Teams around the NBA are keeping an eye on the situation in Indiana, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv, who notes that Victor Oladipo will be entering a contract year in 2020/21 if he and the Pacers don’t agree to an extension before then.
ESPN’s Zach Lowe reported in February that the Pacers and Oladipo “very briefly” discussed the possibility of a contract extension prior to the start of the 2019/20 campaign. Sources tell Begley that the idea of a four-year, $80MM extension was brought up during those talks, which didn’t progress much beyond that point.
Technically, since Oladipo had two years left on his current deal prior to this season, an extension couldn’t have exceeded three years, totaling five overall. As such, Begley’s four-year figure may have included the guard’s $21MM salary for 2020/21.
Once the ’20/21 league year begins, Oladipo will once again become extension-eligible and could then tack on up to four new years to his expiring deal. Because the starting salary on a veteran extension is limited to 120% of a player’s previous salary, Oladipo could receive up to $25.2MM in year one, maxing out at about $113MM over four years.

There’s no reason to believe at this point that the Pacers won’t make a strong push to retain Oladipo. It’s worth noting that Indiana has already made long-term commitments of at least $18MM per year to three other players – Malcolm Brogdon, Domantas Sabonis, and Myles Turner – and that the club had a better record without Oladipo this season (32-20) than with him (7-6). But that sample size was small and the two-time All-Star was coming off a major quad injury that has sidelined him for a full year.
Additionally, while the Pacers don’t have a ton of cap flexibility in future years, they hold Oladipo’s Bird rights and – depending on where the cap lands going forward – could likely stay out of the tax while re-signing him, either to an extension or as an unrestricted free agent in 2021.
Still, as Begley writes, if the 2019/20 season can be resumed, teams around the league figure to be monitoring Oladipo and the Pacers to see how his chemistry with Brogdon and the rest of the team develops.
JaKarr Sampson in the background!!!!!
I liked him on the Masked Singer.
I think he definitely resigns, he is a great two way player and is a clutch performer. That injury was a huge injury and he will be a lot better after this virus.
I think if Indy were to open up some cap space by making one of its plays open for a trade it would be Myles Turner. Turner who has been kinda moved to PF since Sabonis has taken off hasn’t really taken off as expected. He did lead the league in blocks last year and is still only 24 so he would have solid value but on this team he is out preformed by Sabonis and at 18mil all he gives you is 12 points and 6.5 rebounds. Since entering the league a few years back he hasn’t really improved, his best season was his second season but that also was because he played the most minutes and took at the most shots that year, production wise per minute it’s all pretty much the same.
Oladipo is a 2 time all star, a former all NBA third team, a former all defensive first team player, former steals leader and former most improved player.
Between Oladipo and Brogdan your going to have a really strong backcourt on both ends of the floor, both a solid defenders, both can play make and both can shoot it. Then you’ve got TJ Warren who does a bit of everything and Sabonis who is a solid big man in today’s game who averages 18.5/12.5/5.
Agree with oladipo.indy must resign him.but i think indy should find the way to keep turner to.turner and sabonis are good duo big.but if indy want to trade him, maybe trade him to bulls for markanen.markanen shown a good performance in his first 2 years.he is good shooter but bad defender.but bulls need to add another player.
lmao the bulls would need to add to it??? we have a miles turner in carter. both of whom are cheaper and have higher ceilings than turner.
If bulls trade lauri for turner, wcj can play at 4.look at wcj game when he played for duke,he was a good shooter, not great.but i belive he can play at 4.im bulls fan.my 1st and 2nd option for bulls center are embiid and gobert.but if bulls cant get them, turner will be a nice choice too.
Yeah agree I think Turner would be a good fit for the Bulls. Him and LaVine would be solid foundations for a team with its young players. Maybe they could make a play for Anthony Davis wanting to move home…
Simmons>russ… man.. dont make me flying so high.i love ad. I really love him if he play for bulls. But i dont want to think about it coz i think ad will stay bcoz he need the ring.
Yeah I think he probably stays in LA cause the market and reputation and things. Would give it like a 90:10 sorta odds.
But if he does look into it, he has said he doesn’t like playing centre and wants to play PF so having Turner there set at C would be a bonus. If he decided to look long term he could see that LaVine and Turner plus some young guys are going to be better than Bron at 38/39 and Kyle Kuzma. Lakers don’t have much to build around AD with and the Bulls do.
Plus in Chicago he would be playing in the eastern conference meaning he could rest during regular season like he did in New Orleans and will make the playoffs every year. He would have some tough match ups like Embiid, Giannas, Tatum, Siakim, KD and Adebyo but aside from them he would also have easy night against the Knicks, Hornets, Wizards, Pistons and so on.
I definitely think it’s an option for him and a good one. If L.A. doesn’t get him some young dudes for after Bron then I would be looking at what’s next..
LaVine…LaMelo Ball (in the draft)…Myles Turner… plus some young dudes and role players that’s a pretty nice group
Would the pacers consider a swap of Brogdan for Julius Randle to get out of Brogdan’s contract? Randle has one year left plus a team option.
Why would IND wanna get rid of Brogdon? They just sign him last summer & he has had an excellent season! It wouldn’t make any sense! Also IND the last thing they need is more bigs, so trading their PG for a PF just would be pointless, right?
