Alec Burks, who was traded to the Sixers at the trade deadline, could find himself out of the team’s playoff rotation if Brett Brown decides to go with a nine-man rotation, Derek Bodner of The Athletic argues in his latest mailbag. Bodner trusts Glenn Robinson III‘s shot more than Burks’ and cites Robinson’s comfort level playing off the ball as reasons for the choice.
Shake Milton, Josh Richardson, and Tobias Harris would likely start alongside Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. Al Horford and Matisse Thybulle are strong candidates for major minutes and Bodner see Mike Scott getting considerable run, though Brown could mix things up depending on the opponent, with Furkan Korkmaz also an option.
Here’s more from Philadelphia:
- Richardson could wind up being a trade chip if the salary cap decreases and ownership doesn’t want to pay a massive luxury tax bill, Bodner writes in the same piece. The scribe adds that from an on-court standpoint, the 26-year-old shooting guard can be a valuable long-term piece for the franchise.
- The challenges of putting together a playoff rotation this season are different than last year for the Sixers, Rich Hofmann of The Athletic explains. The team had a statically superior starting five last season and just had to configure the bench, which was a tough ask. This season, there’s no clear dominant five. And while there are more options on the bench, Brown won’t be able to make decisions based on a large sample size due to the suspended season.
- Chris Mannix is optimistic about the Sixers’ chances once play resumes, as he writes for Sports Illustrated. With every team out of tune, Mannix believes low-post play could become more important than shooting, and Philadelphia has the most dominant big man in the Eastern Conference.
There are a lot of typos in this post
At this moment, 76ers are the NBA luxury tax leader at 158.2 million in 2020-21 season. (cap hold included).
Is it worth spending big luxury tax for the 6th seed in the east?
Trade Idea
Warriors get Richardson and 76ers 2021 first round pick
76ers get Warriors 11 million TE and 52th pick
Richardson stats
14, 3, 3
3-pt Field Goal 33% for 76ers
I proposed him to shoot 43% for the 3-pointer for Warriors.
Even as a Dubs fan, I doubt Richardson would be a salary dump. If the 2021 pick was going the other direction (lottery protected 21 and 22, else GSW and TOR 2nds in 2022), I’d do that too.
Why would the Sixers give up J Ruch who has a great contract and give up a first for one of the worst second round picks in a weak draft.
They’d basically be giving JRich up for a undrafted rookie. Makes zero sense
No one is going to shoot 43% from 3-point range in Golden State anymore, except maybe for Curry. They’re no longer the dominant team they were during their 2014-2019 dynasty. It will be interesting to see if they can make the playoffs next season.
Joe Mannix likes the Lakers chances.
Edit
76ers led the nba in team salary at $158.2 million for the 2020-21 season (cap hold included).
They have to dump Richardson salary if ownership doesn’t want to pay a massive luxury tax bill and doesn’t want to trade out most of future first round picks.
Philly I recommend trade out Al Horford and a 2020 second round pick for Harrison Barnes.
From this piece you can see Horford isn’t even a starter and the team would prefer to go smaller to add shooting for Simmons. Barnes would be a solid 3 and D SF who can shoot it from outside and defend the wing well. It also saves the Sixers some tax money.
76ers will need a major roster revamp asap. Both Horford and Harris should be on the trade block. Nether really fit with their 2 rock stars. Everyone else is on reasonable contracts.
Player A won’t be in coach B’s rotation because sports writer C thinks player D has a better shot. I don’t think so.
Who’s at 1, What’s at 2, Where’s at 3.
Yepper, funny stuff.
25 million over the luxury tax line would pay 70 million luxury tax
Due to projected 40% revenue loss, it’s possible that 76ers want to cut tax
Street rumors said 76ers were trying to trade For Luke Kennard at the trade deadline,it was rejected
Hartford and 2 future Firsts were rejected
“Philly has the most dominant big in the East” puh-leaze. Shaq didn’t give Embiid his Superman title.
@richt
So wiseass who is more dominant in the East than Embiid as a big, pleas enlighten me?
Not many teams will take Horford. But he is the one who should be moved. Pelicans might want a solid vet for young team. Spice the deal Sixers can get Holiday. This is a much better mix. Holiday, Simmons, Embiid, Harris. I know Knicks would take Tobias. If they want to go full change. Tobias you can probably make a good deal for. Horford is much tougher sell. Have to give up a pick or take back bad contract.
I think the step 1 for 76ers is to dump salary
If I were a owner I am not paying 70 million tax for 6th seed
