Warriors general manager Bob Myers said he already had approval from management to use the team’s $17MM trade exception before Klay Thompson‘s injury yesterday, tweets Marc J. Speers of The Undefeated. Myers was hoping to add wing depth even before the news about Thompson broke. Thompson will have an MRI today to determine the severity of his Achilles injury.
Myers told reporters that Thompson’s injury didn’t affect the team’s plan to draft former Memphis center James Wiseman with the No. 2 pick, according to a story on Warriors.com.
“We had him No. 1 on our board when all the dust settled,” Myers said of Wiseman. “Certainly the Klay thing made you think for a second, but it was just a short amount of time and we decided we’re staying the course of what we always felt, but you have to take pause and think about things for a second. … We got the guy we wanted and excited like I said to get going and get him in our practice facility and get to work.”
There’s more Warriors news this morning:
- In the same story, Myers admits being surprised that Arizona guard Nico Mannion was still available with the No. 48 pick. Executives around the league were shocked to see Mannion fall so far, adds Jonathan Givony of Draft Express (Twitter link). “(Stephen Curry) said we had to draft guys that went to his Under Armour camp, so we had to take Wiseman and Nico to keep our point guard happy,” Myers joked. “It is funny, though. Those guys both did go. He remembers them. I think it might have been in Walnut Creek. But I think he knows, it’s funny, he got to know James and got to know Nico, I don’t know if it was last year or the year before, but I was surprised. We had him higher than 48 for sure.”
- Grizzlies forward Kyle Anderson may be an option to provide wing depth for the Warriors using their traded player exception, tweets Jabari Young of CNBC. A six-year veteran, Anderson spent the past two seasons in Memphis.
- Justinian Jessup, Golden State’s selection with the 51st pick last night, will be a draft-and-stash player, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link). Jessup is already playing for the Illawarra Hawks in Australia.
Klay Thompson + 3 1sts for James Harden.
No thanks. Harden doesn’t want to play for the warriors. Warriors need to replace Thompson’s defense more than his offense.
This season for the Warriors will be very similar to last season once Curry gets injured again as well.
I know that is what you are hoping for. Very sad that you cheer for injuries to NBA players. I think the word for you is pathetic.
Typical Northern Cali mentality. A prediction isn’t “cheering.” I do love how easily upset you people get, though. I lived in Northern Cali for 15 years. Worst people in general I’ve ever known. Petty as hell.
Completely fair weather, bandwagon fans, too.
ya where is your team? i know they didn’t have 5 all stars at any time in the last few years
Ok, i was willing to listen to what you had to say until you made the fair weather fans comment. Thats a lousy opinion with no facts to support that. Look at their attendance every year before their titles. A lot of those years they were between 8th-12th in the league and thats even though they only won 1 playoff series all those years. How much better would you like to see their attendance for a non playoff team? And the fact that you lived in northern caifornia for all those years, you should know there is soooooo much to do around here that we just dont have that live and breath 1 team mentality. You have so many sports teams within 90 mimutes of each other. Warriors, niners, raiders, sharks, Giants, A’s, stanford and Cal football and basketball. Plus all the other outdoor activities are great state has to offer when weather is nice. Its not like we live in some area with crummy weather 9 months of the year and 1-2 sports teams to live and die with. All that being said and they were never a bottom dwelling team with attendance. On top of that, it has always been widely talked about that warriors had some of the best fans in nba because of their commitment to their team when they sucked.
Im sure you say fair weather because you didnt see warriors gear being worn every time you went to the mall, but again when you have 10 different sporting teams gear to choose from in your area, a lot of people will probably go with a team doing better since most of us have multiple local teams we follow year round.
Sounds like a bitter two faced fool that is jealous of northern California. Worse people you ever known sounds like you were kicked out of California. You are a sad troll that praises a player getting hurt. Face it you want your bandwagon team to win because another team star is injured.
Very offensive statements. Asking politely to please reconsider your approach. Thanks very much.
Chief Two Hands = Chief Tweezers. I bet he drives an F350 with dualies (sp?).
Lol asking for a spell check on your insult is not a good look
Great post dunker. Very pertinent to the thread. Btw, I just got done with my morning poop, speaking of Little Dunkers.
and I don’t want to give klay or 3 1sts
For the record, I agree with you guys on Harden. I don’t see him coexisting with Curry. Harden seems very reluctant to share the ball, (despite his assist stats), and I doubt he would take a backseat on any team, which is why he won’t win a ring any time soon.
Very true. Harden also has an edge to him when he wants to defend. Hes more of a tough guy than Curry
harden tough?? Oh please he whines if you touch him. Curry gets pushed down and gets up while Harden whines to the ref.
Kyle Anderson isn’t a free agent.
Lol right? He’s got two more years
That’s why it mentioned absorbing him into the TPE. he’s around 9M and available. high BBIQ and a good secondary ball handler
You mean that’s why it was changed from calling Anderson a free agent in the original story to what it is now. You’re welcome, Arthur Hill.
The smoke-blowers took Wiseman anyway. I recall so many out-of-town posters, and some locals, saying on the day the pick order was established, GSW will get Wiseman. Bob Myers must have been shocked by the obviousness, and worked to misdirect predictions. I noted that he likes to draft crappy wings but how could he screw this opportunity up… like the Spurs, taking Duncan in their one bad year.
Wiseman like Draymond will be an early-offense big, not a post center, and Kerr should be able to make use of him.
Good to hear they actually want him, and didn’t just intend to trade him for something. I think the news of Klay’s injury came first and they could have gone in another direction.
The NBA FO gave GSW a break on taxes so they can use their full TPE. It’s an interesting choice of charity— the Warriors and a few other of the spendthifts. I thought GSW was going to be able to afford things.
I think what they did considering everything going on right now is took the best asset. He will always be tradable, he’s a great player, he can help them now, today, and I think he was in demand. No brainer choice. Especially considering the turmoil in the organization at this moment.
Circle the wagons see what to do next. Avery Bradley? Evan Fournier? I’m sure they’ll be able to plug in a guy that will be just fine. Lots of teams don’t have Klay Thompson and they are playoff teams. Warriors will hopefully be one of them.
Hey Gary. Google TyShon Alexander. He’s regarded as one of top undrafted players. He sounds like a young klay. Lock down defender with high 3 pt percentage.
Btw, I’m glad gsw didn’t overreact to klay injury and change draft plans. Jay Bilas said that and I agree. They should be able to use TPEs and free agency to “replace” klay. I think there’s no question now as to whether Lacob is willing to spend $ and pay taxes
Claude, he looks good !! Too bad the Suns have already picked him up.
Here’s a highlight reel and interview 3 minutes.

I’m looking at the available free agents and see who the Warriors can sign with maybe the injured player exception almost 10 million? If Avery Bradley is good enough to start on the championship Lakers, he’s good enough to take clay spot on the Warriors. I’m sure there’s a few guys available that could fill in decently.
Perhaps there’s other guys that are available in trade to use that 17 million exception. Like I said if they can be starters on playoff teams they can be a starter on the Warriors.
Claude, I agree with you about Lacob’s likely approach now if Klay is out for all or a part of the season. They don’t want fan interest to keep diminishing if they have another year of tanking for injuries’ sake. He’ll spend into and pay the taxes to put a competitive team on the floor, while at the same time not screwing up their longer-term plans by bypassing Wiseman and pivoting to replace Klay with Melo.
I do think it’s worth a debate about whether they should have done the pivot, but I understand why Meyers kept to the plan.
If Ball had gone 1, then Edwards would have been the pick. What Myers is saying is Light Years bs…
Hear me know and believe me later. The Dubs will have a losing record I. 2021.
