Rookie Warriors center James Wiseman has quickly emerged as a big contributor for Golden State and an early top Rookie of the Year contender, as Tim Kawakami of The Athletic details.
Though Golden State has had an up-and-down 2-2 start, Kawakami argues that the 19-year-old No. 2 draft pick out of Memphis clearly has established himself as the most intriguing prospect among the Warriors’ young guys. “I told y’all after Day 1 that I think he’s going to be really special,” power forward Draymond Green said of Wiseman. “I had never seen James play much and so to see his skill set is, ‘Wow, it’s nice.’”
There’s more out of the Pacific Division:
- New Suns center Frank Kaminsky was excited to play well against the Kings, the team that had just cut him, Suns writer Gina Mizell tweets. “I gotta be honest, that felt good,” Kaminsky said. He scored 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench for Phoenix on Sunday.
- After the Lakers had their first All-Star player absence, their deep roster showed its mettle in a 127-91 Anthony Davis-free route of the Timberwolves Sunday, according to Bill Oram of The Athletic. “The expectation and the norm for us, for most of the league, is that there will be guys out,” head coach Frank Vogel noted. “We just have to make sure we understand that’s the norm and don’t let it slow us down at all.” Kyle Kuzma, Marc Gasol, Montrezl Harrell, Dennis Schroder and Talen Horton-Tucker all scored in double digits, along with Los Angeles’s remaining healthy All-Star, LeBron James.
- Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has said that he is optimistic that power forward Draymond Green will appear in his first 2020/21 season game in the club’s first home game on Friday, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link).
Wiseman for ROY
Things look rosy when he is shooting 83% from distance. Yet it’s a small 5/6 sample, so there’s no reason to think he will become a legendary shooter, is there? He’s physically gifted, but I’ll wait to judge his worthiness for awards until the league has had a close look and adjusts to him. ROY aren’t best crowned in the first week, but Wiseman is certainly a gifted athlete.
Oh, c’mon…let Warriors fans be Warriors fans while it lasts…
Halliburton gonna be roy. But isn’t gonna be the biggest star outta this draft. That’ll be wiseman or Melo
I put money on Haliburton. So I hope you’re right.
Probably a nice payout on that bet. His odds couldn’t have been that good
“ROY aren’t best crowned in the first week.”
but people *do* crown who is going to win the nba championship in the first week. ;)
People have all kinds of wishful thoughts…
I get it you hate Warriors fans, but seriously, Wiseman has objectively been one of the best rookies this year, along with Haliburton. Wiseman’s presence at 19 is exactly like Lebron’s was at 19. The fact that the Warriors are coached by an idiot should not reflect on him.
Just compare Wiseman with Jordan Poole if you want to see the difference between a hit and a miss on a first rounder. That’s what Warriors fans are excited about, they have had to cringe through Poole, so when a legit star rookie shows up, it gets elevated.
The difference between Wiseman and Poole is 26 picks, so one would expect a significant disparity in talent level. How about we wait longer than FOUR games to nominate ROY and compare players to Lebron. Care to explain how Steve Kerr is an “idiot?”
@chief two hands you claimed Lakers were a dynasty after winning a half championship. They don’t look so dominant so far this season. Same record as the warriors. So you are right about wishful thoughts.
Idk why some “analysts” and draft gurus had Wiseman falling in the draft past either the #1 or #2 spot.
Wiseman is a special talent, and has been my pick for ROY, based off his opportunity, exposure, and of course his tremendous talent. James Wiseman can do it all, but he will fit this Warriors team PERFECTLY, especially when they’re fully healthy!!
He can pick n pop with either Curry, Thompson, or even Draymond, he’s an excellent lane runner for the fast break, hes an excellent rebounder and rim protector…Plus, the kid has a great stroke from 3-point range and mid range, not to mention, hes also got some post-up moves in his bag of tricks as well…
Wiseman is only going to get better and better the more he fills out, and the more experience he gets individually and with his teammates..
Warriors got them an absolute stud, and when Klay comes back next season, the Warriors are going to be giving LeBron and AD and Kawhi and PG a real run for the title..!!
Klay with matchup with LeBron, Wiseman will matchup with AD, Draymond will matchup with Montrez, but then you mean to tell me Schroeder is going to matchup with Curry?? Ehhh, I dont think so…lol
Obviously though, starting lineups arent the only factor in winning championships..What made the previous Warriors team so hard to beat was their depth on their bench as well as their starting lineup…
We will see which team is able to assemble the best groups around their cores, but thays going to be a really fun matchup to watch next season!!
I think we’ve figured out Wiseman is good. You are predicting GSW will be third in the WC.
At this stage I’ll take that. I’ll take third. Heck I’ll take 6th LOL.
Lol you think anyone can match up with Ad and lebron but then you’re so quick to dismiss matching up with Stephanie curry? Come on now, you can’t have your cake and eat it too
To many laker fans are claiming a championship but must not be watching the NBA games. So far the first week no team looks to be the top team in the NBA. To many good teams and it will be a dog fight. Yes there are some teams that can match up with the Lakers and beat them. The Bucks and Nets could easily beat the Lakers.
Really? I want to smoke whatever you’re smoking?
in da east u got 76ers being da best
Wiseman has played 3 college games and didnt even practice with the Warriors until games started. He has 6 total practices so far.
Analysts were confused by him because you cant use a 3 game sample to decide anything about any player.
ROY???? Who cares about that meaningless award. The issue is which rookie has the most skills/potential for true greatness. Anyone who can’t see that that is obviously Wiseman doesn’t know B-ball. *Curry and Harden were beaten out by Tyreke Evans for ROY.
Curry was coached by someone who legitimately thought Monta Ellis was the superior player, and Harden averaged 22 minutes a game in his rookie year. You are right, ROY is entirely dependent on the coach correctly recognizing talent, and not playing mediocre players ahead of them. Many NBA coaches fail at this. Kerr is failing at it right now.
You shouldn’t blame Kerr most NBA coaches lay their rookies on limited minutes at first. Anyone watching the warriors games can see Wiseman is a special player and future all star. The biggest surprise is his outside shot. He has a great looking shot and can hit 3s from any where. the warriors will build their team around Wiseman who will be a top 10 player in the NBA this decade.
Marty is a crazy Cali homer. Many have seen Wiseman. Flaws are apparent. He is not Lebron. Kerr created a champion-winning offense. Wiseman is a raw rookie with great potential to affect outcomes. Marty is a bore.
It would be unfair to compare Wiseman to LeBron. The kid is only 19 y o and is just beginning his career. A better comparison would be to AD potential. He has all of the qualities you want in a big center. He just needs time to learn the game. Example last night he got 2 quick fouls and Kerr talked to him. He stop jumping at shots and let his wingspan get the blocks.
Dubs should play Wiseman more minutes… Looney is garbage…
“Coach” Kerr doing absolutely nothing to help the team win, as usual.
Gotta love how he’s committed to benching Curry in the first 6 minutes of the last quarter no matter the score – great coaching!!!
yea ikr without wisemen da warriors are gunna get destroyed on da boards since im pretyy sure looney fotgot how tro rebound or something. wouldn’t playing at point guard be a better fit for looney lol?
Funniest thing about GSW this year is how Wiggins actually is Michael Jordan reincarnated, physically – but mentally he has about 25% of MJ’s basketball IQ.
He really is Maple Jordan, but he looks frustratingly out of sorts half the time. Thing is, all along he can do all the same moves as MJ could, he just is not in the right place to do them. Draymond is going to scare him into playing better though.
Yeah, Wiggin does all the same moves as Jordan in his driveway.
One too many likes for another cocaine post. Meant to hit reply.
“I told y’all after Day 1 that I think X’s going to be really special”, said Draymond Green. Here “X” is any big man who ends up with the Dubs (Jordan Bell, Marquese Chris… make your pick).
Wiseman looks like he’s always looked. Like a big man with skills. He doesn’t need to shoot. But it’s nice that he can. He’s better around the rim. Also runs the pick n roll well. Warriors need him to rebound. Protect the paint first. He is becoming bigger part of offense. Cause he can score, that simple. He’s getting his points inflow of offense. Not forcing it really. He needs to be steady and consistent. He’s got potential to be a great 2way player. And for a center that means greatness. I didn’t think he’d get this many mins this soon. Thought they would go easy with him. He’s definitely looking like ROY so far. You can’t teach size. A center with skills and athleticism. Is a rare thing and has a big future. Also he seems like an intellect. So you add big IQ player. Means special player. I’ll never understand how scouts could not see. At least a solid 2way center in Wiseman.
