Kings guard Buddy Hield didn’t have any second thoughts about going public with his displeasure over his situation last year and doesn’t believe his relationship with head coach Luke Walton needs to be fixed, writes Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee.
“I have no regrets,” Hield said today during a Zoom session with the media. “There’s nothing to be worked on. I never had a problem with nobody here, so everything that was being heard, it wasn’t put out by me. I love everybody here in this franchise and this organization, so I don’t regret nothing I said. I’m going to keep it 100.”
Hield’s unhappiness first emerged when Walton began leaving him on the bench in the fourth quarter of some close games, and it got worse when he was removed from the starting lineup in January. Hield contributed as Sacramento won 13 out of 20 games prior to the shutdown, but he remained upset about how Walton was using him.
The departure of Bogdan Bogdanovic, who signed an offer sheet with Atlanta that the Kings didn’t match, may open the door for Hield to become a starter again. However, Walton wasn’t ready to commit to that as training camp began.
“Even last season, Buddy started more than half of the season, and when he didn’t start, he played a huge role for us coming off the bench and being a dynamic 20-point-a-night scorer,” Walton said. “Every decision is always based on what I feel is best for the group and best for the team, and with this training camp, this is part of what we have to see. What do we have? What groups are playing well together? Who complements who? And at the end of the day, every decision that gets made will come down to what I feel as the head coach is best for this team and giving us the best chance of winning.”
Hield responded to Walton’s statement by saying he’s ready to earn a starting role and will do anything the coaching staff asks of him.
“I always love competing and it doesn’t matter,” Hield said. “That’s not my job. I don’t control that. The head coach controls that. They brought me here to play basketball and win basketball games, so whatever they need me for, I’m going to do it and try to compete at the highest (level) I can.”
I read that Knicks really like Hield and Kings want draft picks
Knicks would like to offer 3 draft pick like players
For Hield
Smith Jr
Frank N
Knox
No one wants anyone from the Knicks sorry.
Ehh, I think Robinson, Toppin, Quickley, and Barrett probably hasn’t been too damaged just yet…lol
Smith and Frank are two of the absolute worst players in the league and Knox is not far behind. You have proposed a ludicrously bad deal for the Kings.
smith man…. had high hopes for him….
It may be the best offer the Kings would get. Who knows, maybe those three players just need to escape the Knicks.
If that is the best offer the Kings get then they had better keep him because he is worth way more than all three of those guys put together. And I say this as a Knicks fan, not as a hater. Also the Knicks are DSJ’s second team so I doubt changing the scenery would do much to improve his horrible game. It’s unfortunate, but the three of them are not good players. Maybe Thibs can squeeze something out of them but I doubt it.
On top of that Hield’s contract appears to be frontloaded (based on my two minutes of research) so his value possibly improves going forward.
DSJ went to worse scenery than before so it’s a poor test to see if new scenery was needed. Also, I misread the initial comment — thought it said a few 1st rounders in addition. Maybe like 2 lottery protected?
I doubt your a Knick fan. And you surely haven’t watched them play. So speaking up means you do it from stories you’ve read. Or talking heads telling you what to believe. Real Knick fans actually watch the games. So we know exactly what’s up. We don’t need anyone telling us. Or read about it. Plus all of us played this game. So we understand it. So I’m tell you and inform you,
First a personal note. You can keep Buddy away
First we (real NYK) don’t want disgruntled players. We don’t like talkers unless you’ve actually done something. Second he is a SG who don’t play D. We don’t appreciate players who don’t play D. And we already have our SG who will be twice the player Buddy is.
Now get your notebook out and take notes. If you actually watched and knew talent. You should know Frank came in as a 19 yr old Euro. Smith came in as a 19 yr old. And Knox came in as the youngest of his draft class. Knicks have had a new coach for every yr they have played in NY. Young guys especially Euro. Don’t do well under the big lights. We expect our lottery picks to have basketballs. So the pressure is on. Throw in the media blitz. The inconsistency of management and mins played. And it’s enough to break an adult let alone a kid. So as a real fan. You have to have scout like knowledge. To really represent your team. Cause believe me we love our team. Knox had a descent rookie yr as did Frank and Smith. All were in the futures gm in all star gm. But then reality sets in. It’s hard to grow when you have different management every yr. And the pressure of expectations. Then have all that over the media and social media. I guess you missed all that. Shows what kind of fan you are. Now Knox and Frank imo have talent. And under Thibs it should show. Cause everyone now knows he is staying. Frank is already a solid defensive player. But I guess you don’t know basketball is a 2way sport. Frank is not cut out for prime time in NY. Neither is Knox or Smith. Smith I believe is gone. They will up his value and move him. He out of the three can’t handle NY. The other two still have a shot imo. I believe all three could go to smaller markets. And do very well, at least rotation players. Dude Knox is 20 yrs old, Frank is 22 yrs old, Smith is 23. Toppin their rookie this yr is as old as Smith (a few months younger). Now these are facts. NY is not for everyone. But especially tough on young talent. With high expectations. You say you’re a fan, even a basketball fan. You should want to know why a talent underperforms. Instead of bashing them because someone told you they did. You understand that players used to come out as seniors, graduates from college. All 22-23 yrs old. And still some would need 2-3 yrs to really blossom. Now they come out at 19-20 and we want to judge the failures at 22-23. Real fans don’t look for the worst in players. We look at we can build up. Cause a 19-22 yr old has only one path. That is up and to get better. Most Men don’t grow into their real physical body till 24. Open your eyes man. Understand the whole game.

Counterpoint: Buddy Hield is still worth more than DSJ, Frank, and Knox put together.
Another counterpoint…you only need to post a ridiculously long rant once. We got it the first time…your butt was hurt. By the third time we just assume you enjoy the beating.
I wrote and (i) in shot. I tried to change it. But when I posted it it wouldn’t accept it. I hit it a few times. Hour later it took it all. My bad.
Now to answer your take. I guess you don’t read well. Cause the explanation deserves the length to explain it to, ones who rant like you. Without ever knowing real facts. I’m here to educate you. I could care less what you think. But I don’t accept lies. I can take opinions. There’s a difference
Knickerbocker didnt said dsj, frank, and knox are better than buddy.he said knick has a better sg who will be twice the player buddy is.knick sg is rj barret.and i agree with him.rj will be a better player than buddy hield.so the knick really really dont need buddy hield.knick should build around rj.knox shown a decent rookie season.he was a good shooter in college.fizdale made a huge damage to him.dsj and frank not a terrible player but not a starter calibre too.but they will be a decent bench player. Toppin not my favorite in this draft class.but he is a good player in college.randle must go.he is hogball.
Disclosure: I’m a Knicks fan. Lifelong.
Where I take issue with Al’s triple-posted rant is that, by his standards, if Anthony Bennett played for the Knicks we should all be giving him another 2-3 years to develop.
ALL bad teams have culture and coach issues that can derail a young players development.
Saying DSJ (who I’m a big fan of), Frank, and Knox are subpar prospects at this point isn’t the talking point regurgitation Al claims – it’s a fact.
And my point had nothing to do w/ RJ. Just that Buddy was unattainable is the offer was the above 3.
Other than that what do you think
Honestly Walton is not a bad coach. In fact hes a pretty good one.
LeBum is just a crybaby who needed another star to win anything with.
Yeah, that’s all he is. Right.
Kind of like jordan needed pippen.. bird needed mchale and parish, magic need Kareem and worthy.. Kobe led the lakers to the promised land without pau and shaq. Oh right he didn’t.. steph curry killed it without klay and draymond and even Kd.. oh he didn’t.. Tim Duncan had David Robinson and even tony parker and ginobli.. Hakeem had Clyde drexler.. see the pattern.. superstars need a star to win..
Exactly. How often does a team with only one star win a championship? Prior to the Raptors/Kawhi, maybe Mavs/Dirk (Kidd was 37 at that point and not what I’d consider a star)?
It’s just the way the league works now. You typically need multiple stars to win.
Kawhi had ibaka, Kyle Lowry. Siakem gasol, van fleet, Danny green.. raptors were pretty stacked.. I think dirk is the only one that did it on his own.. Caron Butler and jason terry were the 2nd and 3rd scores on that team
04 pistons were the greatest team of all time. Won it all without a star.
Dirk in 2011
Hakeem in 1994
Probably Duncan in 2003 (Robinson was pretty much washed and Tony and Manu weren’t Tony and Manu yet)
Only those come to mind.
Pippen was not a star, Jordan helped make him into a star.
How many finals did Jordan make without Pippen and Phil? Zero
Phil and Pippen went to the Conference Finals and almost made it to the the Finals without Jordan. Jordan is still the best, but he certainly did not do it alone.
At least the Cavs only had to pay $175M for their one championship.
But the Lakers will be paying LeBron close to $200M to have him there for 5 years and got lucky in year 2. Now he will be there in the twilight of his career, 2020-2023, as the team gets worse and worse before AD gets to opt out in 2024.
How much have the Rockets shelled out in recent years for their zero championships?
Lebron makes more money for lakers than lakers pay him.. that’s how it works with true superstars.. don’t know too many people paying to see 6 step step back harden.. difference with lebron, he wins rings.. harden has had Kd, Westbrook and ibaka in okc Paul, Dwight Howard Westbrook and still 0 rings.. he just is a loser.. now he wants to join kyrie and Kd..
How did he get lucky? He doesn’t just roll the dice and happens to ends up an NBA champion. He had the stat line of 25-8-10 and led the league in assists, at 35yo, as a SF, with only one other solid player on the team. That’s not luck, that’s called dominance.
Also, even if his production dips by 1/4 from last year and the same the year after, he still has Davis and Schroeder near their highest potential and the only thing he has to worry about is injuries. They’ll be in or close to the finals throughout his contract.
Well said. Lebron had the league on his shoulders right out of high school and has shouldered that burden quite well, in my opinion. I wasn’t a fan of him with Miami, but I think he has done well overall, with a ton of pressure. He is a unique individual, given the time he has been in the spotlight.
You always pick the wrong guy to smack down. Bron not only won for them. He brought a culture. He brought prominence and excellence to the organization. He increased the value of the Franchise by twice what he made. Unlike Harden and Mello who just take take take. There are stars who are worth it and more. Why hate on them. Someone got the money to pay. No one is forced to pay.
Should trade Buddy Heild for DeMare DeRozan.
Spurs ideally probably want someone young ish in return for DeRozan who will leave in FA end of the season. Heilds shooting touch is a huge need for the Spurs and his ability to score in bunches would be a huge help. Whereas Sacramento could do with DeRozan as a former all star vet and when his deal expires they would have money to spend in free agency. DeRozan would be a good leader for Fox and Haliburton whereas Heilds shooting would pair well with White or Murray at the Spurs.
Sac already lost Bogdan, they need guys that can shoot and spread the floor, they dont need the King of midrange jumpers, DeRozan
I mean they aren’t going to make the playoffs anyway atleast DeRozan and Fox could try carry them. It gets them out of Heilds huge deal for a 1 year deal of a solid player
San Antonio would prob want picks or younger dudes than Buddy for Demar
Not sure how that helps Sac either… Derozan doesnt put them in the playoffs and prob leaves after this year to ring chase at a discount so Sac is essentially giving uo Buddy for nothing
Giving up Buddy for a slightly better chance at the playoffs, to be a good leader and help develop the younger dudes.
Buddy’s deal is terrible anyways and when DeRozan leaves you’ve frees up 20+ mil space to use in a loaded FA class.
For the Spurs, Heild is younger than DeRozan and his elite shooting will help the Spurs a lot who don’t have many shooters. Imagine Dejounte Murray at the 1, Heild the 2 so you have Murray’s defence and passing with Heilds shooting. That’s nice and then White and Walker off the bench you’ll have good guard combos all game for your forwards and bigs to work with.
It’s not like the Spurs would get anyone younger or better than Heild for DeRozan and no one is giving up picks for a rental like him.
I’d then suggest the Spurs flipped LaMarcus Aldridge for Juilius Randle.
Spurs get a younger PF that puts up good numbers and who will hit FA and you can probably re sign him for cheaper. Aldridge gives the Knicks a solid star vet for young Toppin and Robinson to learn from.
Buddy should start. He’ll be fine now that Bogdan is gone. Luke just isn’t much of a coach unfortunately. All hype…zero results.
Haliburton ist the future. Hield is the sixth man
Not bad moves by Hield, honestly. Be a malcontent, drive your value down, get traded to a contender, and out of a bad situation like Sac. It’s worked for many players. Jimmy Butler and Eric Bledsoe in 2018 and 2017 respectively.
My Guess is, Walton’s Leash isn’t that long, and if they get off to a bad start like they did last year, my guess is, McNair will cut him loose and put Alvin Gentry in as Coach for the Rest of the season.
Maybe have you right. But Walton has last season hasn’t bad job. Fox, Bagley, Holmes aren’t injured.
And we’re hasn’t a terrible start with 0-5.
I I give him a fair chance
Buddy: “I love everybody in this organization and my relationships with people here are fine.”
Also Buddy: “The team isn’t valuing me right and I want to play where I’m appreciated.”
Which is it Buddy? Both statements can’t be perfectly true…
Our GM wants flexibility. Bogdan can’t defend. Haliburton is the future on SG. Hield and Barnes should be traded because extremely overpaid. We need 2 way players. Fox is one. Haliburton can become one. Bagley … I hope so much. It will be exciting. It will definitely be better than Vlade
“There’s nothing to be worked on”. Except for his butchering of the English language.
And I thought I was the only one who can’t understand this clown, when he talks.
Yes he was born in the Bahamas, but still …….
Does he have any regrets about not being able to speak properly? My guess is that he don’t no not nothing about speaking. He belongs with in Sacramento.
Belongs with, I say!
This clown is a headache now and down the road ……… like Boogie, you can see the writing on the wall this early.
Trade this clown asap.
Anyone who is a true Knick and basketball fan that watches the gameas knows the Knicks have valuable pieces that need to be kept together. A lot of teams/fans recognize that they want to try and steal Knicks youthful players on the cheap thinking their management isn’t smart to realize for example that Frank Ntlikina is a breakout player in the making. He’s essentially Gary Payton in the making if you want to go back that far. Not every PG has to be Steph Curry. A lot of guys typically around year 3-4 have significant jump due to their bodies catching up to their basketball IQ. We had literally the youngest roster in the league last 2 seasons. I’d take my chances with these guys playing together as the next set of contenders by next season.
The only player under 25 that I can see not making it is Dennis Smith Jr only because at his best he’s probably a 6th man type rotation player and I find Quickley to be better suited to it that DSJr because of his shooting. I could put together a longer rant than this but I’ll just keep it high level for now.
Outsiders who don’t know will always hate. We got the glamor, numbers, history, and teams. They don’t get the truest and realest fans are in NY. We love the game as much as our teams.
What I don’t get about Kings. They dogged Buddy. Then he speaks up. The team changes management. Still don’t seem him and Walton are on same page. They let the better Nate for Fox walk. Who would have cost less money, less drama. Walk for nothing at that. Now it’s what are we going to do with Buddy. That’s incompetence. And we Knick fans know incompetence lols. IMO it’s best to move him. Play him build his value. He is still a young good player. And get what you can for him. Halliburton can hold down the guard, great pick. But he is more a true PG. Considering Fox is more a scoring PG, it could work. Kings can get value for Buddy. I just don’t think he fits with Knicks. We are rebuilding not just seeing what fits
Mate for Fox
Head-cases like Buddy, Boogie, Rasheed, Rodman, etc they tend to fall in line, when they’re sent to strong organizations, with veteran leadership, from players to coach.
Though Buddy will be a nice talent for the KNICKS, it’s a crap-shoot as this point as the roster is relatively young, with no alpha-talent to put people in line.
Say it without crying…
I knew a starboy years ago …….. he was living in his mama’s basement, eating meat-loaf all day long.
It is easy. The plan called for a 3-D player like Vassel in the draft. Plus a Hield Trade and Bogi as a fit for Fox. Now we have Haliburton at our feet. One who can play alongside Fox. Then we have 3 SG with Igm, Bogi and Hield. And paying Bogi 72 million without defense is risky. So you gave him up. Hield should now increase its market value which is possible. He and Barnes just need customers to drive the rubuild forward
Nuggets or grizz should trade for Buddy, maybe even the spurs..
“I love everybody here in this franchise and this organization, so I don’t regret nothing I said. ”
That’s putting love to nasty purposes, but his grammar suggests he can’t tell one thing from another anyway.
Sacto/Divac should not have felt forced to offer when they did, now they’re stuck with him as long as the new FO thinks they must get full value for him.
