The Jazz have waived guard Trevon Bluiett and three undrafted rookies — center Romaro Gill, forward Tre Scott and guard Jake Toolson — according to a team press release.
Utah needed to make room on its 20-man roster for two new additions, guard Yogi Ferrell and forward Malcolm Miller.
Some or all of the players let go on Friday could wind up with the Jazz’s G League club in Salt Lake City if they clear waivers.
Bluiett appeared in 41 games with the Salt Lake City Stars last season, averaging 14.9 PPG, 3.4 RPG and 2.5 APG in 29.3 MPG.
Gill, an undrafted rookie out of Seton Hall, posted averages of 7.8 PPG, 5.6 RPG and 3.2 BPG in 30 games last season.
Scott was a four-year player at Cincinnati and averaged 11.4 PPG and 10.5 RPG in 33.7 MPG for the Bearcats last season.
Toolson spent two seasons at BYU before transferring to Utah Valley and then back to BYU last season. He averaged 15.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 3.9 APG as a senior.
It’s kind of wild that Trevon Bluiett was waived because the Jazz signed his former high school teammate Yogi Ferrell!
From the outside, it would seem the Jazz are all over the place. However, after seeing how dominant their 3 game is as a team, they seem to be going all in on 3 and D. Malcolm Miller not only fits that profile but is also very smart. He looks like a mix between Royce and Clarkson, but a bit longer.
The guys they cut, like they said, could very well just be a technicality. They’ll likely play on their G-League team. Each NBA team can have 15 active roster players and 2 two-way players. The rest can be called up anytime to replace someone who gets injured or Covid.
Overall, I’m liking this roster so far. Lots of weapons to go along with much better defense than last year.
Top 4 seed in the West?
No way!
LAL, DEN & DAL will be top 4 that is for sure…
Then you have LAC, POR…
Then you have the rat race for the rest of playoffs teams, like NOP, MEM, MIN, UTA, GSW, PHO…
HOU is the wildcard, don’t know about them until they do the decent thing & respect Harden by trading him, then we will see what they get for him & where they are…
SAS, OKC & SAC are the only teams without any option to the post season.
Dallas can’t seem to stay healthy. Plus, they lose more than they should. They remind of Portland. They have the talent but can’t seem to win like everyone expects them to.
Grouping Utah in with that lesser group shows you don’t follow the Jazz at all, or probably any of those teams.
For example, NOP & PHO have worse teams than they did last year.
PHO put on a nice run in the bubble but lost some key pieces, especially on defense that helped them do that. Paul is a better player than Rubio, but Rubio was better for that team.
NOP lost two of their best defenders in Holiday and Favors. Holiday was the heart of that team. Without him the perimeter is much more wide open.
MEM can be good, but they’re too inconsistent still. Minnesota has the same problem, but they did add some talent. They still need more defenders, though.
GSW added some talent but without Klay’s 2-way play they’re going to struggle against certain teams.
UTA added more weapons (both from injury & new players) than they did last year. Plus, they addressed their perimeter defense and backup Center. Their bench is much better than last year. Preseason is an inaccurate assessment, but they have been blowing out every team so far, including the Clippers with their starting 5 through the first three quarters.
Bluiett is that french? Maybe Turkish
Jazz still lacks wing depth… Especially a allstar caliber wing…
It’s all about wings in today’s NBA. I agree. By the way this is one reason I think Portland will step up this season. They finally after all these years of great guards and good centers have a few wings to rely on. Watch out for Portland.
They brought in some young talent that I can see really panning out. Malcolm Miller seems like he’d be another one of those types.
Currently, they waived him and Yogi, but speculation is that now they can play for their G-League team. If so, then they’re leaving roster spots open so they can bring players back and forth all year. Never know what will happen with Covid. I can see the teams with the most depth will fare much better.
Definitely Portland got better. For years I was like “Why won’t they improve on the wings”? Blazers are still one player away,as for the jazz…if I’m them I trade Conley and picks for Derozen… They can sign a young point guard for cheap…
I’ve always liked Derozen. I actually know his sister. Maybe I’ll have her suggest that to him? I always tell her that the Jazz would love to have him on their team. =)
But seriously, the Jazz have been really good this preseason on 3-pointers. Conley has fit that uptempo, more 3-pointers style so far. Derozen doesn’t shoot 3’s, but could still push tempo by taking an extra dribble inside the arc. His 2PFG% would help keep those points from being lost. He’s also a bit more aggressive and bigger. Could be a win-win. Just don’t see the Spurs needing Conley at this point.
