J.J. Redick spent just two seasons in the City of Brotherly Love, but they were solid campaigns, both of which resulted in postseason appearances for the Sixers. Somewhat surprisingly, however, Philadelphia elected to let Redick walk in free agency last summer.
Redick inked a two-year, $26.5MM pact with the Pelicans, but the sharpshooting veteran still has some strong thoughts on his departure, as he expressed on Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes’ “All The Smoke” podcast, per the Philly Voice.
“They f—-d up not bringing me back, man,” Redick said. “They f—-d up not bringing me back.”
Redick, 36, enjoyed two of his best seasons with the Sixers, averaging 17.6 PPG and 2.8 APG across 30.8 minutes in 146 regular-season contests. However, accommodating large-dollar deals for the likes of Al Horford and Tobias Harris meant that the Sixers priced themselves out of certain acquisitions, Redick being at the forefront.
Uncertainty surrounding the Sixers remains as the organization parted ways with longtime head coach Brett Brown and today made official the hiring of Doc Rivers. Frequent roster turnover has been a constant for the Sixers in the past decade and Redick indicated that has been one of many issues that hurt the team’s chances in its championship pursuit.
“I’ve said this before, but the one consistent in Philly has been personnel in and out,” Redick said. “Like, you just have a ton of players that come through there. And so I think — Joel (Embiid) talked about this on my podcast — for him, he’s played with like, I don’t even f—ing know at this point, hundreds of teammates. It’s just a rotating cast of teammates, you know?”
It’s Phila. Trust the processes cheese.
ooops: PROCESSED CHEESE :)
Yea,they could’ve used his shooting. But that’s his whole game.As much as people say they need to move Harris and/or Horford, all they really need to do is add shooting. And they can do that with 21,34,& 36.Even the late 2nds could possibly net them shooting. They missed Butler’s killer instinct, but Jj’s game is very replaceable. Before the Butler/Harris trades, they were not that much better than they are now. Those teams just didn’t have the higher expectations.
Despite everyone writing them off,i think they’re in better shape then people think.I like that so many are writing us off as a failed process. Most of the roster turnover that’s mentioned here occurred during the Scam Stinkie years.Horfords a very expensive backup, but he can still play a pivotal role, considering the starting center will miss games. All they need is shooters, and they can get that from the draft.
IMO
It’s correct to let Redick go
Then sign someone like Duncan Robinson
Finally use Horford 109 million to sign or trade for a young player
Attach a few Firsts and cap room
You know Redick hasn’t played for them for a few years…right?
Redick has been gone for 1 season
Ok…a year and a half.
Redick has been gone for more than a year, and with what money do you suggest they sign Duncan Robinson with, who by the way has a team option, which I am pretty sure the Heat will pick up seeing as it’s $1.6M.
Dude, research before you post anything else on this site.
Yes,technically he’s been gone for over a year, but it’s still only been 1 season.July 2019,same time Butler went to Miami and Horford came to Philly.
Horford has average 7 points per game in playoffs
7 million a year is enough for him because he is not worth much when he reaches age 37
This year playoffs
He’s not signed for his age-37 season. He just played his age-33 season. He has 2 guaranteed years left, that’s 34 & 35.And then he has a partial guarantee for 36.That age 36 season he would be a trade chip for teams looking to cut salary.
In January 2021
The beginning of the next season Horford is 34.6 years old. If you add 3 more years his age will be 37.6.
Is this correct?
His birthday is in June, after the season is done.Covid has the schedule messed up now,but it’s not gonna stay that way. This year as a whole is a fluke. That 4th season he would play the full season at 36.At the most, you’re talking the finals, and maybe a game or 2 of the conference finals that he would be 37.And that’s still if the team he’s on makes it that far.And again, that year he would have a partially guaranteed contract,he would be a trade chip, the contract would still give him value that year.
A normal NBA season is November to April
It’s a good point. Going thru all those players. A real team needs continuity. Probably their worst move in all this. And Sixers do need shooters around Ben n Embiid. Frankly I’m shocked they got Doc. But he is good for this mess. If anything he can bring in stability and direction. That can go a long way in fixing this team. Horford is a player they have to move. Chemistry wise it is a bad mix. Don’t need to give him away. Don’t panic here. Doc should be able to help here. Sixers get value for Horford. Depth, shooters, a PG. They will improve immensely. Their picks in top of second rd. Also can help with Depth or trade. Make some wise moves they will be right back in East contention. Signing Doc was the first one.
If the 6ers can get value for Horford, then they should move him.But all the talk that they should(or need to) attach draft picks to move him,i disagree with.If they can get value,Buddy Hield,Jrue Holiday,or anyone along that tier, then fine, attach a pick or 2.But the chemistry issue is with him and Embiid playing together.Teams that could use centers, could just as easily sign Ibaka,Gasol,Baynes,or other free agent centers for less money. So teams might demand the draft picks. And if that’s the case,i wouldn’t move him.Id keep him and keep Embiids regular season minutes down.Have them split the minutes at the 5.
5- Embiid/Horford
4- Harris/Scott
3-JRich/Thybulle
2-Milton/Korkmaz
1-Simmons
If they draft shooters they could have 2 strong units.Milton could also run the point on that 2nd unit.Pelle and Smith would be 3rd options at the 5 & 3.And while those 3’s are more like 2’s,the role id see them in would be defensive wings. And with a 6-10 pg,you can go a little undersized at the 3.Simmons developing and actually shooting the ball has to happen, regardless of what happens with the rest of the roster.
Horford is a solid vet. He and Embiid in today’s NBA us hard to pull off. Duncan, Robinson would be hard to pull off. It’s more a style not a front line system. He’s paid too much to be an option right. But a team like BO can use a big vet. I know Knicks could use him. He can start a yr and mentor Mitch. He is still valuable to certain teams. Look at Celts without him. They had him they would have beat Heat. I’m not a Celts fan. My point is. He still has value. So even in a three way trade. IMO Sixers can get value. Yes they might have to add a pick. But if you are getting what you want. It’s worth it. I think Nets could use him. Makes them deeper. Gives them more options. Can go small with him. He’s a guy who knows how to fit in and win. The Kings could use him. He makes them a playoff team. Can play with Bagley (Buddy to Sixers). All I’m saying is. Sixers don’t need to give him away. There’s a trade out there. That will give them value coming back. And that means a lot. Considering he is not even playing now. You can’t sign a player for 27 mill a yr. And be a backup or not play. They have to search for that trade. Personally I like Horford. He’s a solid team guy. And a good citizen who can help a team. Just needs to be in right situation.
Just saying ……… Hayward is making 31 mill.
Horford is making 27 mill. Who do the Celts wish they had ?? The man has Value.
damn it feels good when a player says exactly what they mean instead of sugar coat and everything and the PC talk just talking straight from the heart love the honesty
I’ve got to agree with what J.J. Redick said (minus the profanity). If the 76’s had a chance for a d0-over they would want to keep him and pass on signing Horford. Unlike many people, I would keep both Embiid and Simmons because they are each such special players, and then build around them to complement them (shooters or other necessary pieces). However, I am also often wrong. With their 2 stars they remain a very interesting team to watch.
Sixers make 2 last trades
Buddy Heild for Al Horford and a first round pick
Zhaire Smith for Ed Davis
1. Simmons. Milton
2. Heild. Richardson
3. Thybulle. Korkmaz
4. Harris. Scott. Pelle
5. Embiid. Davis
Simmons and Embiid plus Heild and Harris as shooters. Thybulle at the three is a solid defender. Off the bench JRich leads the second unit with solid vets a land young role players.
High turnover:
One could blame the traditional Philly boo-birds going online and finding flaw with role players, measuring everyone against ‘star’ levels. Get one star, need two. Have two, want three. Have three, want four. Have three and Wiggins, want five.
Some observers say, “trust me, the most stars win”. Ha
(I think, two is enough to make sure the team is adequately stocked with role players, i.e., Lakers.)
Now fans want rid of Harris or Horford, as not to the level of Embbid & Simmons. Overpaid sure, if E&S are there already.
Totally agree with you x%sure! A big 3 is one of the most ridiculous & worst concepts in hoops!
1 superstar is great, might be a bit short to win but great!
2 superstars is great for winning & combining themselves without taking too much out of each others performance!
But you can’t not successfully combine 3 superstars together…
For example, MIA, LBJ was sensational, D-Wade was way below his level & CB4 was nothin’ but a shadow of himself, sadly he gave up a stellar career to be a forgotten 3rd man!
Another example, CLE, LBJ was out of this world, Kyrie was kind of good, K-Love again became a shadow of himself, a guy that played at an unbelievable level in MIN, became nothin’ but a catch & shoot guy, real sad to watch!
That is why this LAL team are unbeatable, ’cause LBJ & AD can perform just about at their usual level.
I was so happy for them when they “missed out” on Kawhi & PG13, this guys would just have been a 3rd wheel getting in the way & not contributing much if anything at all!
I’m sure it was intentional with PG13.
$$ that is the only reason he isn’t in Philly. They didn’t want to pay him more than 26.5 over 2 yrs. And it goes to show you how short term memory works for athletes bc they gave him 1/23M and 1/12.25M, well above what he would have gotten at the time in FA. His deal before Philly was 4/27.75M. He chased money, not winning. If he chased winning, he wouldn’t be in New Orleans. Also, he can’t guard a 75 yr old Hooper at the YMCA at this point of his career.
Sixers never should of gotten Horford. Apparently they didn’t get enough for Butler either
What a mistake to let JJ and Ersan go
JJ is right…they should have kept him…and he should clean up his language. Horford was a luxury…not a need…expensive insurance for Embiid bad feet. Now they are stuck.
Horford was a horrible signing midway through the season he was leading the sixers in 3PA. Gotta be delusional to think someone’s gonna eat that contract.
