As we detailed on Wednesday, there has been increasing chatter as of late about the possibility that the Spurs will have an active offseason. Addressing that possibility within his latest mock draft, Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer reports that San Antonio is shopping point guard Patty Mills and is also “looking to unload” veterans LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan.
All three players are entering contract years in 2020/21, with Mills set to earn $13.3MM, Aldridge to make $24MM, and DeRozan on the books for $27.7MM.
According to O’Connor, the Bucks and Sixers are among the teams that have expressed interest in Mills. If the Spurs were to make a deal with Philadelphia, Josh Richardson would likely head to San Antonio in the swap, O’Connor notes.
As for Aldridge and DeRozan, O’Connor confirms that there is buzz – first reported by ESPN’s Zach Lowe – about the possibility of the Warriors pursuing Aldridge in a deal that would involve the No. 2 pick in the draft. It’s not clear exactly what such a trade would look like, but Andrew Wiggins would presumably have to be included for salary-matching purposes.
Meanwhile, O’Connor has also heard that the Lakers have some interest in acquiring DeRozan, suggesting that Danny Green and Kyle Kuzma would be part of a hypothetical deal. In order to match DeRozan’s $27.7MM cap hit, the Lakers would have to add a few million more dollars to that package.
The Spurs typically don’t make major splashes on the trade market unless their hand is forced, as in the case of 2018’s Kawhi Leonard blockbuster. However, with virtually all of their veteran players – including Rudy Gay – expected to be on expiring contracts next season, the team could have some interesting options available as it looks to pivot to building around its younger generation of players.
Wiggins to NYK for #8
You mean #2 and Wiggins for 8 and Mitch
Zero interest in Wiggins for the Knicks.
I would do Wiggins and #2 for expiring contracts. Then I would buy Wiggins out.
Glad you have $100 million to just throw around for nothing. But most people don’t.
Whoever they’re getting back, he’d better be a bloody monster.
#2 pick and Wiggins for a year of Aldridge plus something else…why would the Warriors do this?
LMA is better than any big they currently have. Wouldn’t hurt to try him out and if it works, they’ve got an All Star big they can use next to their main three.
I mean draymond isn’t what he used to be. If they wanted a big 3, an addition to the splash bros he might be the best option for them from what they can get. I’m not saying I’d do it. But I can see why they would
Spurs could have had the AD package for Kawhi but said no because they didn’t want to help the Lakers. Nice job Pops.
LaMarcus Aldridge and Patty Mills to Miami for Kendrick Nunn, Chris Silva, Andre Iguodala, Kelly Olynyk, Derrick Jones Jr (sign and trade) and a future first rounder.
SA gets expiring contract in Iggy, Kelly O, and young player to solidify their bench, Nunn, Silva and Jones Jr… plus a future 1st rounder
If Pops did that great job. I’m tired of teams helping out LeBron. Teams need to stop LBJ from winning they should be sick and tired of him in the finals every year.
DeMar DeRozan should be marketed as one of the best wings available this offseason, including the draft which is weak, but even weaker on wings. Sending him to LA for their bench fodder would be a huge mistake for a franchise that hasn’t made many in this century. There are several teams out there like Denver, Dallas, Atlanta, maybe more that would be a great fit for DeRozan. And those teams have far better assets to give than the Lakers. Look at these possible packages for him.
Atlanta – Hunter or Reddish, the 6
Denver – Barton, Bol, the 22
Dallas – Hardaway, Jackson, the 17
I am speculating on those packages, but they seem fair to me. For a team on the verge of a massive rebuild each of those looks WAY better than Green and Kuzma + filler.
Yes, I very much agree with your take @hiflew. Either one of those trades are good, but with Mavs they could draft a promising guard like R.J Hampton or Theo Maledon with the 17th pick, all while getting a 3 point threat (which spurs desperately need) in Hardaway Jr. Atlanta looks good too tho…
I agree that Dallas is the worst of those 3 packages, well worst for a Spurs rebuild anyway. Although Justin Jackson still has some potential and Hardaway is not really THAT old either. I also agree that DeRozan would be best on the Hawks. But I think Denver is the team that needs him the most. The Hawks are trying to step up into the playoffs, but the Nuggets are trying to win a title.

If only Demar could shoot.
He does plenty of other things, so not a biggie really when you are that good!
Bien dicho! Estoy de acuerdo con usted!
I don’t see the Spurs ever dealing with the Lakers. Ever
Spurs trade Mills and Lyles to Sixers in exchange for Richardson, Scott and two 2nd round picks in 2020.
