The Knicks‘ contract with Mitchell Robinson allows the team to retain the young center in 2021/22 for just $1.8MM, assuming his option is exercised. But in that scenario, he’d become an unrestricted free agent in ’22. New York could assert more control over Robinson’s free agency by turning down the team option and issuing a qualifying offer to make him restricted this summer.
Now that a broken foot is likely to sideline Robinson for the rest of the 2020/21 season, Marc Berman of The New York Post cites league sources who believe the Knicks’ decision has become simpler — the club doesn’t have enough information yet on Robinson to send him to free agency so soon, those sources say, arguing that picking up his option for ’21/22 is the right move.
Exercising Robinson’s team option would still allow the Knicks to negotiate a possible extension during his contract year. In that scenario, they could go as high as about $54MM over four years with a straight extension offer, or even higher with a renegotiation-and-extension. However, ESPN’s Bobby Marks tells Berman that he’d be surprised if New York is that aggressive in extension talks.
“Coming off a serious injury, I’m not paying him what Christian Wood got in Houston,” Marks said, referring to Wood’s three-year, $41MM contract with the Rockets. Marks suggests something in the three-year, $30MM range would be more realistic.
One source tells Berman that he believes the Mavericks will have interest in Robinson if and when he reaches free agency.
Here’s more on the Knicks:
- With Robinson out, the Knicks will probably add a center for “insurance” purposes, per head coach Tom Thibodeau, Berman writes in the same story. Berman confirms a previous report that John Henson and Norvel Pelle are among the options being considered by the club and says New York has also had internal talks about Jordan Bell, Thon Maker, DeMarcus Cousins, and Hassan Whiteside.
- Cousins appears likely to join the Clippers for at least 10 days, while Whiteside – a buyout candidate – remains a King for now. Berman notes that the Knicks’ brass likes the team’s chemistry and would want a player who fits “seamlessly” into the locker room, so Cousins and Whiteside may be lower on the wish list for that reason anyway.
- While the Knicks seem likely to add a center, Nerlens Noel believes he and Taj Gibson are capable of handling the five in Robinson’s absence, writes Steve Popper of Newsday. “I feel like we have it covered, but that’s not my department,” Noel said. “That’s (the front office’s choice). … If Coach, management wants to add another piece, that’s all up to them. I definitely feel we’re comfortable with what we have. “We have depth in Kevin (Knox) and Obi (Toppin) staying available at the four, five spots and that helps as well, so I like the versatility we have.”
Just my opinion
Mitch
Real value 2 year $30 million player option
Market value 4 years $60 million team option 4th year
But Knicks fans said Mitch is the next Patrick Ewing?
Of course they won’t give him as much as Christian Wood got last year.
Robinson is a decent player, but he’s not even half as good as Wood.
robinson, wood, jaxon hayes, daniel gafford, nic claxton, robert williams, and jarret allen are all the same type of player and should earn the same eventually. playing time and opportunity are all different for each one, but all the same regardless. i’d even throw whiteside into that group.
Jarrett Allen is a cut above
And Bob Williams has been showing potential of late that would also put him a cut above too
Wood has offensive skills none of those other guys you mentioned have.
Not true, he’s better than Wood defensively right now. It’s only Thibs first yr. Robinson has upside of premier rebounder, rim protector who runs the floor. His offense is coming along but Knicks don’t want that from him now. Think Rudy type player as peak. Wood might be better now, cause offense is valued. This is Mitch first yr he’s been consistent. Too bad he got hurt.
Did you really just suggest his peak is Rudy Gobert? He hasn’t even shown a fraction of Goberts talent not to mention he is clearly injury prone.
Hell no
who did?
I don’t recall any fans saying this
Is this a straw man? Who on earth ever said Mitchell was the next Patrick Ewing? Not even the most optimistic, homer fans thought anything near that.
Ewing was the #1 overall pick and an extremely accomplished offensive player. Mitchell was a second round pick with few expectations who, while a good player, has very few offensive skills aside from finishing and offensive rebounds.
I’m assuming you made this up.
Who would have thought Nerlens Noel was as smart as he is after he turned down that money a few years ago
Berman is an idiot. It’s also clear he doesn’t have any sources willing to tell him Rose’s actual thinking on anything. The Knicks’ priority is likely to be preserving cap space in the out years. So, it would make no sense for the Knicks to just exercise Mitch’s option and then talk extension with him. They’ll likely either exercise the option, putting things on hold until 2022 (he’ll be a UFA, but they’ll still have his BRs), or sit down with him prior to the exercise date and try to roll next year into a long term extension. They’ve seen enough to put a value on him now (whether it’s one he likes or not), so I expect a sit down. If not, that’s telling too.
Agree…Its so much easier to get yourself into cap problems than out of them.
Knicks got it good right now, young cheap talent and enviable cap room moving forward
They dont have to punch themselves out next year in free agency, taking the Rd with some nice jabs for the scorecards would be what Id want for 22 if I was a Knicks fan –
Keep the cap flowing/add more youngins with your picks (*They are even in the enviable position to move up this draft if they love a player and he’s semi falling draft night) Im excited to see where it goes as an outsider….late 90’s basketball in MSG was electric, NBA fans benefit getting that arena filled up in future Junes
I agree they got time to get it done. He’ll be offered a contract soon. For cap reasons it helps they don’t do it till next yr sometime also. No reason to even discuss money with Knicks now. Media in NY are just meddling. It’s their way to create news and narrative. We got lucky with Mitch in draft, his payday is coming. Thibs is best thing for him. To take him to next level.
Why would the Mavs want to spend on Robinson? They need to focus on getting a second star to pair with Luka.
Mavs don’t need another injury player.
KP is enough.
He’s still a boring big….
Robinson essentially missing this entire season is a big loss for both him and the Knicks. I could see the Knicks extending a modest offer, maybe in the 3/30 range, but would Robinson be interested?
He might want a full season to prove his worth. Not sure Wood’s 3/41 is a great comparison, because Wood is outplaying that contract already. Also Wood has more of a perimeter game than Robinson.
Agree on the barometer point w Wood- We cant use the highs and lows as templates
Players/agents do it all the time cherry-picking the highs and we grill them, so we cant turnaround and use the lows against them
I’ll have to see it to believe it if both Knox/Obi1 gets any significant playing time
Obi1 should be getting more playing time. That’s something that makes me take a second look with Thibs. Cause it either shows he’s prioritizing winning. Or he feels he’s not ready to contribute. Or he’s hiding him so teams don’t get a good look. Since Randle is playing like an all star. It’s not really a priority but with Knicks and Dolan you always have to watch. Knicks will handle Mitch he’s part of our young core. There is no need to rush this, his payday is coming. I’m more concerned about picking up a big. Dedmond, Maker, Pelle are the true centers out there. The one I would really want is Whiteside. The guy is sitting. He would love to play mins and help Knicks do well in playoffs. You know how much press that will give him. Berman is self centered writer who is only pushing narratives to create more stories. He wants TelaNovelas not short stories. Whiteside has been fighting the odds his whole career. He would fit right in with this group. Knicks need a center to guarantee the playoffs and to make a good showing. That would be major success for this team now. If we play Embiid in1st rd we need another center. Both Taj and Noel can hold it down but both are undersized at the 5. I’m sure they will pick up a 5. Come on Whiteside ……. let’s do this
I can guarantee you it will not be Whiteside. Somebody much more lowkey.
Just a a small reminder !!!!! 2019 – NBA draft
1 – Zion to Pelicans
2 – Morant to Grizzlies 2019-20 ROY
3 – RJ to Knicks
Plenty in media and HRs killed RJ last yr, a 19 yr old.
I think all three are future stars. So look at their teams
In 2021 ……..
Pelicans 21 – 25 (12th seed)
Grizzlies 22 – 23 (10th seed)
Knicks 24 – 24 (6th seed)
Time is the true measure of success.
Knicks lost to Minny tonight. They need to add a C
??? So what?
Maybe the Knicks will pick Whiteside up and “dominate” as the shaq says. Haters try to lick their own Peepee in the shower. Kings could have done something this year had they not joked around decisions. Hassan is a FLY swatter. Bring him in
