Veteran point guard Fred VanVleet is among the free agents who will receive interest from the Knicks this offseason, says Ian Begley of SNY.tv, confirming previous reports. While New York has its eye on VanVleet though, Begley disputes a rumor suggesting that the club already has an offer prepared for him.
As Begley explains, the Knicks are likely preparing for dozens of different scenarios involving free agency, the draft, and possible trades. In some of those scenarios, VanVleet figures to be among the team’s top targets. However, in others, a pursuit of the Toronto guard is far less likely — for instance, Begley doesn’t think New York would go after VanVleet if the team trades for Chris Paul or selects one of the top point guards in the draft.
Here’s more from around the Atlantic:
- Bench shooting and veteran leadership figure to be priorities for the Celtics as they weigh roster moves this offseason, says Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston. Forsberg is also skeptical that the team will keep and use all three of its first-round picks next month after carrying seven rookies on its 17-man roster in 2019/20.
- Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri has a history of being aggressive when it comes to locking up players to early extensions, but two factors will be working against extension-eligible forward OG Anunoby this offseason, according to Eric Koreen and Blake Murphy of The Athletic. As Koreen and Murphy observe, low-usage players like Anunoby don’t often sign rookie scale extensions, and a new deal would compromise Toronto’s cap flexibility in 2021.
- The possibility of an Anunoby extension is one of a handful of interesting subplots for the Raptors this fall, according to Danny Leroux of The Athletic, who previews what he refers to as a “truly landmark offseason” for the franchise.
Knicks fall in love with VanVleet
VanVleet = hot commodity = overpay contract
First paragraph
Knicks already have an offer prepared for VanVleet.
…Begley DISPUTES a rumor suggesting that the club already has an offer prepared for him.
The sentence you reference is suggesting the opposite of what you’re saying.
Second paragraph.
They have several, not just one. Whether or not the lawyers have written up the offers yet, who cares. I assume the lawyers can do their jobs on time.
Yes, you said he would receive a max contract weeks ago. We remember.
Ha.
Ainge to Forsberg…
We love all 7 of our rookies and are really happy with their progress. We love our core and how they complement each other. We also value our draft picks and dealing Gordon Hayward for value is not realistic.
However, we have a lot of work to do?!?
Nailed it
VanVleet is good but not great so don’t offer him the max. Stay the course and hopefully catch the big free agents in a few years.
Knicks draft a PG. Van goes where exactly.
Bro sillyman. Do you understand you are the biggest proponent of Ball to Knicks. You have us trading everything and everyone for Ball in draft. Yet you still have us overpaying VanVleet. Do you understand they play the same position. Why would Knicks, any give up all their assets. For two players that play same position. Dude take a breath before you post. We are not going anywhere.
Knicks have already had talks about Rozier. They have scouted Halliburton. They have scouted Hayes. They have scouted Anthony. They scouted Kira from Bama. So if they draft a PG. They will not spend money on PG. Considering we already have two signed. Knicks are not going to get capped out. When next yr is biggest FA yr in history of NBA. Ok so relax with the Knicks. Leave espn alone.
You want to know about Knicks. Follow Thibs. He is the man in charge. He will make his mark on this team. Starting with the draft. It will always come to him. Trust me.
FVF will either be brought back at 16-18M over 4 years, S&T or just walks to the Knicks or Hawks. Same story. Toronto should let him go tho and bring in Justin Holliday or Emanuel Mudiay and draft a guard. Lowry is back and can be reupped on a team friendly 2 yr deal, Powell has stepped up.
Preserve the cap space, enough for 2 max slots in 2021-22 offseasons.
Raptors did not win the East this year
VanVleet market value drop to 110 million
64m contract is too low
Holiday is a liablity on D, Mudiya should be playin G league ball next year
These guys aren’t starters, they are depth and gap fillers.
So you suggest letting starter go and replace him with depth pieces? FVF was a vital part of the team, letting him go will make them worse and put too much pressure on Lowry and Siakam
FVF lost his value by 18 M in the last 18 seconds of the final game against Boston, by not asking for time out when he was boxed up and not making that bad selected shot…
FVF did not lose $18M based on that last game against Boston. Someone is going to offer$20M+ a season, and the Raps would be smart to not go that high.
$1.8mil then, but not disagreeing. Thing is FVV’s limitations were exposed. It may not have happened if there was no restart camp to get some players like him knocked off their balance, and such a camp may not happen again, but info was provided that could be noted by contract-ors like Ujiri. IMO he looked ridiculous at times and $15m is too high.
Vanvleet to the Knicks? I think it would be a good move for both sides, Knicks get a great player and that player gets paid. But what would the Knicks do with their other guards?
Pressed post too early…maybe this is the year we finally see them deal Frank.
