Knicks center Mitchell Robinson will undergo surgery on his fractured right hand and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets.
Robinson suffered a fracture of the fourth metacarpal against Washington on Friday night. He was injured when his hand banged Julius Randle‘s elbow as he attempted to block Rui Hachimura‘s shot late in the second quarter, according to Peter Botte of the New York Post.
“He’s obviously bummed that he can’t be there with us on a night to night basis, but like I said, he’s in great spirits,” Randle said. “He’s a great teammate. And he’s gonna be there with us every step of the way still.”
He’s averaging 8.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG and 1.5 BPG in 28.8 MPG. The 2018 second-round pick is one of the lowest-paid starters in the league at $1.66MM. The team holds a $1.82MM option on his contract for next season.
With Robinson sidelined, Nerlens Noel and Taj Gibson will get the bulk of the minutes at the center spot. New York has a full roster and would have to make room to add another big man.
Time to give some more minutes to toppin
Bummer for Mitch. We’ll see if Thibs goes Toppin or Noel. My bet is on Noel. Should provide extra bench minutes for Knox/Toppin though.
Toppin at the 5… That’s not gonna work all that well.
He’ll be playing PF, but it should be Randle playing the a lot at the 5.
Exactly what I was thinking Walladipo
I’m not sure positional distinctions matter much, but Randle likely would not be playing a traditional 5. His ball handling and passing are too good.
Shades of Jokic. He’s ready
Tonight the answer is Noel
Mitch has not fouled out of a gm this yr, article says. That’s a big difference there. That’s the Thibs influence. Knicks are like night n day just from coaching. Amazing how that can work, truly amazing. I thought we could move Noel to a contender. Personally I’m not concerned about playoffs. Rebuilding comes first so I’m praying Knicks don’t do something crazy. Stick to rebuilding and if playoffs come too, that’s fine. TD is 5 wks away. I’m still hoping we upgrade. Happy Mitch will be back. Now Obi1 can get mins and show up. Obi1 has to take advantage of mins. Make it easier for us to move Randle. Knox too should get mins. Still think Knicks can find a trade that moves the process forward.
I myself was hoping to see Noel on the market-
Ton of need for a guy like him and not enough supply around the league and that contracts super easy to match/expiring
Could just be a good showcase time but idk I mean if he just nets a pick in the 50’s sometimes its better to just keep him and maybe get an underdog playoff series win..??…ya never know……. Perhaps try and put him and Payton together to actually get something worth it if ya gotta deal…. If Im not liking the package as NYK Id be coo just rolling as is…they got picks, they got youth, late 2nds dont tickle me as much as quality exp/time/winning on the floor
Robinson is easily the most underrated/underpaid player in the entire league.
Not even on the knicks. IQ would be that. But instead of playing him they retread DRose again…
Quickly has barely been in the league, you cant be “the best/most/worst” in such a short time.
You are wrong, everyone loves IQ and he’s getting respected as he should, Robinson is legitimately good and makes no money for the production he gives, have a great day.
False. It’s a guard league. Mitch is rim protector at his apex maybe will get ya 10/10/ 2blks in a season. IQ could and prolly will be a 20/5 guy really soon. Blocks are nice, but let’s be real.
But you have a great day as well.
Thibs is best thing to happen to Mitch. Mitch is actually making less than Quickly, didn’t know that. Mitch will get his contract next yr. He was a 2nd rd pick (36) 2018. Quickly was a 1st rd pick (25). Quickly will get paid his fourth yr like Mitch.
Noel will almost certainly start, and should – I think he’ll show well as a rim protector (he’s developed over the years into an excellent defender, on the bust track that’s below the radar).
But Knicks also need to use this as an opportunity to give Toppin a short path to 25-30 min a game for run of games. We need to know what we have in Toppin, whether we keep Randle or not. Randle is basically a C (in the eyes of most of the league) and playing with Toppin might not be a bad way for him to show (the league, including the Knicks) some position flexibility.
That’s gonna hurt New York. That means toppin is gonna get more minutes and that the knicks might consider calling up Justin Patton from the Westchester knicks. Besides he and Thibidou already new each other form the wolves
A few years ago I was hoping a combination of Mitch and KP plus other assets would help get AD. Oh well that didn’t happen.
Toppin got almost 16 mins tonight against Rockets. He did all right. Wish he would of played more. Bench played well and Noel had a good gm. Knicks D has been consistent all yr. 99 points is excellent when your offense is good. Rose has helped the offense. It’s why they got him, so that’s good. Like to see Topping get 20 mins plus while Mitch is down. It was a good team win.
Rose in NYK feels like Pumpkin Pie on Thanksgiving this go around – Im Loving it….when trades occur I just root for the players to benefit and this one feels right on every level…Even Det not getting greedy from the onslaught and prolonging the reunion gets props
Would love to seee the Knicks maybe come outta the play in round and get a crack at say a Boston or Brooklyn ….they wouldnt even have to win the series to come out victorious in the end as long as they fought hard all the way thru and didnt play scared
