The Knicks may use some small-ball lineups while center Mitchell Robinson is sidelined with a fractured hand, writes Steve Popper of Newsday. The team is planning a group effort to replace Robinson, who anchors the defense with 1.5 blocks, 1.2 steals, and 8.4 rebounds per game. Nerlens Noel will likely become the starter, with Taj Gibson seeing increased playing time, but coach Tom Thibodeau is willing to use Julius Randle in the middle beside Kevin Knox or Obi Toppin.
“It’s always part of what we can do,” Thibodeau said. “I think in looking at what Mitch provided and what Nerlens provided, I thought that was a strength, and then maybe what Taj provides, as well. But I think Obi is playing at a high level right now, and that second group has a lot of speed and they can get up and run the floor.”
There’s more on the Knicks:
- Noel was the team’s starting center during the preseason while Robinson was learning Thibodeau’s system, and the coach is confident he can slide back into that role, Popper adds in a separate story. “Any time a player like Mitch goes down, you don’t replace him individually,” Thibodeau said. “You have to do it collectively. And that’s where we feel good about our team. I think Taj, going in, his experience will help. Nerlens has done a terrific job for us. We want to make sure we maintain the defensive component of our team and I think those two guys can do that.”
- The Knicks have plenty of assets on hand and the new front office is willing to package several of them in return for a star player, sources tell Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News. One possible target is Wizards guard Bradley Beal if he changes his mind about wanting to stay in Washington. An unidentified general manager tells Bondy it would likely take three first-round picks, two pick swaps, a young player and an expiring contract to land Beal. Rockets guard Victor Oladipo and Bulls guard Zach LaVine have also been mentioned as possibilities if the Knicks don’t want to pay that price.
- John Wall keeps close tabs on fellow Kentucky players and is impressed by the progress of Knicks rookie Immanuel Quickley, according to Marc Berman of The New York Post. “He’s someone I respect,’’ Wall said. “I’m very happy for him to get the opportunity. I’m glad he’s showing people he’s more than just a shooter. That’s a lot of what people thought. The way he runs the point-guard position has been good. It’s going to be good to go against him.”
Thibs plan worked well tonight
So did Nash’s lol damn somebody stop the fight
Nets offense is coming along, watch out. Warriors team D was horrible tonight. Don’t get why not sign a big.
Knicks bench was great tonight. Toppin played ok but needs more mins. I was hoping we could move Noel or use him in package deal. Now we probably keep him. Like to see Toppin n Knox get playing time now.
Just want everyone to know. Remember when the Rocket homer predicted Knicks wouldn’t win 22 gms. I think he was trying to say. Knicks couldn’t beat Rockets by 22 ……….. Oh Well
Knicks — 121 Rockets — 99 … DOOoooHh
8 for 43 from 3… lolol Loving how this team plays for each other. The bench is very good.
Give it up man. Almost 60% of the people here voted that the Knicks wouldn’t win more than 22 games. So they’re better than they were last season, big deal. Winning in the east is nothing to brag about.
Knicks are two levels ahead of Rockets
Knicks are the 7th seed
Rockets are the 13th seed
Nothing is surprised.
Rookie Quickley is better John, the supermax
Nothing to brag about winning in East? U are so wrong with your a Knicks comment.,what an improvement on court with swarming defense and hustle. Knicks are a joy to watch. A win is a win unlike last years debacle.
Waladipo you make a good point about 60% of the fans on here & what truths & facts permeate discussion.
Thibs coaches to win. He should not be a development guy, or 100% in charge of roster creation/building.
But his teams no matter how depleted of talent or bodies will tickle the playoffs every season at worst. The guy is good for 35-40 wins with a G-league roster.
He is a Doc prodigy & as much as I do not like Doc, a few of those clippers teams had no business making the playoffs.
Gotta be the shoes…
60% of people here are bandwagon. You claim to be one of the 40%. So I suggest you learn to take it like you give it. Just educate yourself when you want to spout criticism. There’s a line between critical n hating. I try my best to walk that line.
I made no such claim, you are dead wrong, rude & crossing way over that line you claim to balance on like a trapeze artist.
I can take any criticism & give it right back. Your delivery here sucks & isn’t designed to share in information, or discussion.
Then calling me out for spouting off wrecklessly by doing the same thing & being completely off the mark at the same time???
You are freakin’ reachin’!
Peace!
Sensitive is a proper choice must say. I’m answering the Rocket Homer. Seems obvious to me. I assure you he knows who I’m talking to. I’ll give you a pass for your ignorance to facts. Your comprehension needs work. But while we are here. You don’t know squat about Thibs. All he’s ever done is develop teams. Bulls, TWolves both young teams that he added parts. He’s gotten a rap for dogging teams (mins). Knicks are nights day in 25 gms with same roster. Thats like the ultimate development. So try again if you like.
Next time address who it is, and I’ll give you a free pass. All that is fine & well with your 1 sided facts for your truth, but teams have development staff ignoramous, which of course is what I was referencing. As usual off the mark. He is not a development coach because he is the Head Coach & plays the most ready player on the bench. He has coaches & staff that do that, it changes from team to team, some follow, and I certainly never claimed Thibs is poor at hiring development coaches. Great attempt & classy way to say I should have made it clear who I was replying to.
Sorry for the confusion
As bulls fans,I always love thibs and happy he made knick to be a decent team.
That sounds about right for Beal
3 Firsts -2 swaps- expiring(s) -then just finding a young fella with some promise and stock arrow pointing upwards and you got a deal
Its cool to see people stay in 1 org but in this situation it just feels best for everyone involved to take the trade package and take it before this deadline to optimize its value-
James Bond move would be to come back in 2.5 years when a free agent and they have young/cheap assets galore and NO RW with a clean cap
Yeah, I bet Westbrook wishes he would have stayed in OKC now. Is he this era’s version of Carmelo Anthony? Great player who can’t figure out how to be a great teammate.
Powell,Baynes, Stanley Johnson,McCaw, 2022 pick,2023 & 2024 pick and whatever pick swap for Beal & Mo Wagner…
Horrible trade must add more
A fringe allstar in Powell, a serviceable big in Baynes decent wings in Johnson and McCaw, plus 3 picks and you are saying more has to be added??? You are trying hard to toot your own horn. I personally won’t give you that validation…
Wizards would want one of either Lowry or Van Fleet back
Would seem unfair to send Lowry to DC, seeing as he is used to being in the playoffs…but if it gets the deal done then I guess so…
Glad to hear Thibs is considering small ball 5 lineups with Randle/Toppin
Would be a waste to use Mitch’s time out to throw more minute at Taj or Noel at the expense of Toppin. Let the kid play
That’s what I’m hoping. Toppin had 11 pts in 14;40 last night. He needs to play. I’m hoping it’s cause they want to show and move Randle. Could get us a big name somehow.
The Knicks would be crazy to pay a large price for Beal. Understand Beal is an awesome player but if the Knicks traded three first round picks, some pick swaps and a good young player then all the Knicks would be is Beal and a bunch of bad players. The Knicks would just be what the Wizards are now. The Knicks should just continue with their plan. The Knicks have some good young players Randle, Barrett, Robinson, Toppin etc, some extra draft choices and lots of cap space. So the Knicks should just not ‘shoot themselves in the foot’ by making stupid signings and trades like when Isiah Thomas was their president.
Spot on. The Knicks would just trade for the privilege of becoming the Wizards of NY. Keep with the draft strategy.
Think the Knicks did well to clear the roster with their trade with the Mavericks. It appears that the Knicks will have about $70 million of open cap space to possibly sign Randle and Robinson to contract extensions and to buy new FAs from the FA open market. The Knicks should be wise and patient. Don’t junk up the roster with over paid ‘over the hill’ FAs. Better to not sign anyone at all than to sign the wrong players. Keep the gun powder dry.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Bradley Beal. Just can’t give away the franchise to acquire Beal.
The Knicks wouldn’t (and wouldn’t have to) give up anything close to that number of picks and swaps (unless protected) in a trade for Beal. At least right now. The unidentified GM who spoke with Bondy is either an idiot or thinks (knows) Bondy is – or both.
There is no equivalency between picks or pick swaps from the Clips, Bucks or the Nets (at the time of their trades), and the same from the Knicks. What perennial lottery team has ever given up it’s draft position in 5 consecutive drafts? 3 consecutive drafts? None. Beal (who’s presence on a team has never precluded a top 10 pick) is going to be the first?
Knicks would offer other team 3 Firsts
Examples would be 2 Mavs Firsts and a fake First
Fake First and fake swaps have become popular
Clippers swap First with Knicks this summer
That is fake
Bondy’s GM source must assume Beal will go to a successful team with low pick position. Not a bad assumption!…
Given the current Wall complaints, the Wiz FO, for their reputation, may prefer to deal from a Beal shortlist when the time comes.
I must say I thought the Wizrds would rise, but I thought the same of the Cavs, Hornets & Nix, so something had to give!
Noel does everything Robinson does better
I wouldn’t say ‘better’ but they’re comparable. But consider Robinson has less experience and is still improving. And prior to this injury, he’s been more durable than Noel.
I really hope Noel produces in this opportunity and the Knicks are able to trade him. I think he could play some meaningful minutes for a contender.
I agree that would be nice (Noel). Mitch is 21, under Thibs he’s going to be all team defense. He hasn’t fouled out once. That was one his worst issues.
Can’t say it enough. It’s a rebuild and Thibs is here to establish a core. Building our assets (talent) to make a trade is part of that. Beal is to expensive for us. Oladipo and if LaVine is available. Probably a better fit. Thibs will fix LaVine s D. But Oladipo has to be healthy. I don’t think we know that yet. Knicks have 3 of top 32 picks in draft. Dallas, NY, Detroit and a total of 4 picks. Those three picks are very good players in this draft. And it is heavy in 3s n 4s. You add those three to this young team. And we are young and deep next yr. We have cap room for FA. We don’t have to make a trade to make a significant upgrade next yr. But I’m sure Randle, Nttilikina, Knox, expiring contracts will be used to upgrade team in some way. TD is 5wks away.
Big picture everyone Big picture. Knicks haven’t rebuilt since Ewing days.
