New Knicks president Leon Rose has exuded patience during free agency with an eye toward next offseason’s potentially star-studded free agent class, according to Steve Popper of Newsday. Though the Knicks had some interest in Fred VanVleet and Gordon Hayward, they were not going to shell out the money and multi-year contracts that those top-level free agents received. New York could still trade for Russell Westbrook if the Rockets’ asking price drops but Rose isn’t inclined to make any panic moves, Popper adds.
We have more from the Atlantic Division:
- Hayward posted a message on Twitter, thanking Celtics fans for their support during his three seasons there. “I know there were some ups and downs, but I will always cherish my experience in Boston. I am forever grateful that I was given the opportunity to wear a Celtics uniform and play in front of the Garden faithful,” said Hayward, who also posted a tweet about his excitement to play for the Hornets.
- The Nets are looking at Bruce Brown as a defensive stopper, Brian Lewis of the New York Post writes. Brown was acquired from the Pistons in a three-team deal and slots in as a combo guard. “Bruce, we’ve talked about adding some defensive players,” Nets GM Sean Marks said. “A toughness, a mindset, that’s what we’ll certainly be looking for in Bruce.”
- The Knicks will retain big man Omari Spellman and he’s got a pretty good shot to make the opening-night roster, Marc Berman of the New York Post tweets. New York has an agreement to acquire Spellman, shooting guard Jacob Evans and the rights to a future second-round pick from the Timberwolves in exchange for Ed Davis. Berman’s note indicates Spellman’s salary wasn’t simply thrown in to make a trade work.
Russ back on OKC huh. Ok
LOL
Maybe they made a deal we missed
hey you know what they meant. ok
It’s fixed, but how are the Knicks supposed to make any type of salary match to get Russ without including RJ Barrett?
Knicks are doing good by making shrewd signings so far but the team really isn’t any better for them. They should offer Ingram the max. Granted NO will probably match but it takes away their ability to offer him less and they can be annoying and add trade kickers and such
Knicks have restart the rebuild on rebuild
They are not planning to offer any money to good players
That’s it, they are saving their money for the players that they believe are worth it, such as players who are willing to sign with them. Eventually there will come a player who sees no better option and says yes to their money.
That’s when the Knicks will know they have found a worthy player.
Do you think van vleet hayward randle robinson barrett is a great team to lock yourself into?
I’m sure the front office of the Orlando Magic do, but other than that…
With the draft and FA now mostly complete, it’s fair to say that Rose has performed consistent with the statements he’s made since being hired. Agree or disagree with his moves (and I disagreed with a number of them), that alone is encouraging.
It’s a rebuild Finally. Phil tried and they wouldn’t let him do it. After Melo was dealt with. They had no choice but to go rebuild the team. Almost blew it with Fizdale. He as a disaster with the GM. Now it’s Rose and Thibs. Considering Rose knows college talent and scouting it. He is doing the right thing. Not rushing into anything. And letting the young guys grow up. Thibs has rebuilt in Chicago and Minny. Butler was right about Minny. But Thibs paid price. He was GM too, so some blame. Knicks have to let this youth movement play out. Toppin was a great pick. Quickly at worst is a solid backup who can shoot. Braz is a young stud. Nttilikina should find his gmmunder Thibs. Unfortunately it might just be as great D and backup. Smith is gone and so is Randle. Knox is another who will be given a shot to show. By end of yr or at trade deadline. We will know about who is staying and going. We got assets to make trades or or to sign FA. We got two #1 picks and three 2nd rd picks next yr. We just need to let Mitch, RJ, Toppin play and grow. And see who we get to play with them. Patience it’s coming. Let’s enjoy Toppin probably be ROY.
Rose & Griffin for Westbrick…
