The Raptors are among the teams rumored to be interested in acquiring James Harden, but Michael Grange of Sportsnet believes DeMar DeRozan might be a better fit. DeRozan, a franchise cornerstone in Toronto for nine seasons, scored 27 points Saturday night to help the Spurs defeat his former team.
“I think throughout the years I’ve known him, played with him, played against him in the last couple, I think he just continues (to grow),” said Raptors guard Kyle Lowry. “… He’s become more of a playmaker, and I think that’s his strength right now, is still being able to score but he’s able to play make for everybody else and make life easier for the other guys, like role players, and getting guys the ball where they need it and getting them open looks and giving them confidence to be good.”
All that sounds perfect for Toronto, according to Grange, who states that the team could use another multi-talented offensive threat. DeRozan is making $27.7MM in the final year of his contract, Grange adds, so the Raptors may target him in free agency if they don’t want to give up part of their young core in a trade.
There’s more on the Raptors:
- Fred VanVleet has evolved into a leadership role, according to Doug Smith of The Toronto Star. VanVleet is ready for that responsibility after inking a four-year, $85MM deal over the offseason that ensures his long-term future with the team. “I’ve been in this position for a long time now, since I was a little kid, and there were times I wasn’t so good at it and times I’ve been great,” he said. “I just try to manage that every day and just try to help guys reach their full potential.”
- Everything was going well for the Raptors in March, but they haven’t been the same team since the league went on hiatus, Smith observes in a separate story. Pascal Siakam in particular looked like a different player during the restart in Orlando. “It was weird watching myself,” he said. “When I watched the game, one of the things I really pointed out was just that I didn’t recognize myself in terms of having fun. I’m always someone that has fun playing the game. I love this game, and I don’t ever want to play the game without any joy.”
- The Raptors have reached a deal to have some of their games televised locally in their temporary home of Tampa, Florida, writes Eduardo A. Encina of The Tampa Bay Times. The Magic own territorial rights to the area.
Michael Grange must be punch-drunk on nostalgia after a single game reminded him of a much more younger, championship-less Raptors team from years bygone.
The NY Post is throwing praise on Alex Burks for scoring 20 points and the Toronto press is calling for a return of Derozan — lets get some of these beat writers in GM roles asap
Must be said that DeRozan has just had his best 2 seasons of his career in SAS… so TOR fans must be gutted. I do know they got a ring, but I am a guy that I rather have an All-Star lifer in my team, than a mercenary who didn’t wanna be in the team, even if very luckily got a ring for it, just my opinion, take it or leave it, but DeRozan is a class act!
Toronto fans are definitely not gutted my friend trust me lmao. We got a chip
We seen Demar fail in the playoffs for many years with us. If anything I think the consensus is we’re happy for him.
I am sorry for you my friend!
Why
You only seem to care about winning, which I suppose seems to be fine for you, as I don’t follow any team but I follow the players I like winning doesn’t interest me at all, so I can enjoy all sorts of players in all sorts of situations without caring if they are in a winning or losing situation.
I find fans that follow a particular team seem to have a much narrower field of vision, no offense intended, but I like guys like DeMar & I was truly annoyed when TOR traded him.
I know fans, for some odd reason, believe he flops in the playoffs… but funnily enough his numbers are better in the playoffs than in the RS.
I like loyalty & players that have like a love affair with a team, mercenaries like Kawhi ain’t something I do like or appreciate.
Anyway my point of view, I respect yours, hopefully you can do the same for me.
Let’s just agree to disagree my friend!
You’re saying you don’t like winning? Weird flex but ok buddy haha.
Yes everyone knows “his numbers were better in the playoffs” blah blah blah watch the damn games
If you don’t like winning then sports isn’t for you because that is the whole point of sports. DeMar got traded because the dynamic needed to change. He wasn’t getting the job done. And guess what, it worked. So if that annoys you then too bad. And to say you like loyalty and players that have a love affair with a team- if that’s the case, you like DeMar’s game, need to evolve. Those days are long passed. Players who play out their entire career with one franchise are about as common as that lone championship banner hanging in Toronto
Either return Derozen or pursue Oladipo. Of course the haters always have something negative to say about the raptors, whichever move is realistic…
I’ve liked the idea of DeRozan returning to Toronto, the fit has been there since Kawhi left and Lowry still has love for him.
I think if Lowry takes a discount to resign and they bring back DR, I would watch that reunion tour for a season or two.
Powell,McCaw, Stanley Johnson & a pick for Derozen…
