Rockets center Christian Wood will be re-evaluated on a weekly basis for his right ankle sprain, the team announced on Friday in a press release.
He underwent an MRI on Friday after suffering the injury during the third quarter of Thursday’s game at Memphis. While the release didn’t indicate the severity of the sprain, it’s likely that Wood is facing a prolonged absence, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle tweets.
It’s a major blow to one of the league’s hottest teams. The Rockets have won seven of their last eight games to get past the .500 mark at 11-10. Houston has a busy February schedule with 13 games remaining this month and it’s quite possible Wood will miss most or all of those games.
He sat out three games late last moth with a similar injury but otherwise, Wood has built upon his breakout season with Detroit.
Acquired by Houston in a sign-and-trade, Wood has emerged as an All-Star candidate, averaging 22.0 PPG, 10.2 RPG and 1.5 BPG through 17 games.
Without him, the team will rely more heavily on DeMarcus Cousins, Rodions Kurucs and trade candidates P.J. Tucker and Danuel House.
Must be pretty bad if an MRI can’t tell them anything because it is swollen. You could see it last night almost immediately. His lower leg nearly doubled in size.
A bad sprain with best of care. Takes 2-3 wks to heal right. Then days to start playing. Just take 3-4 wks off if you need it. Why would it matter, just get healthyz
Finally the bullet in the Rockets season they needed to take anyway, in a rebuilding year it’s silly to not tank. They’re in 10th place, a game over .500. There’s no point to do this.
Bring on the Tucker, Gordon, Boogie and Oladipo trades!
Waiting for Wallidipo’s take on this ….
Boogie will get more Minutes now.
1 game over.500 and the 10th seed, or 1 game out of the 4th seed. Not sure they have to blow it up just yet. if they can make a move to acquire someone who can help hold the fort down until Wood gets back then they are a legit playoff team with a nice core to build around.
Let’s “circle back” around the deadline and see how they are doing.
Ok so say they make the 8th seed, do you honestly think this team can beat the Lakers 4 times in a series? Of course not, and that goes the same for all the contenders. This roster just doesn’t have what it takes to beat the best teams consistently. There’s no point for the Rockets to try and sneak into the playoffs, they don’t have it. The draft next year is loaded deep into the 2nd round, they’d be in a great spot to build around Wood with draft picks.
If the Warriors make the 8th seed, could they beat LA even once?
They already beat them once this year! And Steph routinely beats LeBron. Have fun being a “Rockets fan” haha
The Rockets are in no worse shape than Golden State right now. Of course they will be relying a lot more on Boogie, who played very well as a starter during the initial injury to Wood. And obviously Oladipo and Wall will need to do their part as well. Gordon has been great lately and hopefully that will continue. But with Tucker and Tate’s solid defense plus a deep bench with House, Brown, Nwaba, McLemore, and even Mason Jones the Rockets can survive (possibly just a couple of weeks or so) without Wood.
The Rockets dont have Curry or Green, they have no one truly elite. Golden State just whipped the Mavs playing small ball while the rest of the league is worshipping big men again for some reason. We are not the same. We are going deep into the postseason, you are not.
Of course the Warriors are not the same as the Rockets.
Houston is 11 or 12 players deep right now, and Draymond is about as far from being an elite player as PJ Tucker is. The only significant contribution they’re getting from Green right now is his assists.
Otherwise he would be a total liability on offense shooting under 35% and under 20% from three. Beating the Mavs by 31 points is hardly proof that the Warriors will even make the playoffs, let alone go deep into the postseason. You’re way more of a homer than I am.
You got till TD to feel it out. Bro hate to break it to you. But you are not deep till you are at least a top 4 team consistently. Relax there are nice 4s in this draft. Nothing wrong with that. Plus Oladipo and Tucker could really bring back value that makes you better. It’s more important to build team right. Even if it’s not a full rebuild. A retool …. you come back stronger next yr. Big picture bro, big picture.
@Marty… look you always have been wrong about everything, right?
I mean you annoy & insult everyone who calls you out with your awful takes…
but I must say you really should even by mistake get one right at some time, right?
You do know that HOU is a team that even if they want, they can’t tank, they don’t own any of their first rounds, so for them to tank is just not good, the only way to rebuild is by winning, that is actually the sad situation that HOU is in now, so no tanking for them, strikefour!
I never miss. You stay mad. You stay telling lies and straight up untruths. Not one of your words there made a lick of sense buddy, come back to me when you finally join reality. Strike five on you!
Rockets still have 2022 first round pick and 2023 swap
My best trade idea
Rockets get Edwards and Culver
Wolves get Wood and 2022 First and 2023 swap
As a result Rockets trade away and clean up all 11 consecutive own first round picks from 2016 to 2026
Build around Edwards and Culver
They literally just traded for Wood to build around.
Golden State just whipped the second worst team in the West.
Their 1st rd pick is owed.
I’ve seen a lot of people comment how delusional Walladipo is, I guess Marty McRae is the west coast version of him.
I get that too lol
The way RJ was talking about him during last nights game you’d think they amputated his foot.
Christian Wood needs to be an all star because he is playing at an ELITE let me repeat myself he’s playing at on ELITE Level which is why he should also win MIP
Last year
Beal was not an all star
There is always a huge Unless
Rockets won’t make playoffs unless all 9 man rotation plays average 65 games each
Too early to blow things up and trade the team or even think about it. Spurs for years did well without too many “elite or good” players. Tim Duncan was a great player in that system. Even on Duncan’s decline, Spurs were great without elite players. Rockets are almost resembles that team currently. Solid defense and controlling the boards is key for the Rockets. Again, it’s to early to tell yet where the Rockets are after a poor start to the season. Last I checked in the last 10 games, they are 7-3 and that puts the up there with the top 4. If Rockets came out a bit better and in the top 8, people wouldn’t be talking about blowing up the team. Give it time
Spurs had great coach and unified franchise with a vision. Not the same thing. But they do have rely on being more a team like Spurs did. In the end it’s always about a Team. It’s fans who wants stars and big twos, big threes. It’s a Team sport.
You sort of echoed what I said. I never once said they were the Spurs of modern day. They are ALMOST like the Spurs. A deeper bench and a Duncan/Allen type of combo for the Rockets, would be beneficial to them. The new head coach is unproven and we all know that. Similar to the Spurs former head coach at that time. So, again, they are almost similar to Spurs minus a few needs. It’s not a bad thing either
