What type of trade would make sense for both parties if the Wizards gave up the No. 9 pick for an established player? Fred Katz of The Athletic takes an in-depth look into that scenario, suggesting players such as Luke Kennard, Larry Nance Jr., Josh Okogie and Derrick White could fit the bill. Washington is hoping for a playoff run with the return of John Wall next season, which makes it sensible to deal the pick for more immediate help.
We have more on the Wizards:
- In another take on the draft, Tyler Byrum and Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington unveil a mock draft in which the Wizards trade down. In this instance, Washington does business with Boston to pick up two first-rounders later in this draft, plus a young player.
- Troy Brown Jr. averaged 15.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 4.5 APG in Orlando during the restart. He’s now ready to expand his game, as he explained in a piece he wrote for BasketballNews.com. “This offseason, I’m keying-in on improving my three-point shooting; I definitely have to get better at that. I know my percentage took a leap from my rookie to sophomore season, but improving to around that 40-percent mark would elevate my game so much more,” he said. “Defensively, I want to sharpen my lateral quickness, which would be a huge step for me. If I can get those two things down pat, I feel like I can be in the league for a very long time.”

Smart idea.
Trade for the players who are not expensive: Luke Kennard, Josh Okogie and Derrick White.
Does Kuz fit??
If they trade 9 they need to go after a pg. he can serve as a good 6th man or the starting pg of wall is not healthy or is not back to himself.
Derrick White would be a nice fit as he can play the one through three and take over starting PG duties should Wall not be able to stay healthy.
I’m sure the Spurs have a chore ahead, determining what to offer Derrick White, but it will be worth the effort, and with only $26mil on the books for 21/22, plenty of room for error. They would ask a lot.
BBeal is the PG backup, pretty good. They have or had many play PG. The problem with any taking over was Wall coming back, thus the rep.
Pretty solid writing from Troy Brown.
Larry Nance Jr. fan here but uhh yeah id take the 9th pick for him in a second. But a 10-7-2 guy for lottery pick? Not buying it, Wiz dont make too many draft day mistakes except Jan Vesley
If Troy Brown could grow 6 inches and be 7’0″ that would really elevate his game too…
The educated singles over 45 lady is rather cute
Who in the NBA world would give a#1 pick for Nance Jr. The 9 pick really. Bertans and Rui are fine at forward for them. Wizards will take a long look at Wall. Frankly I don’t see them going anywhere. Best thing for them to move forward. Is move Beal now. While he is hot commodity. They can put a lot of young talent around Wall. Let him lead young guys to prominence. I would be talking to Minny for #1 pick. Wiseman to Washington. Yeeeesss
Troy Brown mentioned he importance of “still hungry” John Wall being back and for himself, of being “secure in your position”. Not mentioning playing PG probably helps that security in the lockerroom :D! lock
But he did s specify boosting guard skills on his to-do list. Right now his stats are broadly solid but not great anywhere after 2 yrs, reflecting low risk-taking for the talent.
I know this draft is considered weak, but trading a lottery pick straight up for any of those 4 players is crazy. Kennard makes the most sense of the 4, but does Washington really need a 2 guard? To me, it makes the most sense to trade for an established big man if you are going that route. Personally, I’d try for Julius Randle. Randle and the 27 for the 9 seems like a fair swap.
I give it to you.
Aren’t trading Kennard for the Wizards pick. They’ve been trying to trade out of their pick, two slots earlier at #7. I’m all for getting rid of Kennard but Washington ain’t it.
Depending on how the board looks, Washington should draft Tyrese Maxey and Grant Riller. and sign a wing, and someone else at guard/wing position that can guard point guards, and a low cost big that can defend the pick and roll, like a Taj Gibson, or Noah Vonleh, or Harry Giles, or someone else along those lines
They have good backup 1s, but need a starting center. That would make the biggest W-L difference, if Okongwu or even Achuiwa is available at #9. Actually I would take Jalen Smith at that point. It’s also a bit early for Maxey & Riller too but fine choices.
If I stay at 9.!I take Achiuwa. He’s a mobile 4 who plays both ways. Great rebounder too. They can sign Whiteside he’s a FA.
Solid idea. Bradley Beal complained that they lack defence and these two moves would help them a lot in that area.
Not to mention John Walls game kinda needs a centre for screens and kind and stuff.
Only thing I’d say is long term wise how do Achiwura and Hachimura combine if they both play the 4? Because of that I’d look at possibly trading down. But I like the idea of Whiteside in Washington
