Knicks center Mitchell Robinson dismissed concerns about a tweet he sent out and then deleted Tuesday, according to Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic (Twitter link). The message read, “One day they’ll let me play,” which led to speculation that Robinson is unhappy about his role on the team. However, he insisted today that it had nothing to do with basketball.
“It was really kind of a personal thing,” Robinson said. “At the same time I don’t really want talk about that. It’s something that’s going on in my life.”
Coach Tom Thibodeau seemed unconcerned about the message when reporters asked him about it, writes Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News. He said he hasn’t talked to Robinson about the tweet and isn’t interested in addressing it.
“I don’t know what you guys are talking about (with the tweet). I guess you have to ask him,” Thibodeau said. “But I talk to Mitch every day. He gets here early, stays late. Work in practice. I have a number of meetings with him. So I’m talking to him a lot about what he has to do to help our team win.”
There’s more from New York:
- Austin Rivers‘ comments this week about players being fatigued are a familiar issue on Thibodeau-coached teams, notes Marc Berman of The New York Post. Thibodeau is known for having a short rotation, but he rejected the idea that it’s a problem. “The schedule is the schedule,’’ he said. “It’s balanced. Sometimes it’s in your favor. … You could probably find an excuse for every game. That’s what you have to guard against. You have to have the mental toughness to get through anything you’re facing.’’
- Although the Knicks have been mostly bad for the past 20 years, they continue to be the NBA’s most valuable franchise, according to Brendan Coffey of Sportico. The team has an estimated worth of $5.42 billion in Sportico’s latest valuations, well ahead of the Warriors and Lakers, who have been much more successful on the court. “You’ve got market, brand and legacy,” explained Sean Clemens, sport banking principal at Park Lane, a San Francisco bank. “The Knicks, along with the Lakers, are always viewed as the iconic brand no matter what happens on a sports-competitive level year over year, decade over decade.”
- Knicks center Nerlens Noel has signed with agent Chris Gaston in advance of free agency this offseason, Bondy tweets. Noel was previously represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports.
Team value
Warriors 5.21 billion
Lakers 5.14 billion
Clippers 2.63 billion
Warriors = two Clippers
Thibs is the best. Translation:
“Mitchell is going to stay in the post because 7 footers with his post, rebounding, and shot blocking ability have no reason to be standing out on the 3 point line. Especially with no prior history of shooting them in games”.
Sorry Mitch…
But he still continues to block shots from the perimeter.
Havimg plays ran on offense for Mitch to shoot 3’s, & rotating on perimeter D? I’m not following?
Hopefully the knicks get tired quick tonight like Austin rivers said, so the Cavs can get an easy win.
Not quite what happened, but the logic was sound. I’m so much happier now with Silas than I ever was with D’Antoni who was just as guilty as Thibs of overworking his starters during the regular season using 8-man rotations, which should only be used during the playoffs.
Knicks have lost three in a row. They are rested and need a win. Mitch story is old. He’s posted all last yr and thru this in between seasons. On social media about his workouts. He’s shown his handle and his shooting. Showing he’s progressing and got more game to come. We all know players push their brand and agents do it too. Thibs don’t care about that. He’s gonna help this team get better. Using his strengths not what he hopes to be. Truth is by this point. He should have some post moves. He’s a career .53% FT shooter. This yr even worse. So learn to freaking shoot FTs before you talk about your offensive gm. His strength is team D and rebounding. He can grow from there. Listen to Thibs and learn. At 22 you should have a lot yet to learn and grow. A floor general and ast PG. Helps our team get much better. It also helps Mitch score more consistently. Thibs has fixed our D this yr. Now he has to work his magic on team offense. A real PG goes a long way there. It’s either thru a trade or the draft.
I’m getting old.How much longer do i have to wait for a point guard leader? It’s always next year. It’s not rocket science, to build a good team you build around a great backcourt not 4 power forwards. How many more years till they figure it out. Ufda! Signed lifelong knick fan.
4 coaches in 4 yrs man. Before that the Triangle don’t need a real PG. So fans pay the price. You’re right it’s been too long. Nttilikina n Smith both don’t seem to want it bad enough. Thibs will fix it. David Duke in draft will fix it too.
Noel is defensive big who could help a contender. Definitely can give good mins as backup. He could be on the move also.
Quickley looks good thou
Thibs is the guard whisperer, just give him a little time.
It is little befuddling considering the absolute glutton of solid PG’s in the League. Charlotte sucks and they have THREE PG’s that NYK could use big time.
And look how well that’s working out for them over the years.
So I guess the Knicks are the GameStop of the NBA?
Let me reiterate. I said point guard Leader as in leader of the team. Like 95% of all good teams have had.
Quickly is solid and has a future. The guy plays D too. But he isn’t a facilitator yet. It’s not his first instinct. He could get there and I hope he does. But a guy like Rozier helps us now while he grows. Looking back Halliburton would have been the one. I like Toppin so I guess we gotta make Randle turn into one. Next draft is deep but deep in wings.
