Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau has only nice things to say about the Timberwolves as he prepares to face them Sunday night for the first time since being fired two years ago, writes Marc Berman of The New York Post. Thibodeau helped Minnesota break a 14-season playoff drought in 2018, but was let go the following year. The Wolves are 43-93 since then, including a league-worst 7-23 this season.
“There’s a lot of good people there,’’ Thibodeau said. “I enjoyed my time there. It was a good experience. I was proud of what we were able to accomplish, but it was time to move on. Unfortunately there are a lot of former teams for me.’’
Thibodeau, who also had a front office role, spent just two and a half seasons with Minnesota, being let go midway through the 2018/19 season in favor of Ryan Saunders. He believed the team was heading in the right direction and could have accomplished more if he had stayed.
“There were things obviously we wanted to do better,” Thibodeau said. “That second year, we were very good. The third year I thought we had a really good chance as well even after the trade for Jimmy (Butler). That team was playing well.’’
There’s more from New York:
- A report this week suggests that Knicks executive William “World Wide Wes” Wesley is working through backchannels to try to convince Wizards guard Bradley Beal to seek a trade to New York, relays Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News. ESPN radio host Michael Kay said the tip comes from a “very good source” who told him that Wesley is “nudging” some of Beal’s representatives toward the arrangement.
- Mitchell Robinson had no idea his hand was fractured when he suffered the injury in a February 12 game, according to Anthony Rieber of The New York Daily News. Robinson thought it was temporary numbness that he could shake off, but the diagnosis turned out to be far more serious. He had surgery this week and will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break. “So far, I feel great,” he said. “Basically, what I’ve been doing now is doing the bike, a little running here and there. I’ve been watching the team practice and trying to stay updated just in case they change something or something’s added. Other than just focusing in on that, just staying in shape.”
- The Knicks played 30 games this season before having one canceled due to COVID-19 and that was because of issues involving the Spurs, notes Peter Botte of The New York Post. Frank Ntilikina is the only player to miss time because of contact tracing, and no one on the roster has tested positive for the virus.
Thibs brought them to playoffs. That alone was monumental. Having both coach n GM duties was a mistake. He brought Jimmy there and he tore team a new one. As we all know NOW they deserved. They still haven’t manned up yet IMO. I love KAT but the star has whip the team when needed. Seems he doesn’t want to be that guy. TWolves should be much better than they are showing. Now with Russell out, things could get worse.
Ya gotta love Thibs. He’s a bad front office exec, and he doesn’t seem like he can put together a long-term plan, but he’s funny, he’s humble, and he’s a class act. I wish he was in a better situation – the NY media will turn on him at some point, and that is going to suck.
Dolan n NY media are the two detriments we have to deal with. Thibs was here under JVG so he knows. I just don’t want to rush things cause we are in playoffs now. I’m all about rebuild , shut the media off lol.
Time to grab cousins we spoke about him before now he’s a free agent go get him.
As much as I would love Beal on Knicks. It’s too expensive for us. Imo it’s best to follow thru on this rebuild. Just one more draft and we will be fine, young and talented. A good Idea is to bring in a cheaper haul and keep at least our two #1s. Like Reddish or Fournier, Rozier, LaVine, Oladipo even (healthy). Better off using expiring contracts and young vets. Rivers, Noel, Burkes, Payton future picks. It’s a mistake to shoot for the stars now. When we can find two of them in the draft and sign one with our cap space. I’ve read we need to use our 18 mill cap space now. So even that can help. Don’t want to trade our picks this yr.
Rozier for Rivers, Noel, Burkes, Payton future picks I will do in a heartbeat! Throw in Knox as well.
World Wide Wes talking to Beal’s representatives in order to manipulate him into asking for a trade from the Wizards?
Beal seems like a guy who can figure things out on his own. Maybe I’m wrong, its not uncommon in sports for reps to have unusual influence over athletes sometimes. Doubt Leon Rose & Thibs are thrilled about this rumor. Probably checking to make sure no NYK employees have World Wide Wes affiliations as we speak to avoid Tampering queries.
WWW is employed by the NYK.
Hey Fanboy… just like DXC says… He works for the Knicks. and if u think that Rose and Thibs don’t know about this, your nuts.
It could be just rumors cause of Wes connections. But the hype is true. Come to NYC to biggest market when they start winning. NY media at its best lol. How good will we be if we have to give up Everyone. Rebuild
@Fanboy… What tampering you talkin’ about here?
Agents must talk to reps from teams to see what’s out there… & reps must talk to agents to see what players might be available & willing to come to their team… what you seem to call tampering is what is called doin’ your job, right?
The wording relayed that there is ongoing manipulation to talk Beal into requesting his way out of WAS in the offseason.
That is textbook tampering & the NBA made a fuss about cracking down on it recently. Doubt they will. The primary point of the comment.
I don’t give a rat’s a$$ if the NYK are busted for it or not. Or any other NBA team. They all deserve what they get as far as my emotions are concerned. If it were any NBA team & Beal I’d write the same comment.
I think all the NBA statutes are arbitrary at best. Hypocrasy is another thing all together.
It’s bad character that brings me great joy to point out.
Can the Knicks get in trouble for this leak? I hope not. Backchannels method of talking to a player to bring them interest to come to a team I assume would be difficult to prove unless you get a court order to find out telephone records and email records.
I would really consider Rozier. A trade for him would cost a lot less and the guy averages over 20ppg, close to 50% fg and over 40% from three which fills some of the holes we are lacking in offense.
Beal is the superior scorer obviously but and requires only 23 fga to get his 30+ ppg while Rozier requires 15fga to get his twenty plus.
Rozier averages 3.6 made three pointers at 7.8 attempts per game which is great!
2.8 for 7.5 attempts per game for Beal.
Beal averages 7.3 ft made out of 8.2 per game while Rozier averages 2.3 for 2.9. So Beal excels in fta which is another areas of weakness the Knicks need filled.
I would trade Mitchell, Elfrid, Knox and two second round picks for Beal. Include Burks if necessary. Anybody but RJ, Quickley, Obi and Randle. I doubt anybody would want Rose so we keep him as well.
The same for Rozier. Any one of these players for either one:
Knox
Burks (although I’d rather keep him)
Rivers
Payton
Mitchell or Noel
As a matter of fact I would trade also for those players to get Andre Drummond. If we could get Drummond and Beal/Rozier in a blockbuster trade I would predict Knicks in East finals:
Rose
Quickley
RJ
Randle
Mitchell or Noel
I meant:
Rose
Beal/Rozier
RJ
Randle
Drummond
Quickley off the bench with either Noel and Mitchell.
