As one of the eight teams not invited to Orlando to complete the 2019/20 season, the Knicks are anxious to have some form of offseason activities for their players this summer and/or fall, writes Marc Berman of The New York Post.
With the NBA prioritizing the restart of the season for now, the Knicks are waiting on the league to review a handful of the options on the table for its bottom eight teams. If the league moves forward with a specific plan, it will need to be approved by the NBPA.
According to Berman, the Knicks are hoping to at least get approval to hold a mandatory two-week camp between the October 15 draft and the proposed November 10 start of training camp. That would give the team a head-start on the 2020 preseason after seven-plus months of inaction.
As Berman details, the Knicks are also in favor of the proposed target date of December 1 for opening night of the 2020/21 campaign. There’s an expectation that the players’ union will want to push back that date a little, but New York and the other seven teams whose seasons are over will be eager to get next season started as soon as possible.
Here’s more on the Knicks:
- Within the New York Post article linked above, Berman suggests that John Calipari would challenge Tom Thibodeau‘s frontrunner status if he were to “throw his hat into the ring” for the Knicks’ head coaching job. However, Ian Begley of SNY.tv says interviews are expected to begin this week and notes that Calipari continues to reiterate he has no interest in leaving Kentucky. In other words, it seems pretty safe to cross Calipari off New York’s list of potential candidates.
- The Knicks’ decision-makers were still finishing up their exit interviews with players as of Monday, a source tells Berman (Twitter link). Those conversations took place via video conference calls.
- After some internal back-and-forth last week about the Knicks’ silence following the death of George Floyd, the team put out a statement today saying it stands with “all who act for a positive change.” Team owner James Dolan had initially told MSG employees in a pair of memos that he didn’t believe a public statement was necessary, even as the rest of the NBA’s teams issued statements of their own. ESPN’s Malika Andrews has more details.
Would Brooklyn ( KD and Irving)bring in John Calipari to coach the Nets
Pittino
I actually agree with Dolan and not putting out a statement. It’s pointless. It’s doesn’t do anything. It doesn’t change anything. It’s like people who change their Facebook photo. It’s lazy activism. No cares about FB profile except you and your echo chamber you created in it.
“We stand for all who act for positive change”…..I mean….did you not before? Does that do anything? Nope…but glad he was pressed to make the same statement all the owners basically said.
Everyone’s life matter and half of these ppl didn’t well most of those peeps didn’t know him. And wanna say this n that. Everyone’s life matters not just yall. We all bleeds the same. Might be different color, don’t matter if your blue, red, white, black, asian, mexican, whatever. All and everybodys life’s matter!
Everybody’s life does matter but in fairness the black and brown have not been treated equally hence the black lives matter comes to play.
If you have breast cancer and go to a rally for breast cancer and hold up a sign breast cancer matters, would you see someone hold up another sign stating All Cancers Matter? That’s ludicrous!
my “twin brother”, Billy Donovan
A few month ago, I recommend the Knicks to acquire Sam Presti and Billy Donovan.
Billy Donovan has two NCAA Champs in 2006 and 2007, four straight year in Elite 8 or Final 4 between 2010 and 2014.
Thunder are overachieved this year, but Donovan has no job this offseason.
Get back on your meds
Yep he’s my twin also, weirdo! I didn’t mean to hit like. Lol get off of the hot sauce.
Donovan ???? I’ll keep quite.
Berman has now said. We should trade for CPtooold. Take on 90 mill for two yrs. Just to get mentored. Now Calipari cause what. He Knows Rose and sends players to NBA. Glad Berman is only a writer
Calipari failed miserably with Nets. Since at Kentucky. He has recruited most talent. So of course they go to NBA. Since 2009 he’s won ONE title. Calipari is not cut out for Pro players. Neither is Pitino.
Fizdale was another disaster. This needs to be done right. This is about this talent we have now. Not future spending. Or all you who thought KD n Kyrie was coming. And now you think Giannis is coming depending on coach we have. This young talent and draft has to be developed. They have to do this right. So maybe in yr or two. We can sign a player or trade for one. More talent and assets we have. More opportunities we have. So it’s critical to get this draft right. And develop the young guys. Develop the team. For instance Wood is 24. He is PF worth investing in. I don’t want to overpay. Considering Randle Looks like he’s gone. For me a top 3 pick. Means Wiseman, or Toppin. Or top 6 Okongwu if Halliburton not there. Only three players I take ahead of Halliburton. Wiseman, Edwards. Toppin. Edwards pick we can move, I’m gd with RJ at 2. Knicks are rebuilding. We should only be about future. Developing, building, creating. Our future is not far away. We don’t need anymore set backs. It took a long time to get to this point. Let’s finish this right.
This is minutia but how stupid is it that a “source” does not want his name printed leaking that the Knicks were finishing up their exit interviews with players via video conference calls. Classic Berman.
Still think Knicks best case scenario trade for Beal/Booker move RJ to the 3. Then Draft a PG.
