available.
I’d be tempted to keep DSJR, Payton and Frank with cp3 because I think all three would see their trade value spike.
There is no way in hell 2 first round picks go to the Knicks with CP3 in any deal.
The rumour is Randle plus 2 first for CP3 not the other way round.
CP’s trade value actually goes up with time, despite him being short and old, because he’s not declining much and his contract gets shorter.
The Knicks need to stop including any first round picks in any deal for CP3. Now if they can get Lillard, Booker, or Beal for Randle, Knox, Frank or DSJR, and 2 first round picks then do it.
