Were the Knicks to move forward Kevin Knox and additional pieces in a win-now move to acquire All-Star point guard Chris Paul from the Thunder, former Knicks All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony could be interested in a return to Madison Square Garden, per Marc Berman of the New York Post. Both are former CAA clients of current Knicks president Leon Rose.
The 36-year-old Anthony, an unrestricted free agent this offseason, most recently served as an important starting forward for the Trail Blazers during an exciting run in the NBA restart this summer. He played with the Knicks for parts of seven seasons. Anthony enjoyed his most success with the club during the 2012/13 season, when he led a veteran-laden Knicks team to a 54-28 record and a conference semifinals appearance.
There’s more out of New York:
- Knicks bench point guard Dennis Smith Jr., the No. 9 pick in 2017, still has ample backing within the front office, according to Ian Begley of SNY. Earlier this month, Smith attended the voluntary mini-camp team practices held by coach Tom Thibodeau and his staff. Smith missed 32 games this season due to various injuries and the death of a family member.
- UNC point guard Cole Anthony, son of former Knick Greg Anthony, is apparently being given minimal consideration by the Knicks’ front office with the eighth pick in the 2020 draft, according to the New York Post’s Marc Berman. The team would be open to taking Anthony, who missed part of his lone college season with a knee surgery, with the No. 27 pick if he falls that far, says Berman, but the guard isn’t expected to be an option for New York in the lottery even if the club trades back a few spots.
- Mike Vorkunov and John Hollinger of The Athletic have written an epic piece unpacking potential Knicks trades the team could engage in during the 2020 offseason. Both agree that New York will actively look to improve its roster heading into the 2020/21 season, and that all Knicks not named RJ Barrett or Mitchell Robinson could be on the trading block.
How do you go all in as the Knicks when all you got are unproven guys with potential in Barrett and Robinson? This is why the Knicks only had a few really good years since Ewing left.
Let me help you as a Knicks fan here…”all in” is verbiage for ‘sign players past their prime,’ hence the mention of CP3 and Melo. That’s all in.
Trade for CP3, sign Melo, Jamal Crawford as the 6th man, Tyson Chandler to grab boards, and Vince Carter.
Yes, I agree! They should continue the rebuild for at least one more year. Don’t bring in old dinosaurs like Paul and Carmelo to a rebuilding team.
Look at the Rangers at how you do a total rebuild .
And the Rangers did that relatively fast, too. Some luck involved as well the last two years in the draft.
Young is too young and old is too old.
Starters:
37 years old Melo
19 years old LaMelo
36 years old Chris Paul
19 years old Barrett
19 years old Mitch
the only age you got right was LaMelo. How do you do it?
Same way he misspelled Sullivan
Not sure I agree with the team not giving serious consideration to Cole Anthony. NY roots, talented, plays a position in need…not that much of a gap between him and others at that drat pick.
Knicks really like Cole. Per article, they will pick him at 27th.
Give me a break he isn’t falling to 27
Agreed. Not sure how he falls past 10.
Chris Paul is old. Knicks need young players with speed. Melo? But him a rocking chair. Knicks will be a mess for 5 years more if they take these 2.
Knicks will be a playoff team next year with CP3. What will keep them a mess for 5 more years is to continually take young guys in need of mentoring and not giving them mentors. DSJ or Ntikilina (whichever one they keep) would benefit greatly from playing behind CP3 for 2 years. Melo could really help Barrett’s pro game. Mitchell Robinson could benefit from a year playing with Tyson Chandler.
No one is expecting CP3 or Melo or Chandler to get 36 minutes a game like in their primes, but to just write them as “old” is beyond ridiculous, especially Paul.
What’s beyond ridiculous is expecting Chris Paul to stay healthy for two straight seasons and also continue to perform at an All-Star level once again in 2021. Before he was miraculously able to stay on the court for 70 games this past season, he missed an average of 23 games in each of the previous three seasons not to mention his costing the Rockets a championship by getting hurt during the 2018 WCF.
Knicks will get less performance from whatever they use to get CP3 with. It’s a concept some “fans” will never understand.
Money has already been obligated to someone and comic-book heroes do not exist so dreaming of your perfect candidate is not allowed.
That doubles as my political message!
At least you aren’t bitter.
I say, try to work out a trade with Houston to get Westbrook.
Watching Thibodeau try to tell Carmelo Anthony to play defense would be better than the product on the court. Please make this happen
Oh man, as a Celtics fan I REALLY hope Paul and Melo aren’t reunited in NY! How will I be able to sleep at night? Especially if they don’t trade Kevin Knox? Can you say dynasty?
Really all in now to win. Wow I don’t got time for this. Imagine these guys make a living writing this nonsense…..
Leftyorioles will no doubt trade Simmons or Embiid for DSJ.
Now if the Knicks do strike out on their prime candidates… I think you could work a Horford + Smith + Picks deal for Randle or Portis, Ntilikina and DSJ.
Gotta love the Knicks if your a fan of another team. They literally have one of the biggest cities in the country where stars would love to be. They have a history and have a huge fan base yet they are utter crap.
They want to bring in CP overpaid 3, Carmelo and LaMelo what an interesting combo with Tom Thibs. You just know that they will not win more than 30 games for another 5 years.
Like even if they drafted well and got someone like Tatam they could build about they would trade him away for nothing to start rebuilding again (Kristaps Porzingis).
Atleast Brooklyn when they traded away all those first round picks they were was a purpose and it didn’t work out and look at them now. Kyrie, KD, LeVert, Allen, Jordan and Harris. They are literally on the same level as the Cleveland Browns.
Browns 3-1, three in a row, leading the NFL in team rushing by a large margin, without relying on qb yards like the Ravens last year. And their unis are less ugly. Gotta say
Yes this year they are doing a lot better but I meant historically the Knicks are on the same level as bad as the Browns.
As for the rushing yards we all know they will dry up with Chubb now injured, yes Hunt can make metres but that’s like the Heat losing Bam but having Okynyk and Leonard.
Yes Browns mgmt is the worst, hopefully now it’s straightened out. Or is it sorted out. Do they actually say metres there lol you used yards too! Hunt about kills himself when he rushes, I hope they don’t overuse him.
Personally I’d like to see a trade
Blake Griffin and the 7th pick for Julius Randle, Dennis Smith Jr, Wayne Ellington and the 8th pick.
Seems like a rather meaningless trade but I think it’s good for both sides.
Pistons clear salary cap space, get younger and begin a full rebuild. They would have DRose helping DSJ which I think would be a good mentor for him. Plus Luke Kennard with Sekoyu Doumbouya. Then Randle who is still only 25 with Christian Wood plus a good draft pick but without an exact need which lets them take the best player available.
New York would be getting Griffin and a slightly better pick. Griffin who is overpaid but would be a star in the big city and would be able to attract other players. Plus I think he would be a good mentor for Mitchell Robinson and RJ Barrett and would be more entertaining for the fans. They would also be getting a better pick which is a good positive. At 7 they likely miss out on Ball, Edwards, Wiseman and Toppin but would still have the likes of Okungwu, Haliburton, Avdija, Okoro and Hayes among others.
You may think the Knicks don’t really get much other than a bad contract but what are they giving up Randle who puts up meaningless numbers, Ellington who they are likely to just cut anyways and DSJ who they don’t care about. So you’re really swap Randle for an upgrade and getting rid of DSJ to get a slightly better pick.
Pistons probably win the deal but ultimately if Griffin can help Barrett and Robinson or bring in another star then the Knicks win
What other player would want to play with Blake? He will be taking up almost 40% of salary cap, which will severely limit teams ability to add players. Plus Blake is waaay past his prime and is a huuuge injury risk
Who do you want them to spend their money on? Isn’t it bothersome that they are so far under the cap now? Are they really in position to score FAs in 2021?
Using cap space on blake’s contract doesn’t make them better. Thay can always acquire picks to absorb other teams bad contracts, or maybe sign multiple usefull players with potential for that 40 mil rather than having blake
They signed useful players; they just don’t have direction or stars.
I mean they are looking at getting CP3 and bringing in Melo that’s the kinda of big salary and stars they are looking at. So the fact Griffin is overpaid is kinda past the point. The Knicks don’t care about a players salary they just want the headline name.
Griffin is yes past his prime and yes has injury concerns but from a fans perspective he would be entertaining. A PF with handles, shooting ability and some highlight dunks. Plus what he could teach Mitchell Robinson offensively would be huge. I know he isn’t a superstar that would attract amazing talent but I think he could still lure some players.
Off the court Griffin is still a decent draw in terms of advertising and selling tickets and in a city like New York he could do well for himself and the team could use him well.
I’m more or less saying instead of CP3 and Melo why not look elsewhere for instance Griffin. Paul will cost the Knicks a first and/or a promising young player whereas with Griffin your probably getting a pick in taking him
The Knicks DONT NEED AN EXPENSIVE PG costing 38million. THE KNICKS NEED TO BRING BACK Jeremey Lin TO THE GARDEN. Lin is now a champion, A TEAM LEADER , a scorer passer a steeler. He has proven he CAN PLAY , SHOOT 3s
Drive to the basket , defender. JEREMY LIN CAN Play WITH Carmelo And make a great comeback story. The Knicks needs CARMELO FOR LEADERSHIP AND LIN AND LINSANITY FOR EXCITEMENT AND INSPIRATION .
Played in China and did well . The Knicks always pays tens of millions for a guy at the end of his career. DONT DO IT. The knicks have no choice but to being Jeremy Lin back to the garden at a fraction the cost of trade for CP
BRING BACK JEREMY LIN!!!!
Cole Anthony isn’t a top 10 pick, and with all the big skilled lead guards in this draft, it’s not unthinkable he could be around at #27. But drafting him would likely just add volume at a position where what the team needs is a quality starter. He’s the type of player I’d like to avoid in a rebuild.
I’m ignoring any mention of Melo. If the Knicks are even seriously considering it, I’d immediately lose faith in Rose. Reintroducing that cancer into the locker room, one in which (presumably) Thibs is trying to establish a culture of defense and team play would be at least as dumb as any single thing either Isiah or Mills ever did. Yeah, he was a former client. Banking on him will, quickly, make Rose a former TP.
As disturbing as the notion that anyone the Knicks still employ likes DSJ’s game, is the reports of “support in the FO” itself. As a Knick fan I’ve come to associate these statements with their bloated FO’s, filled with legacies of prior regimes and different agendas. If the NY sport scene were a village, Berman would be it’s idiot. The only good reason for anyone in the FO to speak with Berman would be to play him.
I don’t get the Melo hate from knicks fans, he’s literally the only star that’s wanted to play for the team in the last decade.
Without him they’ve been totally unwatchable and completely incapable of attracting or retaining any talented NBA players.
Simply, it’s not NBA 2k. You can’t build a quality team around a selfish, defensively challenged, low efficiency volume shooter who refuses to run the team’s offense or participate in its defense, and smirks at the coaching staff when they point it out. He’s a cancer. THJ and KP6 were each coachable young players until Melo took them under his wing and taught them what a star is entitled to. That’s the best I can do. BTW, no other star in the league wanted to play with Melo, except maybe CP3 and only because they were friends off the court.
Agree on Melo and the vague concern about a bloated FO and irrelevant connections. If they bypass Tyrese Maxey or Devin Vassell to take Cole Anthony it will likely be another regret. They are drafting too high for them anyway. A rebuilder lacking leadership should prefer Maxey setting the pace. He’s like a combination of Vassell and hopefully Ja Morant. Anthony could get jolted on draft day. Even at #27 I prefer Malachi Flynn at PG.
I hope they don’t reach for a PG at #8, or feel obligated to just take one at #27 because they didn’t earlier. I’d like to come out of the draft with a bigger wing (Vassell / Nesmith / Green) and/or a combo F (Okoro / Williams) and/or a bigger combo G. Trade down from 8, and up from 27, might serve this purpose, but there’s enough talent here to just hold where they are. It’s an evaluators draft. FO’s hate that. No consensus to hide behind.
My conversation was less about Mello , although a great leader in the locker room , then it was about the return of Jeremy LIN.
Almost every good player out of a draft fails in NY. We GIVE AWAY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR GUYS LIKE CP , only to be a dud.
The knick fans are tired of incompetence, bad choices ,investment in players that do excellent once the ny experience is over .
The KNICK FANS NEED SOME EXCITEMENT , they will come to the garden and route for the Knicks like NEVER BEFORE . Bring back Lin at the point and a Mello in the wing with the young guys filling in … wow RJ., Mich, a couple of young tough pieces and a another experienced statesmen who has some toughness in middle and You have the garden on their feet .
LINSANITY is a GREAT STORY . All eyes would be on NY . Work in the younger points and 2 Guards to learn , wow that would be great .
It’s boring to have these young guards play making their mistakes … you won’t have fans o. Their feet .
BRING BACK LINSANITY AND LET HIM GO…
If Knicks are planning to take a risk on a aging PG. I’d rather have Westbrook than CP3.
Your not following me
There is zero percent chance Jeremy Kin returns to the Knicks let alone the NBA stop living in the past
I think there was a money issue and people were not used to constant PnRs… but yes it was too short of an era.

CP3 and Meeeeelo? OK, then they might as well go get Glenn Robinson, Stephon Marbury, Patrick Ewing and maybe Latrell Sprewell and Allen Houston. Then you’ll be cooking.
Think TNT can spare Shaq, Barkley and Kenny Smith?
