A play-in tournament could result in nine Western Conference teams participating in a 16-team playoff, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post. A 22-team format appears to be the most popular plan for the resumption of play. According to Berman, the six extra teams may compete with the two current No. 8 seeds from each conference in an eight-team, single-elimination tournament. Washington would be the only Eastern Conference team among that group of six extra teams.
We have more COVID-19 related news:
- NBA players received on Monday — the first day of the month — reduced paychecks for the second time since the suspension of play, Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets. NBA players accepted a 25% reduction on their paychecks beginning on May 15. Starting on June 15, the 25% reduction will likely either decrease or increase based on how many regular-season games the league attempts to play, Marks adds.
- Players Association president Chris Paul speaks regularly with Adam Silver, which has built trust between the league’s stars and the commissioner, as Royce Young of ESPN details. Paul has talked more than once a week with Silver during the pandemic, serving as the liaison between the players and the commissioner. “I just look at it as guys are actually concerned and they want to know what’s going on,” Paul said. “They should have a say in their future.”
- Some executives have raised concerns about not allowing all teams to participate in a restart of the season. Get the details here.
How will they decide which Western team would become the East’s 8 seed should that happen? Or is it already a foregone conclusion that they are scrapping conferences altogether? Forget it, I don’t need an answer. This is just stupid.
I think the idea is 8 teams (the two current 8th seeds, the Wizards, Blazers, Pelicans, Kings, Spurs and Suns maybe I don’t know the standings) have a tournament between them for the last 2 playoff spots. Meaning the Grizzlies and Blazers could be the winner and you would have an extra team from the west.
By this idea in assuming they would be playing a 1-16 playoffs with no conferences
How are executives complaining about not having all teams in the season but also complaining about forcing all teams into the season? Just let every team play only if they want to. No need to force anything.
We would all selfishly like to very soon turn on the TV and see the top teams duke it out for the title. But this is adrenalin talking, and as usual, not very rationally. Adrenalin fuels the the good AND the bad… for instance it can fuel police misbehaviors like the one in Minnesota lately with protests following (and random social distancing practiced).
If Silver is worried about the increased odds for disaster with a dozen more travelling parties added, then it’s not as safe a plan as advertised.
The way some players live, home is not much safer than a rules-enforced bubble. But how earnestly enforced?
Players are questionably defended from covid19 regardless. How safe are they at home? Are their kids playing with other kids?
Grizzlies and Magic will need to get rewarded with odd of 6th and 7th picks.
Bring all back. Have double counting, one for playoff and other counting from beggining for a new award (additional lottery pick up or money for a winner).
Sounds like a good idea to me, the top teams like the Lakers and Bucks get to keep their seeding as the best teams and have the easier playoff run. The bottom teams just outside the playoffs get the chance to make the playoffs.
The only small issues would be do the Eastern conference teams want to par take in a 1-16 seeding playoffs and what do the Grizzlies and Magic think of this as they currently hold the 8th seed yet might not make the playoffs…
It needs 9 votes from the East to support 1-16 seed
Let’s do it every year, final 4 are from the west
