The Clippers, Nets, and Pistons have agreed to a trade, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN and Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter links).
Wojnarowski and Charania report that Brooklyn will acquire Landry Shamet in the three-team trade, with Luke Kennard going to the Clippers and the Pistons acquiring Rodney McGruder and the No. 19 overall pick in tonight’s draft (Twitter link). Detroit selected Villanova forward Saddiq Bey using that selection.
The Clippers are betting that Kennard, who averaged 15.8 PPG on .442/.399/.893 shooting in 28 games for Detroit last season, will be an upgrade on Shamet, who recorded 9.3 PPG on .404/.375/.855 shooting in 53 games.
The Clippers also discussed a bigger trade with the Celtics which included Shamet, Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo tweets.
Kennard has a slightly less favorable contract than Shamet — he’s extension-eligible this fall and will be a restricted free agent in 2021 if he doesn’t sign a new deal. He’ll earn $5.3MM in 2020/21. Shamet, meanwhile, will earn $2MM in ’20/21 and $3.8MM in ’21/22 before potentially reaching restricted free agency in 2022.
Kennard is coming off an injury-marred season in which he played just 28 games due to tendinitis in both knees. However, he looked completely healthy during the team’s workouts in September.
Shamet provides another rotation guard for the Nets at a reasonable salary.
Bey is the third first-round pick by Detroit. It earlier selected Euro guard Killian Hayes at No. 7 and Washington center Isaiah Stewart at No. 16.
Wow wow crazy stuff gotta love the nba
Deals starting to happen and we just need somebody who was drafted in top 10 to be Traded.
The Clippers got robbed by the Pistons.
Shamet is a solid add for nets
Shamet to rockets soon
Good moves from both the nets and Clippers. Also it been good an draft night from the pistons in collecting a few more draft picks.
I have to agree for Det. They clearly are accomplishing the rebuild tonight by grabbing three rookies who should get plenty of minutes next season.
Yes here we go …… Pistons took Bey excellent pick. Better than Kennard. Kennard is a good fit for Clippers
Amazing move by Detroit. I see the fit for Kennard for the Clippers
Clippers won the trade
Nets: Get another shooter of the bench
Pistons: Get a pick for Kennard and another player
Clippers: Get a worse and more expensive
shooter off the bench
Luke Kennard is not healthy
Is this a sign that they have a Lou Will or PG trade lined up??
Houston has sneakily added a couple firsts (Covington got them 2) and Ariza trade clears space.
Possibly
Pat Bev, PG13, Lou Williams and Harrell (sign and trade) for Russell Westbrook, Eric Gordon, Daniel House and 3 first.
Would be a great deal for both really.
Clippers
1. Russ
2. Gordon. Kennard
3. Kawhi. House
4. Morris
5. Zubac
Rockets
1. Beverly
2. Harden. Lou Will
3. PG13
4. Tucker
5. Harrell
Clippers would be collecting back some firsts which they really lack, plus they get a former MVP point guard and clear out all the bad locker room vibes. Huge reason they failed last season was distractions (Beverly calling out Lillard) (Lou Will at strippers) (Harrell unhappy with his role and Kawhi load management).
Rockets also have a locker room issue with loads of players unhappy and wanting to leave. This deal gives them a fresh start and keeps them really competitive. If they can convince Harden to stay which won’t be easy he would have a solid group of shooters, defenders and role players around him.
Clippers fan here. I don’t know Kennard well but losing Shamet, who is a strong/young shooter with lots of upside, seems like a dumb idea.
I don’t recall seeing Kennard’s game in particular, but the stats show him on the rise over the last few years until he got injured last year. The injury is knee tendinitis so its questionable for how it’ll effect his future. Shamet was barely rotation worthy after George/Leonard came in. Was trade worthy with Philly with a decent cast. I see what the Clips are thinking. Its a shot at a player with a hopeful rotation floor and possibility to slide in/out the starting lineup on occasion. They wanted something for Shamet before his value completely fell out if he had another down year on a contender. I don’t see the financials effecting what they can do much since they are already a cap team.
All we heard is how deep the Clippers bench was supposed to be. And that included Shamet. Now they deal him for a guy with bad knees. Franchise is a joke. Always has been, always will be
Kennard is a great shooter…great. He was poorly coached in Detroit…never really given an opportunity. Don’t know about his knees…I assume Clippers checked it out. Maybe Shamet told PG to go freak himself and had to be moved.
So Kennard is gonna save the clippers???
