With a moratorium in effect, the Pelicans can’t trade Jrue Holiday at the moment. However, they are reportedly listening to offers for the talented combo guard, who has two years left on his contract, including a $27.1MM player option for the 2021/22 season.
Holiday’s hefty $26.2MM salary for next season could be a stumbling block for potential suitors but there’s expected to be stiff competition for his services. William Guillory and other members of The Athletic staff provided their opinions on the teams most likely to pursue Holiday, concluding that the Nets, Pacers, Heat and Mavericks were the logical landing spots.
In search of third star or something close to it, the Nets could formulate a package that might include some combination of Spencer Dinwiddie, Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert and Taurean Prince and one or two first-round picks, The Athletic speculated. The Pacers could offer a deal featuring center Myles Turner, who has three years left on his contract, to make him Zion Williamson‘s frontcourt partner.
The Heat may have to part with postseason star Tyler Herro, salary filler, and a draft pick to entice the Pelicans. The Mavericks would presumably have strong interest in pairing Holiday with Luka Doncic but the potential return for New Orleans is tougher to figure — perhaps a package that includes Tim Hardaway Jr. and Seth Curry.
That leads us to our question of the day: If the Pelicans deal Holiday, where is he most likely to end up?

Jrue to the Twolves for James Johnson, Jarrett Culver, and the #1?
Way too much from the wolves.
Maybe Johnson, Culver, #17, and #33. Jrue is great but he only has two years on his massive contract. Maybe Beasley in a sign and trade.
Jrue is a great player, but they’re not giving up the #1 pick for him.
He WAS a great player. Not worth his current contract unfortunately.
Actually he is, if you ask me
Beasley,Johnson and 17 = Holiday
In 2K?
I think Jrue Holiday is arguably the most overrated player people are talking about right now. The man has really only had 2 great seasons out of 11 years in the NBA. He is a really great defender and an above average overall player, but he is not an elite player.
He has never made an All NBA team. He only made one All Star Game seven years ago. He has only been higher than 9th in the league in either steals or assists once. He has only been in the top 20 in the league in points once. His closest comp on B/R is Danny Green. No offense to Harris, who has had a fine career, but I don’t think anyone would have considered trading the overall #1 pick + more for him. Especially with Holiday’s salary factored in.
To be honest, I don’t know if I would trade anything for him unless it was a salary dump.
Holiday was a very good player from 2015-2018.
According to my eye test, he was an average overall player last season. He struggled finding his comfort zone all season long last year.
If I were Celtics, I’d not trade Hayward for him.
Jrue has had a consistently outstanding on/off, reflecting excellent versatility and ability to mesh with the other guard, whoever that is. He can do about everything required and does in a way that complements others. On/off is a stat that addresses team success, not individual accumulations.
He did decline a bit last year and is now over 30 and short, but, he will be in a contract year.
He would be a good pickup to complement a unique talent like Doncic. Hardaway, also expiring, makes $7mil less.
It’s not that I think he is a bad player. I just think for a lot less than his salary, you could get a very similar player. Danny Green for one. Green makes about half Holiday’s salary and wouldn’t be nearly as expensive to get.
He’s an outstanding leader and locker room guy, the perfect 3rd option on a championship caliber team. Can defend the opposing teams best guard and create for himself and others. A bargain of a salary in the eyes of executives in the NBA. He will net a surprisingly large haul when he’s traded this month.
Holiday is not a good match for the Nets, Pacers, Heat and Mavericks.
Trade Idea
Cavs get Holiday
Pelicans get Nance, Exum and Osman.
Why would the Cavs want Holiday? Why would the Pelicans want the Cavs’ garbage?
Jrue best place is Milwaukee. He makes them a true contender. For a few yrs. Bucks should be making offers.
They were the best team in the East last year. They are already a true contender. Losing a series in the bubble environment to a hot Heat team shouldn’t diminish their accomplishments last season.
Indiana seems like the best destination, but it’s not a clean deal.
New Orleans might get a better deal if they wait and see about Beal and Harden. If both those guys stay put, Holiday is the best SG available on the trade market.
Indiana for Turner seems like the move. Unite the Holiday brothers! Then find another home for Oladipo.
I think it depends who’s willing to give up their best asset between nets -levert & twolves #1 pick.
Not a great fit for MIL, beals their target.
Don’t think turner is enough from IND.
Sleeper could be ATL. They want to make playoffs and he’s a great match with young. Maybe they offer hunter or huerter plus pick.
Jrue isn’t an elite player, but he can put you over the top as a 3rd option and great D. The lack of supply in terms of immediate impact players available will drive up the price.
It’ll be Myles Turner for Jrue Holiday
Then a huge three team trade:
Pacers: Paul George and Landry Shamet
Clippers: Spencer Dinwiddie, Caris LeVert and Jarrett Allen
Nets: Victor Oladipo, Marcus Morris (sign and trade), Lou Williams and 2 first round picks from each team.
Indy ends up with Brogdan Holiday PG13 Warren Sabonis and a good bunch of role players off the bench. Defensively they are very solid on the 3 and offensively they have so many options.
Clippers get a clean start with a bunch of fresh talent and some added youth. They might take some time to get a good fit but once they get it sorted they are a huge threat.
Nets get to add the star power they want and fill out the roster well with Irving Oladipo KD Morris Jordan with Lou Will and Prince off the bench.
Probably the best team in the league on paper.
Imagine the match ups
Irving Oladipo KD and Jordan vs LeBron and AD
Dinwiddie LeVert Kawhi Allen vs LeBron and AD
Curry Thompson Wiggins Green vs Bron and AD
Think you may see a Clippers vs Nets finals and the Lakers needing to make some big moves to give Bron one last chance at a ring.
You have the Clippers giving up George, Shamet, Morris, Williams, and 2 first round picks for Dinwiddie, LeVert, and Allen? And you have the Nets getting Oladipo, Morris, Williams, and 4 first rounders for those same four. I think you either put the draft picks in the wrong place or you are really overvaluing that Nets trio.
I meant one from each team sorry.
So clippers give up one, Pacers give up one and the Nets get two in total
Yeah man, the Clippers are not going to attach first rounders to get rid of George, Morris and Williams unless Giannis is coming in return. The only way your original offer would even come close to making sense would be if the 4 first round picks were going TO the Clippers.
Absolutely not. PG13 just had the worst post season from an all star level player in recent memory. That man was suppose to be top 10 in the league and was struggling to score 10. As for the rest Morris is a free agent so really he isn’t even the clippers property really and Lou Will is like 36 and before you know it will be Jamal Crawford, out of the league.
What they get back in return is very solid. Spencer Dinwiddie is a near all star level point guard and I think he would be a great locker room fit with Kawhi. Caris LeVert adds some scoring to this team, this year he averaged almost 30 minutes per game for 19-4.5-4 while shooting 36% from deep and in the playoffs this offseason he averaged 20-9.5-6 shooting 43% from deep. Then lastly Jarrett Allen, he adds some youth to this team being only 22 and his potential is really good. He averages almost a double double in 26 minutes and in a bigger role in the playoffs he averaged 10-15 and 2 blocks in 33 minutes.
Clippers would be getting back 3 really useful players in the primes or about to enter the primes of their careers. Your getting a point guard that Kawhi wants, your getting a PG replacement at SG that’s really solid and your also adding a high potential centre. All your giving up is PG who disappeared, Morris who is free to leave anyway and Lou Will who is near retirement and eventually a first.
Giving up on a guy you just spent 5 first round picks after a bad couple of weeks in the bubble, which is the weirdest situation in NBA history, is just crazy. Morris is free to leave anyway, but he is still an asset. The Nets couldn’t just sign him due to the cap. Lou Williams is older, but he still played better than any of the Nets last season. It’s not like he is Vince Carter just holding a roster spot. As long as there is some decent strip club wings around Brooklyn, he will be fine.
Dinwiddie is not near All Star level. He’s basically Gary Harris, a good, but not great player. Allen can’t even beat out DeAndre Jordan for minutes on the Nets. And LeVert has a chance to be great, but he is also a major injury question. He has yet to play a full season.
Your crazy
Man you keep sending PG13 to IND… you do realize that bridge is burned & he will never ever ever ever play again in Indy, right?
I think others too have tried to get Paul George onto the Pacers and it’s hopeless. They had him there and hate him now, so why the effort. Even if they liked him, it is rare for a star to circle back, esp when they wanted out. Maybe they have George attached to the Pacers in their head from long ago and cannot shake it out.
Well try harder tazza it’s gotten stale.
Probably all Pacer trades are on hold until Dipo’s health is clearer.
Now tazza is doing the “Lakers needing to make some big moves to give Bron one last chance at a ring” crap. Why would the Lakers have to make major moves to be a top contender?
Lakes would have to make some moves because all the teams around them would be getting so much better. I mean they would still be a top contender but realistically it would be extremely difficult to get past some of these teams.
AD and Bron vs a healthy GSW with Curry Thompson Wiggins Green and the 2nd overall pick.
AD and Bron vs a clippers team with Dinwiddie LeVert Beverly Kawhi Allen and others
AD and Bron vs a loaded Nets team
I mean Bron and AD are both top 5 players in the league but outside of these two who do you have? Kuzma is trash, Danny Green hahaha, then everyone else is basically a free agent.
Lakers don’t need a third star but they need to just add some depth and have some balance
Heat, GS, Mavs, Denver, Nets, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Phoenix all make some sense if they do end up moving Jrue, but I still want to see that team together with everyone healthy for a little while. Obviously a couple of guys are FA, but I dont know if I would trade him right away
I also think there are cheaper options for some of those teams in FA, although obviously I dont know if they would approach the same impact that Holiday would have
Of those teams mentioned, Dallas salary matching situation is tough to figure out. Brooklyn feels like it could make a lot of sense, depending on what the Nets are willing to include. Salary wise, its a little tricky, and maybe they could use a 3rd team, but Dinwiddie, Garret Temple, Rodion Kurucs, and DeAndre Jordan for Jrue Holiday and Josh Hart works financially….
I think this will be easier to gauge as the draft approaches
Mavs and Jrue would be a great marriage. He would be a great #2/#3 scoring option with Luka and KP. And the Mavs need backcourt defense big time.
So what could entice Pelicans? They need a modern day big man. Enter Dwight Powell who is under contract for $11MMish a yr, and a younger poor man’s Blake Griffin. He should be completely healed from last year’s injury. Pair him up with sharp shooter Curry and a throw in to make salaries match (Justin Jackson?), it’s a solid return.
Another option is Tim Hardaway is on an expiring contract. I don’t know why you would trade an expiring contract for another one, but if the Mavs add the #18 pick and Maxi Kleber, that becomes an enticing deal.
Hardaway and Curry have been an underrated part of the Dallas offense, so as a Mavs fan, I wouldn’t want to see either go. But you have to give to get.
Does anybody think the Mavs should go the other way with this and trade Porzingis for Holiday + future draft picks? KP is an offensive freak, but his injury history is concerning and the Mavs do not use him as a traditional post. he’s basically a pick and pop 3 point shooter. It would be a huge gamble that I’m not advocating … just curious as to others’ thoughts.
I just find it hard to match salaries in a deal with Dallas. If I’m Dallas, and I’m getting Jrue Holiday, I wouldnt want to give up Delon Wright, Seth Curry, Finney-Smith, or Tim Hardaway. I would want Holiday with those guys, Luka, Porzingis, a FA at the 3/4 spots, another big, plus drafting players like Josh Green or Tyler Bey, and Paul Reed, and I feel like Dallas is pretty improved….I just dont know how they’ll be able to do that salary wise, unless they can get someone else to take Powell or Klebar and/or a couple of their undersized guards
Might make more sense to go for the lower cost options in FA they have shots at, and go for Giannis next year, being in my opinion the best fit for him
I think dragic, or avery bradler, or marcus smart are way cheaper and will make the mavericks a better roster eithe, if the pelicans asked too much for jrue holiday.
Crazy. Pels say no,don’t call back, bye. Dwight Powell is nothing like Griffin, indeed, he could use some Griffinness in him, and injured players are not worth that much anyway. That list of players formerlyz would not give up for Holiday are all worse. Jrue may have just started his decline but 2021 still matters.
At this point I’m pretty sure it would be KP and picks for holiday well before it’s picks plus holiday for KP. Plays no defense, no leadership, and is a proven injury risk. The KP love died years ago.
Okay, rechecked, and the second option Hardaway + Kleber + #18 is pretty good. Kleber might offer the same benefit to Zion that Jrue offers to Doncic, and even be a starter sometimes… Favors may be on the way out due to lack of fit with Zion.
Lonzo would not likely be hindered by Hardaway instead of Jrue.
Obviously convoluted, and probably a better way to do it, but for Dallas, I think its the only way that they can match salaries without giving up the guys i was talking about. There are iterations with 1 of THJ, Delon Wright, or Seth Curry, but only if they cant move Powell b/c of the injury, and I’m not sure I want to sacrifice having multiple playmaking scorers, and the opportunity to add defense around them, and then move 1 of those shooters

Deal allows New Orleans to sign a FA like Derrick Jones jr, and maybe keep Favors. Also opens up time for NAW, and sets up for their upcoming several picks in the draft. Also stockpiles more assets every year for the next few years….Obviously not great. Probably multiple teams that can beat this, but I personally think Dallas would be better off looking for cheaper options in FA anyway
Who you selling the farm for and in what order? 3 Yr Avgs:
Beal (27) – 25.8 PT, 5.3 AST, 4.6 TRB, 36 3P% 221 Games
Jru (30) – 19.7 PT, 6.8 AST, 4.7 TRB, 33.8 3P% 209 Games
Hield (27) – 17.8 PT, 2.4 AST, 4.5 TRB, 41.5 3P% 234 Games
LaVine (25) – 23.3 PT, 4.1 AST, 4.6 TRB, 37.3 3P% 147 Games
Dipo (28) – 20.7 PT, 4.3 AST, 5.1 TRB, 35.5 3P% 130 Games
Listing stats is a wasted effort, what Beal and Jrue brings to a team goes well beyond the numbers. They’re the only leaders of the 5 and the only two worth building around.
Of those 5 I go
1 Beal (by a very large margin)
2 Hield (just because he is already signed)
3/4 Dipo/Jrue (pretty equally valued depending on whether your team needs offense or defense)
5 LaVine (I’m not really sold on him)
Zion to a contender when he’s a free agent just like AD and Paul. Otherwise, nothing to see here.
