The dates of travel to the Disney World campus in Orlando for the NBA restart are out, per Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium (Twitter link). All 22 NBA squads will travel between July 7-9. The NBA season has been paused since Jazz center Rudy Gobert was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 11.
On July 7, the Jazz, Magic, Nets, Nuggets, Suns, and Wizards will arrive at the NBA’s Disney campus. On July 8, the Celtics, Clippers, Grizzlies, Heat, Kings, Mavericks, Pelicans and Thunder will touch down. Finally, the Bucks, Lakers, Pacers, Raptors, Rockets, Sixers, Spurs, and Trail Blazers will get to Orlando on July 9.
In a separate tweet (link), Charania reports that the NBA’s bench dress code for team personnel and inactive players has been adjusted for the restart. Instead of being mandated to wear sport coats or suits, players will be allowed to wear polo shirts (either short- or long-sleeve) for “team business,” and coaches are now permitted to don short- or long-sleeve NBA polos as well.
Former NBA commissioner David Stern instituted the previously extant dress code in the 2005/06 season.
What’s the point of the new dress code? I mean what was the point of the dress code update back in 05/06 really… but still seems like an odd little quirk that they’re relaxing it now all of a sudden. I guess when in Disney World… dress like you’re in Disney!? haha
I think also because it will be the heat of summer in humid Orlando plays a little into that decision
It’s also going to be much harder to get all those suits and dress clothes dry cleaned and pressed. Easy change, so why not do it?
Agreed
Dress code should be a level 4 hazmat suit.
Now seems like the right time to get rid of the dress code. It was originally put in post-Malice at the Palace because the NBA had image issues, but seems like something only done to make white people comfortable.
Nothing’s changed on that score, or probably will. But, this is a camp, in a hot place, and eventually they will show the players during off-court activities. There is no talk of that now, but it makes sense as a content-supplying moneymaker. Suits would be a drag.
Stern’s old dress code was pretty stiff. I’m sure players and coaches will be happy to be a little more comfortable with a more modern dress code that better reflects the work place of modern day America.
Coaches should also be able to wear Shorts if want to.
I think they should all be required to wear board shorts and an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt.
Too bad Stan Van Gundy isn’t coaching…
Ironically one obvious thing was omitted from the dress code – MASKS!
Shorts ha. How about banning coaches standing in front of players waving their butts in front of the players blocking their view. They don’t really do that in the NBA because the players are seated so far from the middle, but it would be a good example for the high school level. Pennsylvania used to ban coaches from even standing.
