As the Warriors strive to make a return to the playoffs, they owe it to themselves to give young reserve guard Jordan Poole more minutes, Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area opines. Poole can provide some ball-handling for the second unit, a skill that is not a strength for his fellow backup guard Brad Wanamaker. With a 19-18 record, the Warriors are currently the No. 10 seed in the crowded Western Conference, which would qualify them for the play-in portion of the 2021 playoffs.
After Jordan Poole outperformed expectations playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League Orlando “bubble,” Monte Poole believes the time has come for him to get extended run spotting Stephen Curry in the second and fourth quarters during the All-Star point guard’s allocated rest breaks. Poole averaged 22.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG, and 3.5 APG across 11 games (all starts) with Santa Cruz.
There’s more out of California:
- Lakers reserve forward Kostas Antetokounmpo, who signed his second two-way contract with Los Angeles during the offseason, has entered the league’s COVID-19 protocols, Dave McMenamin of ESPN tweets. Center Marc Gasol remains away from the team in coronavirus protocols as well.
- Warriors forward Alen Smailagić has been recalled from Golden State’s G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, the team announced in a press release. Smailagić averaged 7.5 PPG and 4.4 RPG in 10 games for Santa Cruz.
- While Kings head coach Luke Walton‘s job remains safe entering the second half of the 2020/21 season, Sacramento’s roster may undergo some changes with the March 25 deadline fast approaching, according to Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee.
In the entire NBA
Warriors GM is the worst at building up the bench for past 5 consecutive years
I don’t think Kings continue to upgrade the roster
Only 7 Warriors have G league experiences, not enough
Maybe Warriors need to send 3 more players to G League to gain experience
paschall, Chriss and Wanamaker are qualified
1st. The G league season has ended. So, you can’t send players there. 2nd. Paschall play has lead him to regular minutes in the Warriors rotation. 3rd. Chriss has a broken leg. He is out for the season. 4th. Wanamaker won’t be resigned.
They gave away most of their bench when they got KD back in 2016. It worked for a while, but we saw how bad things got last year. Now they’re mortgaging the future of the franchise while trying to keep their dynasty going. If things keep up like this they will have to blow up the team in 2022.
They were also expecting KD to stay with them for a long time. Now that he’s gone, they have no bench and no Durant.
3 first round picks and 2 seconds in the next 2 drafts. Trade deadline coming. “mortgaging the future”? please clarify
Bob meyers made a big blunder that is haunting them for the last 2 years. Signing D’Lo to a huge contract that was flipped for Wiggins. The big over pay to Wiggins hurts them. They could have 3 quality bench players for what Wiggins provides. Wiggins is a OK player but not worth how much he is being paid.
Arc, its Myers. And you’re leaving out a few details. Myers was losing Durant. Sign and trade for DLo. Flipped for Wiggins. AND a first round from Twolves. Wiggins is better than Russell…not close.
To sum up, Durant (was gone anyway) for nothing? Or Durant for Wiggins and high first round pick. A few details.
From Feb 6, 2020, article by Drew Schiller: “So as things currently stand, the Warriors turned KD (who wasn’t staying no matter what), Iguodala, a 2024 1st-rounder and a 2025 2nd-rounder into:
-Andrew Wiggins
-Minnesota’s 2021 1st-rounder (top-three protected)
-Minnesota’s 2021 2nd-rounder
-$17.2 million trade exception (from the Iguodala deal)
The first round pick they gave up is 2024. 3 years. And the Iguodala trade exception was used to get Oubre. Posters like you Arc conveniently leave out details like losing a future HOFer and defensive star like Thompson to injury but I guess we should somehow blame Myers for that as well.
They didn’t sign DLo to sign Dlo. They signed him because he was THE ONLY PLAYER they could possibly sign. They weren’t allowed to just sign any free agent, they were up against the cap, so the KD sign and trade was to acquire DLo’s max contract SLOT. In order to TRADE FOR THAT SLOT. Which they did and acquired ASSETS. Wiggins can now be paired WITH the MIN pick(deemed as the best asset in basketball) as well as Wiseman and that’s the best trade offer anyone can offer right now. Oubre will be resigned, because if they want to add anyone over the league minimum, they can bring him back due to possessing his bird rights, THEN TRADE FOR ANYONE making that cap figure. Don’t be so short sighted♂️
Say, Wiggins, Wiseman, MIN pick, and Oubre for 23yo Brandon Ingram and 23yo Lonzo Ball, maybe Hayes as well. add in Paschall and a pick for Josh Hart. Regardless, they have the OPTION to offer it, and that’s better than just letting KD walk. They shouldn’t use this package on ANYONE under 6’7 or over 24yo, so it’d be guys like Simmons, Tatum, Luka, Porter, Ingram, etc.
NO might do that bc it’d set up a lineup of Kira Lewis, Jalen Green/Suggs, Wiggins, Zion and Wiseman all within 2yrs of age outside Wiggins, who will be a FA before they need to pay anyone of the young guys.
All I’m saying, is there are OPTIONS. Even a Wiggins+MIN pick for Jerami Grant wouldn’t be that bad, though Lonzo for Oubre is perfect. Zo and Iggy are nearly identical stat wise, Lonzo has less hops and is a better outside shooter but the defense and playmaking is there, and the DEN Oggy is identical to Zo this season. It’s a fit and you wouldn’t lose wiseman, instead gain a passer for the second unit and allow Poole to play off ball. Justinian Jessup is 15/4/2 on .490/.480/.880 in Australia. Not a bad piece AT ALL.
Oh and also if the MIN pick falls in the top 3, it becomes a 2022 UNPROTECTED PICK, and MIN WILL SUCK NEXT YEAR TOO. The dubs aren’t in a bad way and only kids would think they are/their FO has been anything other than solid.
2021… 5 years ago was 2016… the 73-9 season… I think you’ve misunderstood how time works bud. They had Harrison Barnes 5 years ago bud. Along with Iggy, Barbosa, Livingston, Ezeli, Speights, etc.
Then they got KD and effectively had 4 Max slots under the cap. Makes it tough to build a bench. The fact they have Damion Lee, Eric Paschall, and Kent Bazemore is one thing, yet Oubre would be the bench piece if uh KLAY THOMPSON WAS STARTING. Wiseman’s a part of that bench, as is Chriss and even Jordan Poole after Wanamaker has been a 30 game dud. Have some patience. They’ve done A LOT MORE than ANY other team in the last 5 years. THIS is the cost of 5 straight finals buddy♂️, especially when they’re smart enough to leverage KD’s departure into another max deal, which was done with Iggy’s exemption as well for Oubre+Oubre’s bird rights. They’ll resign him just for the sake of having that contract on the books able to trade.
Maybe drafting LaMelo>Wiseman and trading for Drummond>Oubre would’ve been better but again, 30 games into the rook’s season is a bit too short to label him a bust, and it’s not like LaMelo was a can’t miss prospect, he struggled to shoot over 30% in a lesser European league.
Overall, it’s not like they’re out of chess moves. They can still do, say, a Wiseman+Wiggins+MIN Pick+Oubre+pick/Paschall for Ingram, Lonzo, Hayes, and maybe Hart, and use their own top 20 protected pick to draft Isaiah Todd a bit high, therefore having talent that’s still 27 when Steph and Klay are 37/35, aging into high quality catch and shoot guys, like rich man’s Terry/Redick & Korver, while Todd would be 23 and Hayes 25. The Pels would have a foundational lineup of Kira Lewis/Jalen SuggsORGreen/Wiggins/Zion/Wiseman, all within 2 years of each other, and none requiring contracts until after Wiggins deal expires.
All I’m saying is there IS a path for them, and it’s silly to think they can’t do anything or are sitting ducks, just that it’d stupid to trade their bigger asset for anyone older than 24yo. Oladipo, Beal, etc would be stupid. They should only entertain Tatums, Ingrams, Luka, etc and use the other assets to ensure a respectable core around him as Steph and Klay age into role players.
