Warriors guard Stephen Curry was devastated after learning that his backcourt partner, Klay Thompson, will miss another full season after suffering a torn Achilles last week, writes Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. Golden State had hoped to return to title contention after an injury-plagued year, but the loss of Thompson is a major setback.
“To get that call was a gut punch for sure. A lot of tears,” Curry said. “You don’t really know what to say because a guy like that is having to go through two pretty serious rehabs now. But at the end of the day, we have to have his back. We hope that he is around and a part of what we do through his rehab and staying connected with us. He can come back strong. He’s a guy that loves the game so much. He is going to do whatever it takes to get back out there on the floor and be himself. That’s what we hope and the confidence that we have. Two-and-a-half years of rehab is tough for anybody. We’re hoping for the best.”
Curry was limited to just five games last season after breaking his left hand in October. He will return to a roster that’s much different than the one that dominated the league for five years, with additions such as Kelly Oubre, who was acquired in a trade, and James Wiseman, the No. 2 pick in last week’s draft.
“Not seeing (Thompson) on the court, at first, is going to be weird,” Curry said. “But I think we’ve done a really good job in the offseason with James and our draft picks and in the free agency pool to put together a really solid roster. We’re going to have to learn a lot really quickly, and we will need a full commitment from everybody.”
There’s more Warriors news this morning:
- Thompson’s injury may have cost Golden State a chance to sign free agent center Marc Gasol, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic. At age 35, Gasol was looking to join a contender and ended up with the defending champion Lakers. The Warriors are still in the market for veteran help and expect to receive a $9.3MM disabled player exception in the wake of Thompson’s injury.
- Management doesn’t believe Alen Smailagić is ready for regular playing time, but he’s likely to be kept on the roster with a $1.5MM guaranteed contract, Slater adds in the same piece. However, Smailagić could be waived later in the season if there’s an opportunity to sign someone. Second-round pick Nico Mannion is expected to be a two-way player and will see a lot of time in the G League, if there is a G League season.
- Oubre, who will be a free agent next summer, is hoping for a long-term stay with Golden State, tweets Nick Friedell of ESPN.
- In case you missed it, the team’s deal with free agent guard Brad Wanamaker is now official. It was completed using a portion of Golden State’s taxpayer mid-level exception.
Give young players a chance
Trade Poole Smail and Mannion to bad teams for a future Second
Save $3m salary and $20m luxury tax
Replace with vet min and count $1m in cap
Warriors just got those guys recently. What are you going to do, give up on them for more young guys? Then give up on them also? Give these guys a shot see what they got.
Yes Jordan Poole’s shooting percentage is way low but he’s fluid and fast has good handles and vision. If he gets in the gym and shoots a thousand shots a day he’ll improve his percentage. And smailagić is a special player. He may be 4 years away but you don’t want to dump him now. He’s 6-10 little bit of a handle, can shoot the long ball, he’s aggressive and works hard. You don’t trade him now for another young guy. He IS a young guy LOL
These guys won’t be in the warriors 10 man rotation
Knicks or Thunder can give them more playing time
Not sure even with klay and gasol that would be enough be beat lakers, clippers, rockets, Dallas or now suns. Warriors should look to acquire more assets via trade and build towards future.
Warriors are going for it this year. Let’s see how it plays out. Of course you always want to have a little bit of an eye for the future but Curry’s 32. Going for it right now.
Curry is a top 5 player but I can’t see him doing it by himself. Not a two way player and adding oubre and wiseman doesn’t make them suddenly a contender. Bench is also very thin and I don’t think can keep up with lakers and clippers or Houston.
You are mentioning the all teams have little future picks
After adding Wolves pick, Warriors youth can take down all 3 teams from 2023 to 2028
Lol
Also Draymond seems like he may have lost a step.
IF he gains his 2016-17 form and Wiggins / Oubre overperform maybe I could talk myself into them being a darkhorse – I think Steph will have a monster season either way
I think Wiggins needed Klay and a full strength team to allow him to grow in the back seat…I think he will be exposed as he is now essentially their no.2 guy…all that isn’t going to help his confidence if he is not overperforming, really hard to see the Warriors really challenging this year…that said though if Green and Curry play like they did from 15-16 and Wiseman can set picks like Bogut used too then Warriors might shock a bigger team in the playoffs…but I honestly expect to see them just tank again…I love Curry, but the fact is he is just one of those great players that could never do it alone…
Does CP3 make the Suns better than Denver? I highly doubt it.
Curry and Draymond are fast pace and fit into athletic young guys
cp3 will be slow pace
I have
7th seed Rockets
8th seed Blazers
9th seed Suns
West is tougher
Warriors are on quasi rebuild
Currently 4 young rotation players
Add Wolves pick
Take down Lakers and Clippers in 2023
Both Lakers and Clippers have no future picks
Perhaps they do, but what about their primary rival during the Warriors 5-year run? Houston gets the Blazers first round pick next year and another future first rounder from Detroit to help offset the two picks they send to OKC in a few years. Maybe in 2023 they can have a rematch in the WCF.
Warriors still contenders. This yr us set up for Wiggins and Obrue. They have good or better yrs. Warriors will be there in the end. Wiseman is a wild card. To me he’s still young. So you can’t depend on him for big mins or even 30 plus. But he could surprise cause if mostly plays D. He can make a big impact there. Still with the exception they got. I would sign Whiteside. You know he can give 30 mins. So with both of them. The growing process us easier, less pressure. And they can get solid big mins from center position. This also helps Dre have a better yr. Cause he don’t have to deal with the bigs as much. He should have a big yr. Sure they will miss Klay. But if others come to play.!They still are a top playoff team. And I want to see who wants them in playoffs. Don’t count them out. The Rockets are about to be broken up. Westbrook wants out. Only reason he’s not gone. Is they are waiting for right offer. Tillman does not have a good relationship with players.
Whiteside makes some sense. Right now they are starting Wiseman at center with Chrisse as his backup.
No. Looney is the Center. Wiseman is the backup.
No. Looney should have never been given guaranteed money…
Wiseman in the 5
This post isn’t showing up in the Warriors feed for some reason.
Should be fixed now.
I’m hoping they hold on to Smailagić and work hard to develop him. The kid looks extremely intriguing. If there is no G League season, that makes it harder, but I have a feeling that he could be great.
Well if Curry is unhappy and doesn’t think GSW can contend, he’s going to demand a trade to [my favorite team] to chase a ring.
See Warriors fans? This is what you sound like on every rumor on every good player in the NBA. Thank God the trade exception is used and gone so we don’t have to keep hearing about it.
Yeah seriously. Steph is good but he’s not a super star without Klay. He’s defense is pedestrian which is why he would never be on the same level as lebron, AD, giannis, Kobe, Jordan, Garnett Etc. He’s in the same class as harden which is star level but not super star
Minor note to clarify the Warriors used the taxpayer MLE to sign Wanamaker rather than the full nontaxpayer MLE.
Sure, I’ll add that.
GSW does not look like a contender, indeed, closer to last again. Predict 14th. Pretty remarkable. Rebuilding-type decisions could be made at midseason. What bappened!
14th in the west are you kidding me ? Thompson was a huge part of the whole game plan both sides of the mall but 14th? I disagree. I think they’re a playoff team. These guys went to five straight finals and they’re only missing Klay Thompson Andre Iguodala did Shaun Livingston. The rest are replaceable.
Thompson plays great defense, spot-up shooter, doesn’t really create for himself. Can Ubre become part of that? Being a homer I say yes, LOL. Andre Iguodala is leadership and playoffs defense. Can the team make up for that this year in the playoffs? Homer says yes. Then Shaun Livingston, a veteran point guard Off the Bench, great teammate.. I think he can be replaced with wannamakers ability and attitude and work. Bazemore too. They’re not a 73 win team but they’re definitely a 6 seed maybe 5 seed. Definitely not 14th behind Minnesota Memphis New Orleans and Phoenix. Heck Houston’s going to have a hard time this year making the playoffs. They could easily be 14th LOL
