The Heat are among the teams with interest in Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv, who previously reported that Detroit is eyeing Dinwiddie as well.
Miami’s interest in Dinwiddie is curious — the Heat presumably want to make a push to get back to the NBA Finals, and the 27-year-old is considered likely to miss the rest of the season due to a partially torn ACL. It also may be tricky for Miami to make a deal with another Eastern Conference contender, lest they risk strengthening a potential playoff opponent.
On top of that, the Heat have the ability to open up some cap space this offseason, so Dinwiddie’s Bird rights wouldn’t be as valuable to them as they would be to teams without any projected room. So while it’s not impossible to imagine Brooklyn and Miami making a deal involving the veteran guard, it seems somewhat unlikely.
Here’s more on the Heat:
- In the wake of Miami’s acquisition of Trevor Ariza, Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald breaks down what the deal means for the team, while Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald gets some feedback from an NBA scout on the 35-year-old’s fit. Ariza has typically played the small forward position, but Jackson’s source expects him to be a de facto power forward in Miami. “In today’s day and age, Ariza can be a four,” the scout said. “There’s so little distinction between threes and fours when you look at who’s on the floor. I don’t think that’s a problem at all.”
- Within the same story, Jackson suggests that it may no longer make sense for the Heat to pursue some veteran forwards who were previously believed to be targets, such as Rudy Gay and Nemanja Bjelica. And while LaMarcus Aldridge remains a possibility in a buyout scenario, Jackson is unsure the Spurs big man would get a ton of playing time in Miami if Kelly Olynyk continues to play well and Ariza establishes himself as a rotation player.
- Before playing his old team for the first time on Wednesday, Grizzlies forward Justise Winslow expressed gratitude to the Heat, with whom he spent the first four-and-a-half years of his NBA career. “More than anything, I want to see those faces, just to tell them, ‘Thank you,'” Winslow said, per Michael Wallace of Grizzlies.com. “Because I wouldn’t be here without their guidance and without their support. It’s no hard feelings, just a lot of gratitude from me.”
You basically need him to give a gentleman’s agreement that hell opt-in or you’re confident you’ll resign him and you’re going to be over the cap and require his bird rights to do so. Other than that, theres no point for this move. They would have to give up a player that benefits the Nets this year, but doesn’t benefit the Heat this year.
Maybe this is where Ariza ends up? If that’s the case, do it bc it only cost you a distant future 2nd.
There is 100 types of interests
Teams have buyout interest in Drummond
Mavs are interested in trading for all stars with no avail asset
76ers are interested in Lowry and don’t want to add salary
Knicks are interested in Oladipo with no offer
Fake interest
Maybe the idea is to potentially move 1 or both of their young guards in the offseason? I’m sure they’d need at least an asset to send back, but the best thing I can see that might fit is Dinwiddie and Tyler Johnson for Avery Bradley, Moe Harkless, and maybe Chris Silva?, but that doesnt really make that much sense for multiple reasons. Maybe they’d be acquiring Dinwiddie to flip elsewhere
I could really do without that Dins rumor.
JustiseBetter. Really wish he was on this team right now. Also interesting seeing him talk to Michael Wallace about what they owe to the Heat organization, as both have ties
Some of those Heat articles are the most obvious things I’ve ever seen from our “sportswriters ” down here, and that is saying a lot lol
I’ve posted in several places. I don’t want to see the Nets trade Dinwiddie. While they have him, they could still use his DPE. Also, with his rehab progressing, he could be ready for the playoffs. Finally, I think he may opt in for another shot at a ring. I’m not worried about Joe Tsai’s bank account, but I doubt they’d use his Bird rights on a long term contract now considering how far into the luxury tax they are.
Heat are back in playoff mix. Currently 4th seed. They are the defending East champ. Why in the world would they break up their team. For a guy that can’t help them this yr. And they could sign as FA next yr. This is a Sillyman take at its best. Sorry not even he would suggest this. There must be No Eye in Ian …….
Dinwiddie to the Knicks …. wake up Wes, Thibs, Dolan
The idea that teams with cap space (projected) are interested in trading for Dinwiddie this year keeps popping up, but still makes no sense. His contract has no value to these teams (frankly, even for a team without cap space, his contract still carries little value as he’s a UFA). Unless, of course, he plans to return this year (unlikely), or he plans to opt in (he’s more or less indicated the opposite, and, in any event, any team can cause him to opt out with the right offer to his agent before the opt out date). More likely is that the Nets are putting this out there to create a market for Dinwiddie’s contract (bird rights). Maybe the Nets concluded that Dinwiddie is opting out, and thus see no benefit to paying the massive tax on his salary this year, but aren’t willing to use their few remaining trade assets to unload him.
Opting out and leaving, after getting a title out of the era, he hopes. I guess I do too, despite Irving.
Well it’s good to hear an explanation, I will take it.
I don’t see the Nets resigning him. Before injury he had already indicated he was opting out. Cause the market was going to pay him minimum 15-18 mill a yr. Considering they are going for title this yr. He assures the Nets can load up for a title run. It’s the smart move to make. You went and got Harden. Now you shore up the D and make sure there are no weaknesses. Knicks can provide that imo. Pistons can’t offer better. Heat I don’t believe would even consider him. Much rather have Dinwiddie than Lonzo. And they will cost about the same it seems. Where I consider Drummond a small move. Dinwiddie I consider a major move.
Dinwiddie PG – Rose, Quickly as backups
