The Mavericks have made the No. 18 overall pick in this year’s draft available as they search for immediate help, according to Jeremy Woo of SI.com.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that the Mavericks will likely be active in trade talks this offseason. A previous report suggested that Dallas would like to upgrade its roster prior to the 2020/21 season rather than waiting until 2021 to make a splash, once the team can open up some cap space.
The Mavericks don’t have a ton of expendable assets that would interest potential trade partners, having surrendered a pair of future first-round picks when they acquired Kristaps Porzingis in 2019. But the team does have the 18th and 31st picks in the 2020 draft, which will be of interest to teams looking to add young talent.
Here’s more from Woo on the draft:
- Expect Florida State big man Patrick Williams to be drafted ahead of his former college teammate Devin Vassell, says Woo. Williams’ “raw skill set” and potential upside are viewed favorably by teams, Woo adds.
- While it’s widely known that Golden State and Minnesota have interest in moving down in the draft, there are plenty of other lottery teams viewed as trade-candidates too. Woo says the Bulls (No. 4), Cavaliers (No. 5), Hawks (No. 6), and Suns (No. 10) are all worth keeping an eye on.
- The Sixers have five picks in this year’s draft, starting with No. 21, but probably aren’t “married” to any of them and are a strong candidate to be active on draft night, per Woo.
- Woo also confirms a pair of items that were previously reported by Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, writing that the Hornets have interest in Onyeka Okongwu and that teams expect Tyrell Terry to be drafted in the mid-to-late teens.
What can they get with #18? Anything significant? Would 18 and KP get Giannis?
Joking right?
YESSSS. LOL
Maybe 18 more pics and KP will get Giannis.
Actually there’s hope that KP becomes a reliable star and valuable sidekick for doncic. But if Dallas did not think he had that upside and wanted to deal him, you would have to include the 18th pick at least as an offset to that huge contract KP signed.
You know he’s hurt again. And having another surgery. KP is not working so far.
Perhaps Seth and the 18 for Josh Richardson and the 34? Or Seth + 18 + 30 for Josh and the 21?
It would probably be enough to get Harden though, right? It looks like Daryl Morey being in Philadelphia is already working there given what has been going on since Tuesday in Pennsylvania. Good job, and hopefully he can fix the mess there after The Process failed miserably.
The process is Alive and well!
Mavs made a mistake by extending KP ! He’s an injury prone and can’t play a full season. I’m not impressed by his defense and besides 3s he is just an average player at best
luka played in only 4 more games than Porzingis this year. does that make him injury prone as well? players get hurt, its part of the game. and when you pair all stars together. their stats will drop… ray allen and garnetts stats dropped when they went to boston… bosh and wades stats dropped in miami. curry and klays stats dropped when KD came. ADs stats dropped in LA. do i need to go on?
if i were the mavs, i tried to trade up for at least 2 lottery picks while trying to keep pick 18. draft as many 3 and D guys as you can get.
clear the salaries of curry, wright, jackson, powell, etc. have enough money to get Giannis, and someone else Giannis likes to play with. honestly Luka and Ginnis just need 3 and D guys to play around them.
i would like the mavs to Draft Devin Vassell, Aaron Nesmith, and Isaac Okoro. i like Haliburton as well but i think he goes in top 5 and pattrick williams as well but i think it will take a year or two to develop.
i know this isnt realistic but just getting 2 of the guys i mentioned above would be great for the mavs.
You can’t have Giannis.
a trade with atlanta last time worked out for both franchises. make a trade with them. give them burnson, dorell wright, justin jackson and powell and pick 31. this gives atlanta a backup guard (something they dont have- brunson), a defensive guard (wright), a project in jackson. and if they dont choose to resgin collins, they have dwight powell as insurance. dallas gets 6th pick and maybe an unwanted contract by atlanta.
i trade finney smith and 18 to move up a few spots in draft (technically dallas would have to draft at 18 and then move it for a player selected before hand)
trade curry and 2025 1st and a few 2nds to get a pick around 14 or 15..
clearing all these contracts (not to mention team friendly deals) to create cap space would be huge. make a run at Giannis and maybe get someone he would want to play with in offseason of 2021. if it doesnt work out, dallas will still have a ton of cap space to get high tier players.
again not very realistic but it could happen
Atlanta isnt taking spare parts for their 6th pick…Its a weak draft, but 6th still holds alot more value than that…lol
As a Piston fan I would give D Rose for that pick.
I really don’t see anything that Dallas has that the Bulls need, so not likely any deal happening there, even if the Bulls have assets Dallas would like.
OPJ might help Dallas but the Bulls would be taking on multi-year salary in order for the deal to match, just to get a late first rounder in a weak draft.
Possible ideas
Delon Wright, Dwight Powell, the 18th Pick and a future first for Rudy Gobert
Delon Wright and the 18th pick for Derrick Rose
Delon Wright, Dwight Powell, the 18th pick and a future second round pick for Montreal Harrell (sign and trade) and Lou Williams.
dallas is sticking with KP at the 5. they want floor spacers, gobert and harrell are not floor spacers. if we wanted a center, we could of given up 2nd round picks for drummond. plus we have KP, Boban and WCS at center and maxi at times as well
Yeah I understand and agree with you largely but I have heard lots of rumours about Gobert and Harrell.
Adding Gobert and his defence would be huge, or adding Harrell at the right price again could be a great deal.
As for Drummond I mean Detroit really made that situation terrible. I’d say 90% of the teams would’ve given up a second round pick for him but didn’t.
rumors are rumors. most of the time it doesnt, happen. plus KP cant play powerforward anymore. if the 4 drives, his knees cant handle it. thats why they are keeping him at 5 and not going for gobert. dallas interor D was actually top 10. dallas couldnt guard true shooting guards. and star small forwards (Lebron, Kawhi)
I didn’t know he would agree to be RS center. Big benefit.
The Pat/Lou/Montrezl axis should be in the house somewhere… Dallas is good because they somehow need a big with attitude, and someone to distract from Doncic.
What kind of help will they get for 18th pick. KP is a bust. Wish Mavs plenty luck. They are not going anywhere in next 4 yrs. West is too loaded for them. So basically start Praying.
You do realize that Luka owns the league, I would think the West fears more Luka & his Mavs than Luka & his Mavs fear the West!
I believe within the next 4 years we will see DAL in the finals!
This just sounds like a sour Knicks fan..If you call KP trash, you clearly dont know anything about the game of basketball…
Maybe Aaron Gordon for the 18th pick, and Orlando grabs a wing player, but I cant see where the salaries match for Dallas, and the same in a Holiday trade. Maybe they should try and grab one of the wings in that area at 18, and then grab a defensive frontcourt player at 31…I have Josh Green and Paul Reed for them at those spots, and those would be good adds to their roster
I liked Patrick Williams, but my guess is whoever takes him that high would have to trade into that pick. I’ve said it a couple of times, i was wondering if a couple of the bigs wouldnt go in that top 10 range with other teams in those spots. I currently have Williams to Phoenix at 10, with Jalen Smith right behind him at 11, but trades are going to efect the way the board goes, with all the interchangeable players
KP isn’t trash just can’t stay healthy just like with Judge for the Yankees. The best ability is availability. Neither one play enough. The Knicks should of gotten more for him and if he was Healthy he could of been the piece along with more to get AD.
