A Sunday report indicated that Pelicans sharpshooter J.J. Redick is interested in returning to a team in the Atlantic Division, where he could be closer to his family in Brooklyn. That report identified the Sixers, Nets, and Celtics as teams that would intrigue Redick, and noted that all three of those clubs have expressed some interest in the veteran wing.
In addition to those three teams, Redick would have interest in joining the Knicks, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. It’s unclear if New York reciprocates the 36-year-old’s interest. If so, it would be a pretty clean fit from a salary cap perspective, since the Knicks are the only team in the NBA with enough cap room to accommodate Redick $13MM cap hit without sending out any salary. The Celtics are among the teams that could take on Redick’s contract outright via a trade exception.
That leaves Toronto as the only Atlantic team not on Redick’s reported wish list, which makes sense — the Raptors are playing in Tampa this season due to the COVID-19 restrictions applying to the U.S./Canada border, so they’ve been temporarily displaced from the northeast.
Here’s more on Redick:
- One Eastern Conference general manager who spoke to Sean Deveney of Forbes is skeptical that the Pelicans will get much of a return for Redick, since he looks like a potential buyout candidate. “No one wants to give up a young player or a pick for a guy you could sign a week after the deadline passes anyway,” the GM said. For what it’s worth, I think the Pelicans will have a hard time finding a first-round pick for Redick unless they’re willing to take on some bad multiyear money, but landing a second-rounder or two seems more realistic, especially if suitors view his struggles this season as a short-term slump.
- David Aldridge, Joe Vardon, and John Hollinger of The Athletic consider whether Redick would fit best with the Nets, Sixers, or Celtics, ultimately concluding that Boston makes the most sense of the three. Hollinger suggests that a pair of second-rounders and some “dead-ish” money would be a fair return for the Pelicans if they make a deal with the C’s.
- As noted by The Athletic and others, Tuesday, February 2 is the last day this season that a player can be traded and then have his salary aggregated in a second trade by deadline day (March 25). If a player is traded on Wednesday, that re-aggregation restriction wouldn’t lift until March 26. It remains to be seen whether that deadline will prompt any action today or tomorrow on the Redick front or elsewhere.
The problem with Reddick to the Celtics is they really don’t have any “dead $” to send back. So they’d have to use their trade exception and as good as Reddick has been in the past… I’m not really sure using the TPE on him is the best course of action. I suppose if they can’t swing a trade for a bigger player he would be a good fit… its just that using the TPE on him kind of feels like a waste. If they had bad a bad contract or 2 to send back instead I’d say that would be a great fit… and 2 2nd round picks would definitely be worth it. But I just don’t see who they could trade that would make sense.
Who are the great options the Celtics should be aiming for?
…with that fat TPE of theirs.
Fournier makes a lot of sense.
They should consider Andre Drummond.
Aiming for? Beal. Getting? Not Beal.
Neither Drummond nor Beal fit into the TPE Boston has. There is no way to use it to acquire a player with a salary more than 100k above the value of the TPE.
JJ says WSB – Hold The Line
I don’t see a trade that makes sense. JJ is playing terribly and 13M is a lot to match. Wayne Ellington all day <3M.
Yeah he may want to return to Philly, but they really don’t need him. Curry is much better in that role than JJ was.
They’d have to trade Danny or the entire bench to match too.
I’d trade Ellington for the 2021 2nd round pick they have from the Knicks.
Option
Many fans want to trade Redick for a future First round pick, it’s not smart to buy him out. Pelicans lose 10 million on buyout
My thought
Average value of first round pick is $35 million
Redick real value $3 million for current season only
Redick salary $13 million
Negative trade value $10 million
2020 Reddick makes sense for the knicks. They need an outside shooter like him that will get buckets. 2021 Reddick? Not convinced the price is worth the return. He is not putting them over any proverbial edge.
We are rebuilding. No need for old bench players. Not even old starters. A solid vet at PG or SF to steady the ship. While we develop a SF or PG maybe. But we have plenty money in FA and plenty picks in draft. 20 gms in on a rebuild. Don’t get confused by the record.
Pelicans wants to dump his salary
You do buyout only if you are not able to dump his salary
Reddick is going to have to be traded this season or waived to go somewhere.
Tough to trade him @ $13 million because he’s a minimum guy next season, and nobody wants to give up a lot to land him now.
If Pelicans want to win and Rockets want to dump salary
Trade idea
Rockets get Redick and filler
Pelicans get Eric Gordon
Rockets save money
I guarantee you that is not going to happen. The Rockets are playing great right now so why would they just arbitrarily throw away one of their top four scorers for someone 4 years older who’s playing terrible this season?
Rockets are a Rehab center. They better be real careful how they handle their players. They are gambling and really don’t need to. Winning is nice but it’s not their priority. Building a core is. Even if they make playoffs they are one and done. This bandwagon mentality is only going to end badly.
Realistically the Rockets are a fringe playoff team and while anything can happen, its doubtful they make much noise (a series win would probably be the top goal at this point). While moving Gordon would hurt this year’s team, its silly to hold onto big contracts and to chase being a fringe playoff team. If he didn’t have another two years on his deal I could see holding onto him but given his injury history and the direction the Rockets should be going, it just doesn’t make sense to hold on to him too long.
Right now Wood looks like the only long term building block (who knows if they want to keep Wall long term and the rest of the roster looks like useful rotation players as opposed to building blocks/budding stars right now). Freeing up cap space and using that to take on bad contracts with draft picks attached and/or make offers for guys with potential (like Christian Wood) should be the goal of the Rockets.
Honestly if I was the GM of the Rockets (and obviously I’m not) and the Pelicans offered that to me (Reddick plus filler and maybe a pick or two for Gordon), I’d have a real hard time turning that down.
No one is trading for that contract. No contender can match it. He will have to get bought out. Bucks and Sixers should come calling then. Knicks have no use for him now. We are a rebuilding team. The playoffs are NOT a priority. Building a core is.
36 year old jj who is shooting 29 from 3. No thanks. Celtics better not give anyone up for jj
Celtics have enough shooters, come up with a plan to snag randle or Aaron Gordon!! That’s what’s gonna move the needle!!
