Following a report this week suggesting the Hornets may have interest in a Russell Westbrook trade, general manager Mitch Kupchak carefully talked around the topic during a pre-draft conference call with reporters on Friday, writes Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer.
“Does it make sense to add a big-time veteran player? At first glance, you might say no,” Kupchak said. “But it is my job to research every opportunity. If it’s something I feel needs pursuing, I’d pursue it and bring it to ownership.”
Asked specifically about the Westbrook rumors, Kupchak said he can’t comment on other teams’ players and didn’t confirm whether there have been any talks with the Rockets. He did say the Hornets are “talking to teams” about possible deals though, adding that two GMs from other teams attempted to call him during his 25-minute media session with reporters, per Bonnell.
According to Kupchak, trade talks are unlikely to get serious until early next week. For now, they’re “a big poker game,” in the words of the Hornets’ GM.
“Some of the (media) reports that are released are accurate and some aren’t,” Kupchak said. “It is my job to take every call from every general manager. Ninety-five percent of the time, there’s really not much to discuss.”
For what it’s worth, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link) has heard from league sources that the marketplace for a potential Westbrook trade is “slow developing” so far.
Here’s more out of Charlotte:
- In a separate article for The Charlotte Observer, Bonnell considers why Westbrook might appeal to the Hornets and why acquiring him would be problematic. As Bonnell writes, the Hornets would have to consider how the presence of Westbrook would affect Devonte’ Graham‘s development and whether the former MVP would even want to join a rebuilding team.
- Elsewhere at The Observer, Bonnell weighs the pros and cons of drafting James Wiseman if he’s available at No. 3. The Hornets ranked dead last in the NBA in defensive rebounding percentage and 25th in shots blocked, so if they don’t land Wiseman, they’ll have to address the center position at some point this offseason.
- Speaking to Bonnell in Q&A for The Observer, Hornets head coach James Borrego suggested there are a number of areas he’d like to see the team address this offseason. “We’ve got to get players who have the ability to make plays for others (and) more shot-makers,” Borrego said. “And players who make people better on the floor and off the floor. Often that comes in the form of a veteran. We want to bring professionals into our organization. … That will come in the form of free agents, this summer or next.” Borrego added that the team also needs to get better around the rim — both finishing at the rim on offense and protecting it on defense.
Better trade with the Timberwolves to draft Wiseman, otherwise he’ll get drafted by GS.
It’s a no brainer. The only problem is if another team will offer more to Minnie
Charlotte is a great place for Wiseman. I’m a big fan of his. Hornets should be talking to Minny. Charlotte is better off waiting for next yrs FA. Can spend money more wisely. Instead of going for Westbrook now. This yrs pick is going to be a solid pick. Stay away from Ball
LaMelo will have a much better NBA career than Wiseman.
Why are you so down on James Wiseman? I’m not saying I disagree with you I’m just curious why.
The Westbrook guy likes LaMelo?!
Stop the presses!
Ok …. we will remember this. You and me.
And me !! He never answers that question back?
Why would you trade for that Cancer and pay him all that $$$. Let him sit in Houston.
To their own gov’nor MJ from avoiding them out of boredom!
* To keep
What did Westbrook ever do to you guys? I mean the guy has made the All Star team 9 out of his 12 years in the league and made the playoffs 10 out of those 12 years. And he is also a former league MVP and a virtually guaranteed first ballot HOFer. And yet people act as if he has murdered 4 people and is actively looking for #5. I just don’t get it.
I like Westbrook lol .
Nostril flaring maniac that cross dresses. That’s what.
Hornets are waiting for Wiseman to fall to 3
Knicks are waiting Ball to drop to 8 and Cole to fall to 27
Wiseman and Edwards could be gone with the first 2 picks ……. moving up the draft order should be Kupchak’s priority.
Now’s the time for MJ to call in a favor from Kerr.
Realistically the best thing the Rockets can do with Russ is wait and see what’s out there.
Hornets, Knicks and Clippers are all interested and the more teams and more competition the better the return.
So with that in mind I’d just wait and see for now.
Ideally I think the best they could do is
Russ, Eric Gordon, 2 firsts and 2 seconds for PG13, Pat Beverly and a sign an trade for Montrez Harrell.
Then the Rockets have Harden leading the offence with PG your sidekick and some good outside shooters. You’ve got solid defence with Beverly PG Covington Tucker and Harrell and then it’s just about finding a balance and rotation that works.
Clippers in return get back some picks they need considering they traded all of theirs away. They add a superstar in Russ who is actually better than PG. Russ is a triple double machine and while Kawhi is resting up/load managing he can carry a team with his work rate.
The main holding up block will be the picks, how many to include and stuff. I believe 2 and 2 is good but maybe then Clippers are greedy and what extras considering they have up heaps but that was their own mistake and isn’t the Rockets problem. Rockets would probably be happy to give up 2 if it meant getting another 3 and D wing like PG plus adding quality role players Beverly and Harrell
Feel this this move would make the Rockets a much stronger team but would also make the Clippers much more interesting. On paper the clippers probably should’ve won last season but adding Russ to Kawhi that’s two fringe top 5 players plus the likes of Gordon, Morris, Lou Will you’d think maybe they could go a step further
montrez harrell isnt worth a lot. he is a undersized center who cant space the floor…. hes pretty much a kennith faried type player. just has a high motor. just a lot younger, more obnoxious than faried….. faried plays in china or somethign like that right now. thats where i see harrell in a few years if he doesnt expand his offensive game
Exactly why the Rockets should be interested in getting him really.
I believe the clippers sand Montrez Harrell have a mutual feeling they want to part ways and with him off contract the clippers don’t really hold much value however in using him in a sign and trade they can use him to get something they want.
As for Harrell yes he isn’t worth much as a undersized centre with a huge motor but he’s still a quality player. This year he put up 18.5 points with 7 boards playing good defence while collecting the sixth man of the year title.
In Houston he could be a solid 27 ish minutes per game big. The only reason they got rid of Capela (who worked well with Harden) was because of Russ and Dantoni. Harrell would play with Harden and the shooters or while Harden is out of the game being a scoring option.
I don’t think he needs to expand his offensive game, lots of centre don’t have range. Look at Steven Adams, Clint Capela, Enes Kanter and Derrick Favours. Just keep bringing that energy and will to work
Harrell is a significantly better facilitator and finisher than Faried ever was. Only similarity is the high-motor.
Hornets are the only team that should trade for Westbrook. They just need talent period even if its overrated.
Props to Rick Bonnell for having 4 different articles linked in one post.
Personally, I feel like HOU needs to seriously consider ignoring RWB and just ride this season out and hope for the best. If we’re talking NYK, CHA, ORL … none of those teams have the players to keep HOU competitive.
At least with Russ and Harden you have some small outside chance they both get hot during the playoffs and things break your way. Getting Randle and Wayne Ellington is only going to move Harden to demand a trade too, IMO.
As bad as Steve Kerr hates Michael if Michael ask That man for anything to make the Hornets better , is like asking water not to be wet, people like Kerr! and James want to beat our Hornets down to the ground, in their limited thinking Minds it’s like them Finally Beating Michael, without no awareness that their are just beating his good young inexperienced players, that’s not good enough right now to Beat a Bunch of Senior Citizen All Stars, that’s the concept that’s making them happy, to Beat The Hornets not Help Michael Basketball Team.
