While John Collins has been mentioned in trade rumors for the last few months, the Hawks are unlikely to trade him at this year’s deadline, Adrian Wojnarowski said during ESPN’s televised Woj & Lowe Trade Deadline Special this afternoon.
“They are going to keep John Collins,” Wojnarowski said. “… Expect him to finish the year with the Hawks.”
Meanwhile, Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News – who says (via Twitter) that the Mavericks are one of the few teams “loosely” engaged in talks for Collins – cites a source who thought the big man was a lock to be dealt two weeks ago but now estimates the likelihood of a trade to be 40%.
Assuming the Hawks aren’t blown away by a last-minute offer, the opportunity to stay in Atlanta for at least the rest of the season should please Collins, who spoke on Tuesday about his desire to remain with the team.
The next step would be working out a long-term contract in the offseason when Collins reaches restricted free agency. If he and the Hawks can’t find common ground, an offer sheet or a sign-and-trade deal would be another option.
Wojnarowski also said on this afternoon’s ESPN special that Atlanta had some interest in Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball, but that possibility may have “gone by the wayside.” Woj wouldn’t be surprised if the Hawks ultimately stand pat at the deadline, or end up just making small tweaks around the edges of their roster.
Hawks want sexy offer
Collins want handsome contract
Celtics offers won’t be sexy and handsome
Why are your comments so cringeworthy?
Can someone explain to me why the Hawks wanted to trade him in the first place? I obviously don’t watch them, but from what I see his stats and advanced stats are pretty solid. Does he just not fit into their system, or did they just feel like they could get a lot for him, or what?
Might feel it better to get something for him than lose him when he a feee agent. He might want more than what they wanna offer him
Hawks won’t be losing him as a free agent. He’s a restricted free agent. We can match any offer he agrees too
Hawks went on a free agent spree last offseason and can’t match market offers on him, he will leave them for nothing unless they win the title this year, then it’s all worth it
Hawks have the flexibility to keep JC. I believe Snell is expiring at a big number. Pretty sure Dunn’s second year is an option that even if exercised would be movable. Rondo will be on an expiring deal as well.
Hawks never said they wanted to trade him. Other teams just wanted him badly bc of how good he is & his age. Only way Hawks ever would traded him was for a huge haul
Playing devils advocate:
1)Collins wants major $, maybe they are not sure he’s worth that.
2)Hawks have been burned in the past by getting nothing for departing players.
3)2 seasons, at the beginning, Collins missed major time. Both times when the hawks were excited to see how well Collins would mesh with other players. Both times leading to major losses and difficulty knowing the teams direction going forward.
4)What has Collins done when featured against top players in Allstar or Playoffs (yes I know its not all his fault)
5)What has Collins done when he’s been need to carry the team for stretches? IE; the #1 focus of a defense.
Let’s say Collins currently is in top 70-80% percentile of power forwards. But then begins getting paid like a 90-95%.
Unless we got a ridiculous offer we were gonna keep him the whole time. He’s a young, energetic, productive forward that’s literally a perfect fit for our team. If someone offers him the max in free agency then we sign him back for the max, either way he’s gonna be in Atl for yrs to come
Its not just the max that has to match. Any poison pill provision has to match also. Trade kickers, odd salary structure non beneficial to current team.
In this instance, low salary, then huge salary when Trae is due for a huge raise.
Hawks are in a tough situation John wants a Max contract and next year Trae is a free agent and he’s going to want a Max contract too and Clint is getting paid 17mil for the next 3 years and they just paid Gallo and Brogan and they both are making 16mil the hawks are going to be in the negative cap space for a good minute
Trae’s under contract next year, when he’s due for a max extension he’ll get it. Gallo will be in the last year of his deal and could be moved. I’d expect a guy like Huerter moved before he’s up for an extension to create more space. They definitely have to be creative but they don’t really have any terrible contracts.
Even if you had to slip Brogan off w 2 2nds for an expiring (whoes hopefully functionable) I think you do that if your ATL….. whats OKC up too?
