The Pelicans are targeting Atlantic Division contenders – the Nets, Sixers, and Celtics – as trade destinations for swingman J.J. Redick, per The Athletic writers Shams Charania, William Guillory, Jay King, Derek Bodner, Alex Schiffer and Danny Leroux.
As we relayed last week, teams have been reaching out to New Orleans about guards Redick and Lonzo Ball.
The Athletic piece suggests that Redick, on an expiring $13.1MM contract, would like to play for one of these northeast-based clubs, as his wife and children live in Brooklyn. Should Redick not be dealt by the March 25 deadline, the veteran could also become a buyout candidate for a contending team.
A catch-and-shoot wing like Redick could be a fit for all three clubs, and all three have expressed interest, per The Athletic.
Redick was the starting shooting guard for the Sixers from 2017-19, while Boston could use another reliable shooter. Brooklyn, meanwhile, depleted many of its potential trade pieces in the blockbuster deal that netted the team All-Star guard James Harden. Schiffer notes that the presence of newly-extended swingman Joe Harris – a similar player to Redick – and the Nets’ relative lack of assets may make a deal a longer shot for Brooklyn.
The 36-year-old Redick has been a healthy scratch for the last two Pelicans contests. At 7-11, New Orleans is currently out of the playoff picture in the West.
Redick is averaging 7.9 PPG in 19.9 MPG, his lowest such totals since his age-24 season in 2008/09. A career 41.4% three-point shooter and 89.2% free throw shooter, Redick is connecting on just 29.8% of his long range attempts this season, though he is making a stellar 100% on his 1.6 free throw tries.
Redick for Dinwiddie
Redick for Kelly O
Celtics don’t have a bad contract to match the salary
I don’t think Nets will trade Dinwiddie. He has been progressing well in his rehab and he most likely will take his $13M player option next year. The Nets could use his DPE toward Redick’s contract. They still would have to give a contract back to NO to make up the difference.
Redick for Dinwiddie… You are nuts.
He is requesting a trade to the northeast not northwest so the GSW are out. I also don’t see his contract as being a negative based on how well he’s played leading up to this season. His game has never been about athleticism. He just in constant motion and uses rubs and screens extremely well to get open.
Celtics could trade Langfeld and a future 2nd for a top 55 protected 2nd and then absorb Redick’s salary using the Hayward TPE.
Celtics don’t need to match salaries due to TPE. They can trade two seconds for him and call it a day.
Celtics have a trade exception from Hayward that is greater than Reddick’s salary and don’t have to send something back
TPE
so…what assets will the Nets be able to send for Redick?
Boston could add Reddick and not have to give back a player using its TPE. Reddick would be a solid addition for their bench.
Coming back to Philly would make sense on a personal level. He was a good player here and fitted well with Simmons and Embiid. Not to mention he’s played many years under Doc from their time with the Clippers. However he have shooters on our bench like Maxey, Milton, Curry and Green so we don’t really need him.
JJ Redick is 36 years old and 7 months
Born in June 24, 1984
I don’t look at his career stats but current stats
First team to offer a 1st rnd pick unprotected or top 3 protected gets him.
It’s buyers that have targets, not sellers. Redick will likely play for the Nets if he’s bought out. The Nets have little remaining trade material and aren’t going to use what little they might be able to piece together to get Redick.
If he is bought out I think he would return to Philly. He enjoyed being a Sixer and he would get to play for Doc again.
His family lives in Brooklyn, so that would be the pull there.
Perhaps, if he can get minutes there. Living in Brooklyn within walking distance of Barclay’s, with 2 young kids, I would still put $$ on the Nets.
That’s one of the dumber things I’ve ever heard.
DXC… Bingo!
BKN
I don’t think it’s up to him. I’m pretty sure it’s up to the Sixers. JJ ain’t taking any minutes away Curry
Nope… no sale here. Shooting has fallen off a cliff. Lot of 0-fers or 1-fers. Defense never was good, but the shooting always outweighed the defense. Hard pass on JJ. 13M was way too rich for my blood and Elton’s.
I’d be shocked if the Sixers did that. The Nets would be wise to deal the injured Dinwiddie for anything, I dont believe they asked for the DPE?
I wouldn’t trade for anyone shooting less that 38% from 3 as a Sixer fan. Ellington could be a target, even tho hes shooting outside his mind, his career is still 41%. As much as I hate George Hill, I’d entertain that before JJ. Still too much salary tho. Ellington for a 2nd or two 2nds and a player? May get it done.
Why is my comment waiting moderation?
My trade idea
Redick and 2024 Lakers first round pick for Celtics TPE and a future Seccod
Pelicans save money
Redick will be a UFA after this season soca salary dump makes zero sense for New Orleans. Teams like the C’s Nets and 76ers may be willing to give their first this year considering they’ll prob all be top 5-7 teams in the league or maybe 2 seconds.
Why in the world would they include a 1st rounder? You have had some dumb trade ideas in the past, but this might be your worst ever.
Only if Celtics threw in Langford also….
And he still doesn’t understand that teams can’t trade a TPE.
Redick is a UFA in the offseason so why would the Pelicans have interest in a salary dump type move? Redick should be able to fetch 2 seconds or something along those lines
Upon further review, the only matches for the Nets for a trade while using an exception against Redick’s contract would be Dinwiddie or Jordan. It’s hard to see those happening, especially since the Nets depleted their draft capital. The Nets will most likely wait to see who gets bought out.
Even if Harris was a match it seems real unlikely they’d trade him for Reddick at this point
Boston with that huge TPE make a lot of sense, in Philly we already have loads of shooter don’t really need him
Joe Harris is a better all-around player than Redick, I can’t imagine why the Nets would complete such a trade.
Redick has no value at all. At best he’s a 5-7 minute deep sub off the bench.
He’s a healthy scratch on a non-playoff team. Let’s get a grip, people.
Of course, if he can’t get minutes on a 7-11 team there’s no way a contender has any use for him. There’s no market out there for a washed-up 36-year old who’s shooting less than 30% from 3-point range and makes $13M/year.
I can’t imagine his defense improved.
Pelicans are playing Chinese checkers and everyone is playing chess.
That’s why they fleeced Pelinka on the AD trade even though no one else was bidding for Davis.
Asking or thinking of too much from Reddick won’t end well tho.
Hopefully New Orleans doesn’t overplay there hand.
Celtic can use a player like him. Their bench is thin.
Milwaukee needs a closer, I’d love to see him with the Bucks. they have no one that can hit a clutch game winner
JJ is shooting his worst clip of his career. Contract is 13M. No thanks. Better shooters available for cheaper. Wayne Ellington looks like a prime candidate.
David Griffin drafted Joe Harris as Cavs GM, should put that into the article.
Guys like Reddick/Korver etc dont hold as much value as they did say 5-8 yrs ago (taking their aging outta it, just prototypes )
Everyone can shoot Now so making a 3 doesnt get you mins; hell it doesnt even get you on the squad anymore
Troy career 3% 39.5
19-35.7
18- 41.1
17- 40.3
16- 37.4
15- 47.6 !!
14- 40%
10 years ago everybody would be thinking Troy Daniels needs a job as a specialist….Today he was shown the door at 28 an mostly shut down by the age of 26
The Athletic says it so it must be WHAT ? Nonsense
who in their right mind trades Harris for Redick . Especially when you are shooters by for multiple championships. Slow news day. With multiple media and sports sites. We got more scenarios and fake news. Than dealing in facts and true possibilities. Like they’ve run out of ideas. I’m available if you need talent. Redick wants to go to the north east. I doubt anyone trades for him (13 mill). They will all wait till he gets bought out. Bucks and Sixers could use him. Celtics need a rim protector, been saying it since season started. Ball is interesting. Seems someone will have to gamble on him. But why would you give up value to do that. I think you have to wait him out and watch him play.
