UPDATE: The Warriors and Lin were unable to complete their deal since Lin didn’t receive his Letter of Clearance in time.
Free agent point guard Jeremy Lin is finalizing a deal with the Warriors, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, who notes (via Twitter) that Lin will require a FIBA Letter of Clearance from the Chinese Basketball Association in order to officially sign with Golden State.
It sounds like it’ll be a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 deal for Lin, with Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated tweeting that the plan is for the 32-year-old to play for the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s G League affiliate. That means he’ll be waived shortly after signing his contract.
Lin, who made his NBA debut in 2010 with the Warriors, spent time with eight teams in total over the course of nine NBA seasons, enjoying a breakout year with the Knicks in 2011/12 and winning a championship with the Raptors in 2019. He elected to play in China last season and averaged 22.3 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 5.6 APG for the Ducks, earning a CBA All-Star nod.
Lin was a reliable contributor in 51 games with the Hawks in 2018/19, averaging 10.7 PPG and 3.5 APG on .466/.333/.845 shooting. However, after being bought out by Atlanta and signing with the Raptors, he recorded just 7.0 PPG and 2.2 APG on .374/.200/.810 shooting and fell out of Toronto’s rotation for the playoffs.
Lin had recently been practicing in Walnut Creek, California with the G League Ignite, the NBAGL select team made up of top prospects and a handful of veterans.
The Warriors will have to cut a player from their 20-man training camp roster to officially sign Lin.
Poole is looking like a bust for the warriors. He just disappears out there for long stretch at a time. Warriors need a play starter on the second team.
I think Jordan Poole is much improved over last season. He’s going to be fine. Just saying my fingers are crossed and I’m hopeful, but I think he’ll be fine.
Well i mean he was drafted 28th overall. Id say at this point he has already out played the expectations that come with a pick that far down in the draft. I thought he looked fairly decent last year and is better than Lee or ky bowman or jacob evans and probably even quinn cook as well
Just pulled up the 2019 nba draft. Look at all the players drafted between 24-60 and then tell me how many players have played more minutes and/or looked better than poole through 2 years. Trying not to be a homer but id say Eric Paschall is the best out of those 37 players. The only other guys besides paschall and poole that played any sort of minutes i believe were bruno fernando of atlanta and cody martin of charlotte.
Not saying poole is good but hardly a bust. Expectations go way down after 25th overall in the nba draft
i agree. paschall wus da best out of all of them
Linsanity 2.0
Wow he’s back in the league
So mans won’t even be on the actual warriors roster, but only the G league roster???? Wow!
It’s a great move for the player and the team. Someone goes down he’s ready to jump in the car and drive to San Francisco.
Exhibit 10 contracts are actually pretty respectable considering NBA teams can only carry 15 players each and have a distinct set of needs.
Id like to see some figures on how many E10’s end up seeing time for their Pro team.. I’d imagine almost all of them.
Nice …. alright Lin back where it started. His stats were descent for a backup. At 32 he can still be a solid rotation player. He’s a great pick n roll guard. That’s what made Linsanity. Wish him the best .
I am just wondering isn’t an Exhibit 10 deal waaay too good for this guy?
Seems a perfectly good waste of a roster spot to me, if you ask me, right?
I doubt you know their roster. Or who they have signed. Best way to find talent for a capped out team. Is thru Gleague. And Warriors need backup PG badly.
id say he’s pretty typical for an E10 contract.
Probably undervalued as an E10
Sure some teams have younger guys with more potential at the bottom of their roster, but they’re probably not as good as JL.
Hes def amongst the best “3rd stringers” at PG is what im getting to.
Lin and Korver are better than Toscano-Anderson and Mulder, GSW looks a lot better with those two vets than the rookies. Plus PJ Tucker, D Rose or JaVale is coming too via the IPTE. GSW might have its longest bench in the Kerr era this year.
If Wiseman really is David Robinson+++ then the whole league is about to be punching the air all season again, lmao
“Lin and Korver are better than Toscano-Anderson and Mulder, GSW looks a lot better with those two vets than the rookies.”
Wow I hadn’t heard the Warriors signed Korver also? Wow that’s great news he’s a tremendous shooter.. I look forward to his role on the team. Thanks for the report
Jeremy Lin would be a great addition for GSW. He can be a good role player off the bench, has a great locker room presence and just suits the culture there.
I’d cut Damion Lee and Mike Mulder
mulder is pretty good at shooting but still its either going down to mulder and anderson or poole who may get cut. they got 16 players on guaranteed contracts. just gotta take away two or convert one of the them to a two way and let lin in. im pretty sure poole and anderson r gonna be da odd men out
I find it strange that Lin’s basically been unable to find a spot as a role player with a team for the past few years. Like he was a capable starting point guard and has never averaged less than 10PPG — so you’d think if he can be that effective as a starter… that he’d at least be a decent role player for a team in need of a backup PG/veteran presence of the bench. Idk it just seems weird to me that his career has basically been ‘all or nothing’ where he goes from starting for a team, averaging 12/14 PPG while shooting relatively effectively from the floor and 3-pt range… and then is waived/cut and can’t even find a spot as a 10/15 MPG role player. Like there seems like there has to be some middle ground where he can be helpful to a team without having to start.
Here’s the thing. In the NBA you want your back up to be special in a single area which provides a spark when they come in Off the Bench. Lin is the perfect starter because he does everything pretty well. Shoots a little defends a little distributes a little can get to the hole Etc. He is not a guy with one area where he is exceptional and then you hope you can develop the other areas to be pretty good. See what I’m saying? He’s just pretty good at everything. I think that’s the rule with your bench on many occasions. I might not be right but I think that’s how it goes.
Or.., your third guard plays Heavy minutes and he needs to be like Jeremy Lin. Do it all and won’t hurt you. Kind of a three-guard lineup thing where the starters play about 28 to 30 and that third guard Off the Bench Place 25 to 30 minutes a game.
But basically I think it’s because teams want a spark Off the Bench more so than teams want a steady hand. Your starter at point guard should be the Steady Hand and the guy coming in off the bench is a microwave… Heats things up in a hurry. Just my take.
dis is overall a smart choice cuz da warriors kind of lack shooting and vet presence. with thompson out for da season and a bunch of wings like oubre, wiggins, and lee who arent thompson. they only got kent bazemore whos a shooter but thats it.
