The Warriors reportedly see superstar potential within Georgia’s Anthony Edwards and would draft him with the second overall pick, Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle writes.
While Golden State is open to trading down from the second pick, the franchise reportedly believes that Edwards can “blossom into a face of a franchise and multi-time All-Star if put in the right situation.” Therefore, should the Timberwolves pass on Edwards first overall, Golden State would likely draft him, sources tell Letourneau.
In a draft class that short of franchise-altering players, Edwards and his 6’5″, 225-pound frame makes for an interesting prospect. While his defense has been flagged as a weakness, he showed in college an ability to use his build to attack the rim and knock down jump shots with regularity.
With Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson expected back for the 2020/21 campaign, and other pieces such as Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins in the fold, Edwards’ impact may not be immediate. However, with a strong roster surrounding him, it could give him time to develop in a reserve role, Letourneau adds.
Of course, it’s worth noting that the Warriors’ rumored draft preferences have been all over the place for months, with one story from Bleacher Report earlier this week indicating that Golden State is higher on James Wiseman than Edwards. As such, it’s fair to assume there’s smokescreen potential here and nothing’s set in stone yet. Still, Letourneau has been reporting the Warriors’ interest in Edwards as far back as June.
Has Minnesota already decided to draft someone else? If not, how can GS “expect” to draft Edwards. The correct word should be that they “hope” to draft Edwards.
You read this wrong. It says they would be “expected” to draft him if he’s available with the second round pick.
Expect and expected are the same problem. They can’t be expected to draft him if it is not guaranteed he is there. It’s not that big a deal, just a poor word choice.
Should probably be “would draft”. It’s like if lebron were being drafted, every team would be expected to draft him if available
Nonsense. If he is number 1 on their board they would be expected to draft him if he was available. Not the best word choice but not wrong either. Get a life.
If you mean like a life of complaining about and demeaning people online for bringing up a legitimate point, then I’ll pass. Thanks though.
Yeah they should add “if available” to title
The word “expect” does not appear in the summary above.
It appears in the title though.
But I guess it’s using expected not expect.
But I guess there using expected not expect.
Same concept. It doesn’t matter if it is the Warriors or people observing them. You can’t expect or be expected to draft a player that might not be there.
Pretty sure this is just journalism. Posting something for the sake of posting something. May turn out to be true and may not. Regardless, seems like speculation at this point. I definitely expect the Warriors fair weather fans to weigh in over the top with ways they will own the NBA as a result, though.
If you read the article about Justin Holiday that was written by the same author before it was edited then it only further backs up your summary.
It’s in the title…
English is not my 1st language but i understood this perfectly. Plus, we’re in this site where the it says HOOPSRUMORS, LOL!
Who went where with the what now?
“Therefore, should the Timberwolves pass on Edwards first overall…”
It really doesn’t get any more simpler than that.
I think he is the best prospect in the draft, particularly if you discount big men. I don’t think he’s a great fit in Minn, but that pick could be moved so its no guarantee he’ll be available.
Ie, if Edwards get drafted 1st, we’re trading down.
You can’t really believe any pre-draft rumors related to Golden State. They are masters at throwing up all kinds of misdirection so that no one knows what their plans are.
This feels like a purposeful leak by them to confuse other front offices.
true but there is rumors out of the office they made a offer for a all star with the draft pick and was turned down. So it looks more like they are drafting somebody not trading away the pick. Maybe this is to force the Wolves to do something with their #1. Or somebody made a offer to move and pick Edwards but pulled back a great offer to GSW. Nobody knows.
Or it’s all a smokescreen so Minny doesn’t take the player they really covet
If Edwards goes to GS feel free to trade Klay to the Knicks for #8
#8 alone would not be enough for Klay … and secondly I doubt the Warriors hate Klay enough to punish him by sending him to the Knicks
That was funny a #8 for Thompson more like your best player and 3 1st round picks. Thompson is not on the trading table at all. Wiggins is the one on the trading table.
Tactic
Warriors hope Wolves to select Edwards
Then they pick Wiseman
Wiseman has already said he doesn’t want the wolves to draft him because they have KAT. So not sure if they’d draft him anyways.
Agree. They are hoping the Timberwolves take any one except Wiseman.
Hahaha so this is who the Warriors want Minnesota to draft, I see your games Lacob you sly fox
Ugh. I hope this is a smokescreen. Edwards is the guy I want Charlotte to grab at #3. I really do NOT want them to take Ball.
This news feels odd from a GS perspective. I don’t really keep up with GS, but wouldn’t Wiseman be of more use to them?
In my opinion this helps increase the value of the 1st overall pick in trade discussions and put pressure on the Wolves. It had been mentioned that the Warriors were interested in Wiseman as well so…
Any team that was interested in Wiseman would be tempted to trade with the Wolves in hopes of getting Wiseman before the Warriors.
But now if any team other than the Wolves wants Edwards or Wiseman they’d have to trade up to #1 to get either player thus increasing the value of the #1 pick.
It also impacts the Wolves as if they really are interested in Edwards then they will be tempted to draft him thus increasing the value of the #2 pick in trade discussions for anyone interested in drafting either Edwards or Wiseman (whichever one doesn’t go #1).
It’s really a smart tactic to attempt to increase the value of said picks
TRUST NO ONE
Minny has three options IMO. One – is draft Edwards and just move on. They are not going to Finals anytime soon. This starts the building of a winner. Playoffs then solid playoff team then contender. They are you so can grow into that. Two – they trade down and get more assets while getting a good fit and talent for team. Like Toppin or Okongwu. Both fit need at PF and mix with KAT. Okongwu might be better cause their Team D needs more help. Also both are more ready to play now. So they still fit the growing playoff team. Three – make major trade and got all the marbles now. Get that other star like Beal and speed up process …… Those are their best options.
Smoke screens
They will be picking for themselves and possibly drafting their next star for themselves with some luck !I know that one warrior guy gets annoyed when I say there is no star to be had for pick 2 and Wiggins but not exclusive to warriors but to everyone the best two players available for trade are likely cp3 and Jrue holiday !
I know.. you could be right. I just think Wiggins has a lot of potential to be great. He hasn’t shown it yet but I think the environment with the Warriors and their guys will bring it out. Then I see that value as tradable.
But I would disagree with you, I don’t think the Warriors going to keep the guy they pick. I think they are win now and it takes too long for a Rookie to adapt to playing in the fourth quarter of a tight playoff game. It takes a couple of years.
But yeah man keep the posts coming.. I love it and a discussion regarding the Warriors is always awesome.
Not even knocking the Warriors assets at this point just saying teams aren’t gonna trade their stars like Giannis ,Beal , harden , Simmons , Joel before the season! I’m sure warriors can trade pick 2 with their exception to get them a solid contributor if they want! But if they hit on pick 2 that’s a cost controlled run that could help extend their run
You’re right that’s probably what’ll happen .., the number 2 pick plus trade exception to bring in a veteran contributor.
Even if there is no big superstar trade, I’d still love to see what this team does on the court:
Steph, Klay, Dray, Wiggins, D Howard, A Baynes, Paschall, J Crowder, GR3, Burks, Avdija, Chriss.
To me that lineup is NASTY.
No one knows who the Warriors going to draft. But I guarantee this, whoever they draft will NOT be with the team very long. Mark that down. Everyday or every other day it’s a different headline… Warriors in love with Wiseman, Warriors in love with Deni Avdija, Warriors see potential in Tyrese Haliburton. Now today, Warriors love Anthony Edwards.
They’re just trying to build value I suppose in the number 2 pick so they can get more back. Going to be exciting whatever happens.
So they’re not dumb enough to waste the #2 pick on Wiseman? Smart move.
I forget why you are sour on James Wiseman. Someone’s going to pick him in the top three or four. You don’t think he’ll contribute right away? Too limited on offense?
I think its “Another guy who will get a ring before Harden and Westbrook”
I don’t buy that. They need a big men more than a SG unless they want play small ball like the Rockets and get bounced out of the second round the if not the first.
Wiggins is 1 pick but he is expensive
Pistons like Wiggins and 2
Repeat Trade idea
Pistons get Wiggins and 2
Warriors get Luke Kennard and Snell and 2
Talk to Kennard about contract first
Warriors get 7
Warriors trade $40 million for 20 million salary
You know what, sillivan I think you’re on to something here. Number one I like it !!
To Det: Andrew Wiggins, 2nd pic.
To GS: Luke Kennard, Tony Snell, 7th pick.
Here’s why it could happen. Pistons want to move up to take La Melo Ball. They also have been trying to trade Luke Kennard. They almost traded him to Phoenix at last year’s deadline. For some reason the Pistons don’t think Kennard is a building block for the future so they’ll use him as a trade chip. So they’ll wind up with LaMelo Ball, Andrew Wiggins to go with Rose and Blake Griffin Etc. I think the Pistons will also ask for a second round pick.. they don’t have any for a couple years and the Warriors have two this year. So throw in one of those.
Warriors wind up with Kennard as their third guard Off the Bench who can play the one or the two and perhaps be another sharpshooter in a death lineup. He’s still young and improving. Then with the 7th pick hopefully that big man from USC is still available, or pick one of the Wings that’s talked about that can shoot three and D Etc.., or do another trade. Snell is also a little bit better than some of the guys the Warriors had on the bench last year lol. Could be a shooter 10-point a game guy.., knows what to do out there unlike a rookie. Besides someone thought enough of Snell to pay him 12 million dollars LOL must be doing something right.
So I like it. Basically it’s Kennard for Wiggins, and then Snell and #7 for #2. Works out in my mind. It’s not the stud I was hoping for but it improves the roster a little bit. We can’t forget what the warriors were last year. G League All-Star team.
Is wiseman a knucklehead? The only reason the dubs pass on him.
Not a knucklehead…he is a wise man lol
Kennard would shine with GSW
You know what I think you’re right. I like the sound of it. See my comment above. Maybe it could happen ???
So is Ball going 1st? How can you eye the potential top pick at 2?
Imagine if the team picking number one doesn’t pick the top rated player? They might pick the second rated player #1. Imagine that. Could happen, right? Makes sense to me. Perhaps a team drafts for fit and doesn’t take the most highly rated?
Funny to hear gsw keeping the pick, probably that way because no one wants to trade for it. All these warriors stans “we are gonna add another superstar” looks like they are drafting a dude that won’t play and is a weird fit like dlo was. They are stuck with wiggins, draymond and have a high pick in a weak draft. Yikes
I don’t know how many times I have to say it. The Warriors are NOT keeping the player they draft at #2. Write it down in stone. Take a screenshot. Impress your friends with this knowledge.
Yup, they will try to get joel embiid
I’d rather draft James Wiseman than trade for Joel embiid.
Gary Gsw will be the same team as last season expect with an unproven rookie. Again no center and little in terms of cap space to fill out bench. Gsw would be lucky to make playoffs as currently constructed.
You don’t think they’re going to work to get better? I think they’re hard at it trying to improve the roster in any way they can. Their window of opportunity is very short right now. I think they’re working overtime. These are not last year’s warriors with the G League lineup.
How can Edwards be a story for the Warriors. It’s not up to them unless they want to trade up. Warriors are all about next yr. There will be FA who will take less or the minimum. To ring chase with Warriors. Cause they will be in hunt for next 3-4 yrs. Kills me how one yr removed we all forgot who they are. They are a healthy team with Wiggins. Say what you want about him. He’s 25 and one of best scorers in NBA. He’s never been on a contender. So he could rise to the challenge. Warriors could also move him for a better mix player. Wiggins can play wing. His best position is SG. Personally I’m not sure if they move him. But they don’t have to be in a rush to do it. The #2 pick is very valuable. But to Warriors not as much maybe more as a trade value. Warriors can address their need for C in FA. Wiseman is the future and can give them mins next yr. Edwards is the future and can give them mins next yr. Those are the things they are weighing. Winning now has to take preference over all. Toppin, Okongwu, are rookies who are ready to give 30 mins. So trading down for more assets is in play. Also a major trade for another star can work here. Warriors with their #1 pick, ME, Wiggins, healthy roster. Have options to get results. The result has to be winning now. I’m sure they are exploring all avenues. The draft will be first indicator of how they go for it.
Minnesota is taking Edwards. Or they are trading down. Or trading for another star.
