The Mavericks don’t plan on making any trades before next Thursday’s deadline unless they can acquire a star player, owner Mark Cuban said recently on the Mavs Step Back Podcast (video link).
“Unless it’s a game-changing star, I don’t see us doing anything at all,” he said. “So, if someone decides they’re blowing it up, OK, we’ll talk to anybody about any great player. If it’s just ‘We’ll trade this guy for that guy’ and it’s not really going to move the needle, I’d rather go with continuity.”
Cuban added that the only other circumstances in which the Mavs would look to make a trade are if another team “makes a mistake” or offers a “great player” in a salary-dump deal.
The most significant trade the Mavs made during the offseason was sending Seth Curry to the 76ers for Josh Richardson and the rights to Tyler Bey. They also dealt Justin Jackson, a 2023-second rounder and a 2026 second-rounder to the Thunder and Delon Wright to the Pistons for James Johnson. In terms of free agency, they re-signed Willie Cauley-Stein and Trey Burke.
Cuban said those moves – which allowed the team to retain 2021 cap space – had nothing to do with hoping that Giannis Antetokounmpo or other stars would chose free agency this offseason.
“The changes we made, the trades we made weren’t about setting us up for the coming summer,” Cuban said. “Not at all. We wanted defense, we wanted toughness and that’s what we went out and got.”
Dlo, anyone??
They want to get a star player to pair with Doncic, maybe they can trade Kristaps.
They should trade for evan Fournier and aaron gordon. Aaron can be the mavs best defender and evan can gives us better shooting and playmaking
You need trade proposals that are unbeatable
Likely to keep KP and Hardaway
Likely to Keep picks after 2025
I don’t think there are any “star” players actually available. Oladipo and Gordon are probably one or two steps below “star” level. I guess there could be a surprise entrant to the market, like Porzingis was, but I don’t see much in the way of star power. Kevin Love, perhaps?
Beal and Ingram?
Dallas doesn’t have the ammo for either one. Kevin Love is a big name, but he won’t have the same acquisition cost as the other two. Beal will require a near James Harden type package to get and Ingram is probably not far behind that. Love you could probably get for a couple of expiring salaries and a couple of firsts 5-7 years down the road.
Ok but your OP says “I don’t think there are any “star” players actually available.” and talks about that, I replied with two possible examples then you changed the direction of the comment to whether Dallas has the ammo for a star player. Two different conversations. I agree Dallas can’t get either of them, but they are possibly available if a team with picks in next years stacked draft along with other assets comes along and wants to swap.
Did you mean “star players available to Dallas” and left off the “to Dallas” part?
I don’t actually believe that Beal or Ingram are available. Some might, but I don’t. But even if they were, Dallas wouldn’t have the ammo to acquire them. I wasn’t contradicting my comment, I was just replying to yours.
They aren’t. Anyone who thinks either of those guys are available simply isn’t paying attention or just lives in a fantasy world…like Marty here, who thinks the Warriors could get Beal and then win a championship this season. He has been blowing that smoke for a while now.
Of course mark cuban will say that on a podcast. Dallas also wasnt looking to make a trade back in 2009 and then made a trade for caron butler and crew
Drummond is the only guy i can see being a good fit for cheap
Send Love back home to Park City
“Home”? Love’s dad is literally in the Beach Boys, he’s a Californian, that’s his home.
Love’s dad played in the NBA. His uncle is in the beach boys
Fun fact: Stan Love (Kevin’s dad) was going to try to get Brian Wilson removed from the custody his crazy “therapist”, but the family decided it should be an immediate family member, so Carl Wilson filed suit instead.
No “star player” is available. Go down the All Star list and snub list. Apparently Beal and LaVine are not available. Vucevic may be the only one available and you have a 7’whatever dude chucking 3s already. IF you sent Boban out in a Vucevic deal, that would make sense. But Vucevic isn’t a star, and his production probably wont be the same on the Mavs as it is on the Magic.
So back to the Snubs or Fringe guys… Lowry (30.5M) Oladipo (21M) and DeRozan (27.7M) are potentially available.
John Collins isn’t attainable with the Mavs pieces.
If Mavs want a game changing star trade Luka. KP won’t bring back a game changing player.
No one in the NBA can change a game like Luka, that is why he is the best… so I wouldn’t trade Luka for no one in the league, would you?
‘course not! So what is the point in sayin’ to trade him, for what???
A new coach may solve many of their problems
Carlisle is a HOF coach, whaddya sayin’?
Probably because the Mavs have very few trade assets outside of their top two players.
I’m not sure “only interested in acquiring a star is accurate”. He may be positioning for Ambassadorship to Mars or something…
I would say that the Mavericks can’t afford to trade for a star because they don’t have the draft picks to trade for a star & the young players they drafted last year have not played enough in the NBA for any team to be interested in them. One player that might be a good player to trade for is Matisse Thybulle. This would give them a younger defender & wing player that they desperately need.
