Hawks guard Kris Dunn is hoping to bring a “dog mentality” with his new team on defense, an area where he’s excelled in his short NBA career, Sarah Spencer of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes.
Dunn signed a two-year, $10MM deal to join Atlanta in free agency. The 26-year-old was one of the better perimeter defenders in the league last season, also averaging 7.3 points, 3.4 assists and 25 minutes per contest. He shot a career-best 44% from the floor in those games, but also a career-worst 26% from deep.
“Just bringing the energy, bringing that dog mentality, basically what I did last year with the Bulls, just bring it over here,” Dunn said of what he plans to bring. “I wouldn’t say ‘teach’ but just bring it over and just bring everybody to a whole new level and a whole new standard, and I think we’ve got a couple great defenders already. I think they just need the motivation and someone out there to also help them and push them to be where they can be.”
In addition to Dunn, the Hawks also signed veteran point guard Rajon Rondo in free agency, pairing the duo with new signings Danilo Gallinari and Bogdan Bogdanovic. The team is clearly eyeing a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs next season after accruing just a 20-47 record last year.
There’s more from the Southeast Division tonight:
- The Magic are eager to see what Chuma Okeke can do this season, but the team is being careful not to put any unnecessary pressure on the 22-year-old, Roy Parry of The Orlando Sentinel writes. Okeke was drafted with the No. 16 pick in 2019 but sat out the entire 2019/20 season to rehab a torn ACL.
- Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald examines how the Heat‘s first practice at American Airlines Arena in nine months went on Sunday. Miami is coming off a run to the NBA Finals, the franchise’s fifth trip in the past decade. The team lost starting forward Jae Crowder in free agency, as well as Derrick Jones Jr. and Solomon Hill, replacing the trio with Precious Achiuwa, Avery Bradley and Maurice Harkless. “I just wanted to use it as a template to really see where guys were, what they were able to retain and how quickly the new players are able to get up to speed with things,” Spoelstra said of the practice.
- Magic center Khem Birch is in the process of developing a corner three-point shot, Josh Cohen of NBA.com writes. “I’ve been working on my game so I can play with Vooch [Nikola Vucevic] this season,” Birch said. “Working on the corner threes, so when he gets the ball in the post he can kick out, and also being more aggressive. When I’m on the court, a lot of teams tend to think I’m not a threat. I feel like playing with Vooch, I have to be more of a threat this season and that’s what I’ve been working on this offseason.”
Rondo and Dunn are solid guards
Gallo Bogdan and Reddish are solid Wings
How about the playing time for Huerter and Hunter?
Dunn is going to get fellow PGs Rondo and Trae to do it like he does?— not their game; maybe he meant wings Reddish and Huerter. I doubt a new veteran like Gallinari or Bogans. Best: Okongwu or maybe Hunter, looking to connect somehow with a perimeter player.
You can make a nice living playing D. Hawks need it more than most. Hawks are deep and young. Now can they play as a team. They will be fun to watch.
Yeah..they are better than my bulls or ur knick.maybe the 8th spot belong to them.
Wizards are better
Dunn Rondo Hunter Okungwu all on the Hawks bench. Other teams will be letting them shoot the three, filling up the passing lanes and paint and their second unit will struggle.
I predict the Wizards will make the playoffs over the Hawks. Russ Beal Bertans Hachimura plus Scotty Brooks that’s going to be better than Trae Young and those guys
Delusional, bro. Young, Bogdonavic, Reddish, Collins, and Capela starting, with Rondo, Huerter, Hunter, Gallinari, and Okongwu off the bench!? With Dunn, Snell, Hill, and Bruno Fernando getting minutes?! Get outta here… best bench in the NBA, and it isn’t close. Washington isn’t close to being better than the Hawks this season.
Best bench hahaha wait and see then when the hawks and wizards are fighting it out for the 8th seed
WAS without Optimus Dime is gone backwards!
BTW also they have forced BB to ask for a trade… the whole team is wrecked!
One must wonder why they would do that?
Specially when future looked not bad!
BTW ATL is sooo much better than WAS that isn’t even an argument or a discussion about that, right?
Houston won that trade, hands down.
WAS is NOT a team the Atlanta Hawks are concerned about, in any way lol. The Hawks aren’t gonna be fighting with anyone for the 8th seed, lol, as they are easily a top 5 team in the East. Top 5 starting lineup, and the single best bench in the NBA.
Atlanta is chaotic. RW can always turn it on if it’s close.
IMO
Westbrook is better than Ben Simmons this season
I knew the difference between Bestbrook and Worstbrook
Beal is healthier than Embiid
Harris is better than Bryant
Wizards get 3 young kids
Rui
Avdija
Bryant
Will have breakout season
76ers 4th best player isn’t good
Sixers have a proven head coach, they have two of the best young players in the league. Simmons is a great defender and one of the leagues best passers. Embiid is the second best centre in the league and one of the best defenders in the league.
Then they have Tobias Harris a great third piece, Danny Green a 2/3 time champion and proven 3 and D player, Seth Curry one of the leagues best shooters and then you have Thybulle Milton Scott Bradley and so on.
Wizards have Russ and he’s nice but we know what’s happening with him and then they have Beal who is good but huge fall off in talent to Bertans Hachimura and others plus their bench is a bunch of young players none that special really.
Simmons defence will make Russ struggle and then when he gets inside Embiid will cover. Beal is harder to stop but we have Green and Thybulle. Whereas Simmons will be to big for Russ, Bryant has no chance stopping Embiid and our bench will out shoot the wizards.
It’s about which team will make playoffs
At first
Do you agree with this?
Westbrook is a better player than Simmons December 2020 to May 2021
sillivan said wizard is better than sixers.thats mean sixers is better than wizard.why?bcoz its sillivan.you know…
@sillyvan… no way, no how, no never, no ever ever ever… Simmons is better than Westbrook, as simple as!
My dogs mentality is to chill on the couch all day.
