The Nets and center Jarrett Allen were unable to reach a rookie scale contract extension, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports tweets. Allen will thus become a restricted free agent at the end of this season.
Allen’s qualifying offer next offseason, which would allow the Nets to match any offer sheet, is $5,661,538.
Allen, who will make approximately $3.9MM this season, has established himself as one of the top young centers in the league. He has started regularly the past two seasons after being a part-time starter as a rookie.
Last season, he averaged 11.1 PPG, 9.6 RPG and 1.3 BPG in 70 regular-season games, including 64 starts.
The Nets are projected to be a taxpaying team this season and next year and added to the payroll this offseason by re-signing Joe Harris to a four-year contract. They also picked up their option for the 2021/22 season on young guard Landry Shamet. Giving Allen an extension would have significantly increased their tax bill for next season.
Allen would be an attractive trade piece if Brooklyn went in that direction as part of a package for another superstar such as James Harden.
It’s too bad they couldn’t extend him now. I think Joe Tsai can afford the tax bill, especially if it’ll bring a ring with it.
But signing him to an extension has nothing to do with getting a ring this year though.
Maybe. Maybe Allen has a great season, but gets injured in the last month and decides to sit out the playoffs so he doesn’t hurt his value on the market.
Nets are doing allen dirty. He is literally one of the best new age bigs. Its unfortunate, He went from playing for a team that had a culture to now playing with prima Donnas.
100%
Exactly and they cater to those divas by giving some of his minutes to an older deandre….Allen’s stats could be way better
Exactly, it was so pathetic when I saw DJ crying to the media that he wasn’t starting. Dude all your good at is catching lobs. Be happy that you’re getting paid 10 mil and be a mentor.
Feel bad for Allen, he sees Jordan come in and take some of his minutes, he sees bench guy Joe Harris get 20mil, even T. Prince got a bag but not him.
I don’t think he’s going to have an amazing amazing season like Ingram and get the max so it’ll be interesting to see how much teams think he’s worth and how much the Nets value him in return.
Can the Hornets paying lots for a young centre to go with their young core.
However I think the Spurs might jump in and steal him. Considering they have Aldridge and DeRozan going off contract and look to be going younger. Allen seems like a Pop player cause he’s smart, plays defence and Pop values a traditional centre. They also have a good young core with Murray Walker White Johnson and so on. They should also have a good pick this year.
Hornets would be so perfect for him. He will be able to create action, catch lobs from ball/Graham and they will let him expand his Range.
I dont feel bad for him at all. That’s how the game works. Would you feel bad for DeAndre jordan if he got shelved just Coz hes a little older? What about the games where Allen is still figuring it out. Kd, kyrie, no player with championship intentions is gonna have that patience. Hes young, it will come. Like the idea of him going to the spurs…his time will come
I like how Lefty capitalized the R in Range. Allen would be much more valuable if he could shoot longRange.
The Spurs already have Poeltl and need better stars than LMA & DDR.
Hard extension, perhaps. He was likely asking for a lot. His backup status wasn’t really on the merits. Doubt they let him leave if he continues to play like he has.
His Afro did,however,reach an extension.
Ridiculous that the Nets continue to start and prioritize DJ over Jarrett Allen, merely to appease KD and Kyrie.
Jarrett Allen is a way better player than DJ, not to mention younger and still developing.
I think the whole summer of KD and Krazy Kyrie comes back to haunt the Nets in the near future
DJ is a proven commodity. Allen is still young. I’m sure hell get minutes as they load manage, and hell get a big offer next year. Sometimes you dont always get what you want exactly when you want it.
The only thing DJ has proven is that he is an aging, basically washed up big, in an age where bigs like DJ are no longer needed as they once were.
DJ’s game has always relied on extreme athleticism, something that has been declining for him for some time now. Jarrett Allen is the far superior player at this point, not just the younger player.
My point is that Jarrett Allen should be and deserves to be starting, not DJ. The Nets are starting DJ to appease KD and Kyrie, not for basketball reasons.
Bas.Ref. says Allen started almost every game, which I would not have guessed (either).
You didn’t say anything that Allen does better. I don’t see anything either in limited views. Jordan is probably more intimidating. Allen could get paid if he could expand anything.
Their stats are nearly equal but Allen’s on/off is better by 4 points.
At least he’s being saved for more important minutes!
If the nets lose Allen but keep Prince, they messed up, if they haven’t already.
