The Lakers already like what they see from their new point guard and want to lock him up long-term.
They have begun discussions with point guard Dennis Schröder on a contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Schroder, who is making $16MM this season, will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer if he doesn’t sign an extension.
However, Schröder has a major incentive to wait until after mid-February to finalize an extension and that’s when discussions are expected to pick up again, Wojnarowski adds.
This isn’t the first time the Lakers have engaged Schröder’s representative, Alex Saratsis, regarding an extension. Schröder turned down an initial offer for an additional two years and $33.4MM, the maximum allowable offer the Lakers could make prior to February 16. That’s because Schröder was traded by the Thunder during the offseason, making him only eligible for a two-year extension with a five percent raise in salary.
He could be extended for four years and as much as $83MM after February 16, up to the time he’d become a free agent.
Schröder had 14 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds in the team’s opener against the Clippers.
Even if an extension agreement isn’t reached during the season, the Lakers hold Schröder’s Bird Rights and he can thus go over the salary cap to re-sign him during the 2021 offseason.
In the deal with OKC, the Lakers gave up Danny Green and the draft rights to No. 28 pick Jaden McDaniels, who was flipped to Minnesota in a separate trade.
Do they really see this dude as a LT solution? Idk that I’d give him 4/83. Maybe 3/48.
I don’t know I agree it seems a bit steep but I love Schroder. He is skilled and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He could play for any team, but agree maybe not at that price.
No way he resigns at 16mm/yr. 3/60 would be closer.
I’d pay Schroder.
He impressed in his first game, worked well with Bron and AD. He’s a great on ball defender, great iso scorer and playmaker and he’s proven over multiple seasons he’s going to be good.
I’d Luke Kennard is getting 4-75 then Schroder is definitely worth 4/80
Lakers 6 players salary $125 million next season
LeBron
Davis
Schroeder
KCP
Kuzma
Deng
Lakers need to have 35 million cap room to sign Kawhi
They need to trade away $65 million salary to sign Kawhi
It’s pretty clear Kawhi won’t play with Lebron. After everything he did to get he and PG to the clips, getting the coach he wanted, and the new balance ad, I’d say its very VERY unlikely he leaves the Clippers. Even more unlikely that he’d ever play with Bron.
Easy solution. Don’t sign Kawhi bc they won’t be able to anyway.
Why would they need to sign Kawhi? They just won a championship without him and are, on paper, even better than last year. Obviously it would be great for them to sign him, but they’d have to do an insane amount of maneuvering to do it. Don’t see it happening.
Schroeder is 30% upgrade over Danny Green
Horford for Danny Green is 20% downgrade and save $5.2 million this season
Current Danny Green is huge overrated by reporters
After seeing these rookie scale extensions this past week, I don’t see why he wouldn’t be worth that 4 year number.
I agree but worth and get are different. Just because u get it doesn’t mean your worth it.
Very true. Get is more appropriate.
Rookies get paid on upside. If you are a top pick and show promise. They will sign you most times to a good second contract. It’s why Kennard got signed. I’d say he’s a good comparison. Teams also sign you on what you bring to them. What your worth is to them. I’d say Schroeder is showing his worth to team. They got time to check him out good. He made a good decision on waiting to sign.
Lakers look good offensively. Mavs not a good D team though. Against the Clippers they showed their D is not what it was. Still I will wait 20 gms or so to see how teams are rounding out.
I am sure LJ finds slippery Shroder an improvement over anxious Avery. Shroder stays upright and aware while always moving, while Bradley puts his head down and gets immersed in a smaller personal contests. Shroder being German is unlikely to feel intimidated by LJ; in that sense he is a Danny Green replacement, but younger and a PG, opening room for KCP.
I saw Gasol making fantastic picks, anticipating the action and just getting in opponents’ way at key points, even twice in a possession, like it was the play all along. But I doubt he needs it called.
The Lakers may have achieved the goal of mild improvement.
Not what certain Laker fans were talking about, but not the talent setback that was possible.
The first 2 games have been fun to watch. Schroder is like a Rondo/Green combo, so that is a huge win and I say the resign him at 4/$80m.
Big energy from Dwight and McGee is the only thing I see as a possible downgrade – so far. Gasol isn’t quick but he is effective. Montrez has been a beast though, so it’s a wash.
I like Harrell’s slashing ability on a team that can pass. It should work out. Even coming away from the rim, or in drawing fouls. The best thing Howard did was scuffle!
