A number of traded player exceptions that were scheduled to expire in July had their deadlines pushed back to coincide with the NBA’s revamped offseason schedule. In order to give teams the opportunity to maximize their resources, the expiration dates for those trade exceptions have been postponed to ensure they fall after the start of 2020 free agency.
For instance, the Warriors‘ $17.2MM traded player exception, generated in last July’s Andre Iguodala deal, had initially been set to expire on July 7, one year after the team traded Iguodala and one day after the NBA’s July moratorium ended. Now, with the free agency moratorium scheduled to end on October 23, Golden State’s TPE will expire on October 24, giving the team a small window to use it.
Presumably, if free agency gets delayed again, as has been rumored, the deadlines for that Warriors TPE and others would be pushed back again too.
As we explain in greater depth in our glossary entry, traded player exceptions allow over-the-cap teams to acquire players without needing to match salaries. The Warriors’ Iguodala trade exception is the one that’s most frequently discussed and speculated about, but Golden State isn’t the only team with a TPE that could come in handy this offseason.
Listed below are the 10 most valuable trade exceptions still available, along with their current expiration dates. Teams that go below the cap to use their cap room this offseason will have to forfeit these TPEs to do so.
- Golden State Warriors: $17,185,185 (10/24/20)
- Oklahoma City Thunder: $10,389,997 (10/27/20)

Dennis Schröder to Golden State makes perfect sense.
Bulls want Paul Schroder Adams
Thunder get Satoransky Lauri Young Porter Lavine
I’ve been wondering who the Warriors might Target with that valuable 17 million-dollar exception. There’s been talk about Rudy Gay. Dennis Schroder is a magnificent player who would be awesome for a three guard line up in small ball. That would be a major major coup for Golden State.
Trade Chris Paul to Knicks for the 27th pick would create $41.4 million TPE
Correct?
Warriors aren’t getting Giannis for sheet like Wiggins pick 2 in a draft with no star talent and the wolves pick sorry forget about it not happening !
What they should do is package pick 2 and the wolves pick With the tpe and see what they can get ! Forget trading Wiggins he’s a billion dollar sunk cost as a trade asset who makes offers worse
Wiggins 25 yrs old is opportunity cost
Horford 35 yrs old is sunk cost
I wouldn’t want to trade for either of them
Then you definitely should not acquire them for the team you run.
Ho ho Silli
Actually given the CBA matching rules, and the filling of nearly all capspaces these days, guaranteed contracts in general are more sunk than ever!
Keep the draft picks because you need some cheap players. Wiggins will do well being the third option on the team on offense. Solid starting 4 in green, Thompson, Curry and Wiggins. Add a rebounding Center. Now just work on the bench.
I proposed Warriors to use TPE for Satoransky
Two guard
Potential to shoot over 42% from the three
Warriors have three guard lineup with Wiggins. He’s more a 2 than a 3. To me it’s his best position. It’s why I don’t think they keep him. It could take till trade deadline. They will move him. Gordon makes most sense. He’s a true wing and does not need the ball. Chemistry wise just a good fit. Warriors will use that MTE. Depending what they do in draft, pick or trade. Will go a long way in telling how they use it. And on who.
Gordon doesn’t fit the TPE. His salary is $18 million, TPE max. is $17.2.
That’s PTE my bad. also have mid level player Exception.
Serge Ibaka is a perfect fit for the Warriors, if that TPE can be used for him. Then trade the pick and Wiggins for Gobert. Sign a couple ring-chasers and find a back up point guard that can knock down the occasional 3 and they’re right back in the mix.
Obama is a free agent I think.
Ibaka is a free agent
Yes, and his current salary would be too high for the TPE anyway. Dubs can’t offer a FA anything above the $6 million taxpayer MLE.
Myles Turner a great fit for the W’s and is available if the salaries can be matched up.
