Wherever Tom Thibodeau goes, Taj Gibson and Derrick Rose eventually show up, writes Marc Berman of The New York Post. Thibodeau coached both of them when they were young players in Chicago, then brought them in to be veteran leaders in Minnesota. Now they’re together again after the Knicks signed Gibson last month and completed a trade for Rose today.
“I’ve known (Rose) my whole career — we came in together,’’ Gibson said. “He’s a competitor. He’s a great guy. … He’s one of those guys who’ve been around the system — same as myself. We know what Thibs basically wants. As long as you give 100 percent effort every day, 110% on defense. At same time just coming in and being vocal and understanding what you need to do.’’
Gibson has only gotten into four games since signing with New York, but his role could expand if the team sees more need to rest Nerlens Noel, who has been dealing with knee issues. Noel sat out a second straight game Sunday, allowing Gibson to play 16 minutes.
“I thought he played really well and when Nerlens is back, he’ll be ready in any role we ask him to play,’’ Thibodeau said. “That’s always been with him. Even early on in his career, start him, bring him off the bench. Whatever the team needed he provided. He’s a great teammate, great leader.’’
There’s more on the Knicks:
- The trade shows how much influence Thibodeau has with team president Leon Rose, Berman adds in a separate story. In addition to his fondness for Derrick Rose, who he still believes can play at an MVP level on some nights, Thibodeau doesn’t place much value on second-round picks, preferring to use them as trade fodder. Berman also examines how the trade will affect the rest of the roster and views Austin Rivers as most likely to lose playing time.
- The Knicks may be most effective using Rose as a shooting guard, rather than breaking up their point guard combination of Elfrid Payton and Immanuel Quickley, suggests John Hollinger of The Athletic. He notes that Detroit frequently played Rose at the two-guard spot, where he would be taking minutes away from Rivers and Reggie Bullock.
- The deal offers some insight into how Leon Rose plans to run the organization, according to Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, who points out that the Knicks’ president was patient in free agency and aggressive on the trade market. Rose and Thibodeau appear to be focused on securing a playoff spot this season, rather than developing young talent.
Amen!!!
Trade Payton to recoup a 2nd.
So the team divides again?
Once again the Knick hater is at it again. Knicks have deserved bad press for yrs. But I don’t see how you can kill a rebuild. It just means the team is trying to get better thru the draft and youth. Yet Berman and most of media. Have been killing it since Phil started it. Cause he wouldn’t talk to them and they viewed him as arrogant. Finally Dole stepped in and they messed up the rebuild the last three yrs. 4 coaches in 4 yrs. Dolan paid off three of them in full. OK so now 22 gms in with New management, new coach. We are worried about mins and shooting for playoffs.
Is this the most asinine version of the Knicks or what ?
We are 22 gms in. We are one of youngest teams in league. We have six contracts on 1 yr deals. It looks like they really like Quickly at PG a 20 yr old. Payton was run out of town last yr. Then was mocked for resigning. Now they are worried about his playing time. Do you see what a Circus it can be here (22 gms in).
The guard situation is crowded. It was crowded before Rose. Payton, Nttilikina, Burkes, Rivers are all basically on 1 yr contracts. Out of all of them. Rose is best to mentor Quickly. Plus he helps on closing out gms. Rose is a backup these days. Not a savior. Burkes and Rivers are both vets who could help contenders. Randle and Toppin situation frankly is more important to me. And the one most deserved to watch. I don’t see why you keep Randle when his value is sky high now. The TD is a month away. Knicks are rebuilding this yr, finding a core. That’s the most important thing this yr. Making the playoffs while rebuilding just means you are doing a good job. It don’t mean you blow it all up and chase a Championship. Our PG play needs upgrade that’s all. He knows Thibs and can Mentor Quickly. It’s still a rebuild. Big picture folks Big Picture.
FA we have potentially 55 mill in cap space. We have trade options, we have two #1 picks and two 2nd rd picks. Big Picture folks. We’ve waited a long time to rebuild thru draft. We are not going to blow it up for 8th seed. No matter what the media thinks.
Reminder: The Knicks have two #1 picks but have only one 2nd round pick in 2021 after the Rose trade.
But it’s the Detroit 2nd round pick isn’t it? If so, most likely 3 picks in the first 35 draft spots.
I mean outside of Quigley and Obi and Robinson what young talent do the Knicks have? Is Kevin Knox young talent? French Frank young talent? This team hasn’t hit on a lotto pick since kristaps
Who is Quigley? Sound like a high school principal lol
He looks pretty good, similar inside/out game to Beal. Decent defender, ball handler. Could be a decent pg.
What about last years lottery pick, R J Barrett. He’s averaging 17 points a game so far. I’ll grant you he needs to work on his defense, but he’s definitely a talented kid with an upside.
RJ Barrett? Who they just picked 3rd? Lol
Yeah forgot about that. OK 3 picks. There’s rumors that teams are looking at Payton. He’s playing descent and can help a contender. I can see Knicks starting to move guards now. Quickly could start now. It’s what media n fans are pushing for. Rose can backup, Frank the D guy.
Sounds about right.
Rivers is definitely expendable now. With that said, had the Knicks gone ahead and signed Christian Wood who they supposedly had interest in, and drafted Halliburton they’d be really competitive. They have a tough decision with Randle and the upcoming TD, Toppin would be a significant drop-off at this stage,
Definitely big decision now is Randle, I agree. I believe in Toppin being the future. But you can wait till end of season to make decision. I just see Toppin as better system 4 with Mitch n RJ. You gotta give Randle his props, making this difficult. I also wonder what they would take back. This draft is heavy on wings 4s n 3s.
Celtics would take Randle. Ainge wants “scoring with size”, remember?
What do they have to give?
