Some members within the Mavericks are interested in pursuing Danilo Gallinari once free agency opens on Nov. 20, according to Ian Begley of SNY. Dallas will likely join a significant number of suitors for Gallinari, with rival teams expecting that he’ll join a contender if the Thunder wind up trading Chris Paul.
Gallinari, 32, is one of the most intriguing forwards on the open market, averaging 18.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season with Oklahoma City. The Mavericks pursued Gallinari prior to last season’s trade deadline, according to Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News, but backed away upon learning that he wouldn’t sign an extension with the team. Some members of the Knicks have also labeled him as a potential target, Begley notes.
In addition to Gallinari, Begley touched on a number of other topics related to free agency, including how teams such as the Lakers and Knicks are thinking:
- The Lakers are willing to discuss trades involving Danny Green, Begley reports. Green, an 11-year NBA veteran, struggled with his shooting in the playoffs, connecting on 34% of his attempts from behind-the-arc. He’s a career 39% shooter from deep in the postseason.
- Should the Knicks acquire Paul or Russell Westbrook in a trade, multiple teams expect the club to pursue veterans in free agency with hopes of making a playoff push this season, Begley notes. New York last made the playoffs during the 2012/13 season.
- Rival teams interested in Christian Wood believe the Knicks have made him a No. 1 target for free agency, according to Begley. Wood averaged 13.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 21.4 minutes per game with the Pistons last season. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent.
- Opposing teams also expect the Knicks to decline the $15.75MM team option on forward Bobby Portis, which would allow the 25-year-old to enter free agency. The current plan for New York includes retaining Reggie Bullock ($4.2MM partially guaranteed salary) and exercising the $8MM team option on guard Elfrid Payton, though Begley cautions this could change.
Bobby Portis would be a player I’d like to see the Heat target with their MLE. Especially if we fail to bring in a guy like Ibaka or Millsap.
Trust me (from a Bulls fan), you don’t want Portis on the Heat. He has very low basketball IQ. Riley won’t stand for that and he shows up 3/10 times. If he wasn’t 6’10-6’11 he wouldn’t be in the NBA right now.
Absolutely. He has no business in the league, but his physical stature keeps giving him chances. Poor shot choices, lazy defense, occasional breakout games which fool people into thinking he has “promise”. He’s been in the league 6 years, WYSIWYG.
You nailed it! I used to get excited and think he’s a cheaper ‘Kief Morris but that’s insulting ‘Kief..Portis will be a 10 year vet because a team like Portland always needs more stretch shooting. I could see go to Portland.
It’s true he gives you hope he is getting better. He actually fits the Heat. Teams have to not pay him. Like they did Howard. Make him earn a contract. At 25 he can still become a solid big rotation player. Now I understand if you don’t want that for your team. But Heat are not Knicks. He will have to show up there every gm. But I wouldn’t pay him more than 5 mill. If anyone can wake him up it’s Butler and Rylie.
I agree. He was invisible for this Knicks this year. A couple of breakout games sprinkled in, but a scrub the rest of the season. I can’t believe we paid him $15 million to be a backup!
I thought Gibson would be brought back, and that Payton would depend on other things (starting with the draft). Wood fits on the Knicks’ wish list, skill set wise; but only one year playing significant minutes (and not starter minutes).
There’s no way for the Knicks to make a good deal without Houston getting worse. Hard to believe Harden watches this whole thing go down without asking out himself.
It’s just a matter of time before he’s on the market.
I’d love to see Harden on the Knicks… very fun. Think he would look handsome in the uniform, blue and orange colors
Why would Houston make a deal with NY that makes themselves worse?
They’re not just going to give away Westbrook without getting a decent return for him. Obviously the Clippers have the most to offer, but the Hornets also have more to offer than the Knicks do. NY is better off going after Chris Paul, unless they’re willing to give the Rockets either Robinson or Barrett (or both).
“Why would Houston make a deal with NY that makes themselves worse?”
Because that is what happens in a rebuild. Teams get worse in the short-term with the hope of getting better in the long-term. A lot of the time, it doesn’t work as planned. That’s why teams like the Knicks have missed the playoffs 8 years in a row. And why the Kings and Timberwolves have been consistently rebuilding basically since the Clinton White House years.
Robinson and Barrett still aren’t enough tho…
It’s going to depend on what other teams offer
Having said that unless LAC gets involved IDK how HOU moves RWB and doesnt get worse
Clippers if they get involved aren’t gonna move Paul George for Russ at all ! If rockets want back the best players they sent clippers in the original cp3 deal they might have something but I wouldn’t do it if I was rockets ! Beverly, Lou and Trezz all got exposed in the playoffs back to back years
Dude trust me. Harden would be run out of town. We don’t want him and he can’t handle NY. So move on. Westbrook at least a plays both ways and shares the ball. I feel sorry for whoever trades for Harden. I’m sure Houston is stuck with him.
Houston will get worse becuase they have to give Westbrook away for garbage. You are dreaming if you think you will get any assets in return. Just be happy with the extra cap space and roster flexibility
Knicks are making plenty of room for Wood. Getting Wood is a good enough add-plan if they get another of his level also. They’re still not scary though.
I’d rather they somehow draft Ogonkwu and a PG. Christian Wood would suffice at PF, if they could draft a Halliburton for the point. Just NOT Paul, Westbrook, Harden.
Why do the Mavs want Danilo? He’s the same type of player as KP. Danilo probably going to Miami
Which team will make better offer to Ibaka?
Knicks
Nets
Lakers
Raptors
IMO
Lakers can find a way to make $15 per year to Ibaka.
Example: Danny Green and 28 to Pistons for a future protected second round pick.
So the Lakers will give away their first round pick so they can get rid of Green? Is he as bad as Osweiler was for the Texans?
You’re joking right?
Green’s contract is a great deadline piece.
LA should keep him until the trade deadline.
IMO
5 hottest commodity will be overpaid
Grant 4-year 80M
Wood 3-year 60M
VanVleet $100M+
Harrell 4-year $80M
Ibaka 3 years $60M with team option
Few players will accept pay cut.
Lakers and Heat may accept pay cut.
Possibly but unlikely
Dragic
KCP
Rondo
Bradley
Please Knicks overpay for christian wood PLEASE!!
Gallinari is not a good for Dallas. He’s not really a good defender. And they don’t have a rim protector to back him up. Not a wise move. Heat is probably best team for him. If he wants to compete like it’s been reported. He’s not worth more than 20 mill. And I would give less on long term deal. 4-5 yrs for 60-75 mill. Teams need to draw the line on paying rotation players. Gallinari can start but he is not a star.
Who cares about the Knicks??? When were they last relevant ( except for mismanagement to the point of pure comedy)… when they break .500 maybe write about them, until then crickets please. Ty
